II RIVALS TO
MTU APPEAR
McCue of Clatsop and Bean of
Lane Would Like to Be
Speaker of House.
SUPPORT NOT YET STRONG
Each EpcU to Win Following of
JdcArthur. Should He Fall.
Beach Receptlre Candidate for
President of Senate.
Entrance of two rlvala of McArthur
Into tha raca for Speaker In the Ore
gon Legislature affords their State
tee at foe considerable satisfaction. The
Statement ranks have three or four
candidates for Speaker on their own
Bide, but ther are not such keen rivals
Cf each other as of the candidates In
the other camp, since the political plan
of the Statement forces at present
looks rather to the defeat of McArthur
for Speaker and the election of Ben
Belling for President, than to the elec
tion of a Statement man for Speaker.
, McArthur's rivals are J. C. McCue,
ef Clatsop, and L. E. Bean, of Lane.
Veither has yet gained much support,
and each evidently hopes to succeed
McArthur as the leading- candidate.
McCue says he has a promise of Mo
Arthur's support in the event that
McArthur shall falL Yesterday McCue
was in the city, building; political
fences.
"I am not a candidate for Speaker."
aid he. "I am the Speaker."
With this brave declaration, the
Clatsop Legislator remarked that he
considered himself as much entitled to
the high seat as anybody. McCue
could not yet. however, make any
formidable exhibition of strength. He
would have the aid of his Clatsop col
league, Lelnenweber. and of Eaton, of
Lane, and then when it should come
time to elect, of McArthur and of the
Multnomah man's supporters.
Bean's candidacy resembles that of
McCue, in that Bean hopes to succeed
McArthur In case the latter shall fall
to win. Both these men are encouraged
by the Statement Legislators. who
want McArthur eliminated In order to
open the way for Ben Selling for Pres
ident and then possibly for a State
ment Speaker.
On . the Statement side. Orton, of
Multnomah, was the first candidate for
Speaker. Then followed Campbell, of
Clackamaa Neither has rallied much
following, either in Multnomah or out
side. Another Statement candidate Is
Brady, of Multnomah, who says he
wants a Statement Speaker and has
entered the race himself, because no
body in the Statement camp has yet
appeared strong enough to win. Still
another receptive candidate is B. F.
Jones, of Polk.
When it comes to making a choice for
president, the statement element has
rather a delicate task on Its hands. Ben
rolling Is preferred in that camp, but
there are one or two others who will
have to be dealt with. One of them is
Senator Bailey, of Multnomah, a state
ment legislator, and a candidate for
president, also an aspirant for some Fed
eral office following the Legislature, pre
ferably Postmaster of Portland, and then
either United States Marshal. Collector of
Customs or Collector of Internal revenue.
Bailey Is needed in statement ranks, both
for organisation of the Senate and for
election of Chamberlain. This he knows
and this is one reason he is a candidate
for the statement support for president.
Still another legislator needed In the
statement camp In the Senate, Is Tom
Kay. of Marlon, who is virtually pledged
to Statement No. 1. who wants to be
president and then aims to be State
Treasurer, to succeed George Steel. How
the statement forces mill be able to
satisfy Bailey and win Kay's support, and
at the same time elect Selling Is a prob
lem to be worked out.
On the anti-statement side there Is no
auch rivalry for president. S. C. Beach,
of Multnomah, would like the position,
feut will not assert himself to the extent
of endangering Bowerman.
STOPS CLOSING CRUSADE
Last of 49 Indictments Secured Are
Dismissed.
District Attorney Cameron's crusade
against Sunday retail traffic, which died
lately, was laid to rest with brief but
solemn rites, yesterday. The funeral ser
vices were held in the Municipal Court,
and the 49 cases pending against alleged
offenders were given decent burial.
Mr. Cameron's chief deputy. J. J. Fitz
gerald, read the burial service by agree
ing to dismissal of the cases without
trial. The motion for dismissal was made
by John F. Logan, the attorney who was
responsible for the untimely end of the
young crusade. Judge Van Zante prompt
ly signed the burial certificate and the
thing was at an end.
'By permitting the dismissal of these 49
cases, Mr. Cameron made it clear that he
does not Intend bothering further with
the Sunday retail buxzsaMr. Although a
number of Indictments were returned by
the county grand Jury against violators
of the old closing law, none of the indict
ments will be carried further.
While the cases never came to actual
trial In the Circuit Court Mr. Cameron
seems to be satisfied with the decision on
a demurrer made by Presiding Judge
Oantenbeln. of the State Circuit Court.
When the retailers got a temporary order
restraining the police from making ar
rests or the District Attorney from con
tinuing his crusade. Mr. Cameron de
murred to the Injunction complaint. His
demurrer was overruled. He could have
carried the cases on but by dismissing the
caes yesterdsy made clear his purpose
of abandoning the crusade.
MOVE TO STIR ENTHUSIASM
Baptist Churches to Arouse Interest
in National Convention.
At the fourth annual rally of the Baptist
Churches of Portland, held last night in
the White Temple, a campaign was In
augurated to work up enthusiasm for the
Northern Baptist Convention to be held
here In June, 1909. An effort Is to be
made to Induce at least 1000 laymen to
attend the convention. This number, with
the delegation of preachers expected here
at that time, may oblige those In charge
of arrangements to provide a larger con
vention hall than the White Temple. There
was some talk last night of using the
Armory for that purpose. Short addresses
were delivered by Dr. J. Whltcomb
Brougher. Rev. F. C. W. Parker and Rev.
John Bentslen on the coming Baptist
convention, whlca means so much for the
local churches.
Dr. Broufher declared that in the near
future be Intended to bring before the
commercial bodies the necessity of build
ing an auditorium capable of seating
6000 or tuwo people, for the use of conven
tions, a structure that was coming to be
more and more needed as Portland s com
mercial Importance is being recognised.
At last night's meeting the 18 Baptist
Churches of the city were represented,
together with the various missions. The
attendance exceeded 1600. larger by 600
than any previous rally held by the de
nomination. A large part of the session
was devoted to a rollcall of the various
churches, responses from each being
given with a hymn or quotation from
scripture. Musical numbers were rendered
by Miss Gladys Morton. E. Milton Run
yan. Jr., and a quartet from the First
German Baptist Church.
At last night's meeting the following
men were chosen members of the Board
of City Mission Union: H. W. Stone. Will
S. Hale. W. L. Morgan, O. P. Jamison.
F. B. Rutherford, James F. Failing. C. B.
Toung. Alex. Scott, E. M. Runyan, W.
B. Hail. B. Sweet.
Dr. Brougher announced that the Bap
tist Union Thanksgiving services will be
held Thanksgiving morning at 10:30
o'clock in the White Temple.
