The circular waa read aloud to the men

I.ant night Detectives Coleman and

.vlilence In another case. -At the ccmer

a wagon stopped on the crosswalk and
the driver alighted to adjust a portion of

moved, so that he would not nave to
walk around It and Into the muddy
street. This man was Borna. During
thla delay of several minutes rhe police
officers arrived on the scene. They were
a few yards behind Burns.
They heard the driver of the ' wagon
call some joke to Bums on account -of
having kept him waiting at the crossing
and saw Bums turn half way around and
retaliate In sarcastic slang. The police
officers turned Into Mississippi avenue.
Detective Coleman stopped.

"Oh. come on." said Tenant, "we will
never get through with this work If you
are going to stop here and scratch your
head.'
They started again and had gone half
a block when Detective Coleman let out
a whoop, and. calling Tenant to follow,
ran after the man. who had now disap

explaining as they ran. and arrested him.
Burns put up a bold front, but finally
acknowledged his' identity: said that he

FRIEND IN PORTLAND.
Says Improved Machinery Is Im
mensely Increasing Output of
Alaskan Mines.
William Ogllvle, ex-Govern'r of Yukon
Territory, and owner of valuable mining-
propertie. on the Stewart River, In
that region, is in Portland for a few
days vlalting; his friend. Dr. E. O.
Smith. Ex-Governor Ogilvle is a pio
neer of the Yukon country, having- been
sent there In 1887 by the Canadian gov
ernment to determine the boundary line
between Canada and Alaska. He made
a aecond trip in 1895. In connection with
the boundary queatlon, and also en
gaged In mining, which was then being
carried on on a small scale. While he
waa thus engaged . the Klondike dis
covery wae made, and he waa then em
ployed In surveying claims In that dis
trict and settling- disputes between
miners. ,
"When I returned home In 1901," said
ex-Governor Ogilvie yesterday, "the
Canadian government voted me a bonus
of J5000, on account of my work, and I
was chosen as Commissioner, or Gov
ernor, of the new Territory of Yukon.
That office I held for two years and a
half, returning: home In 1902.
"The output from the mines in Alaska
and Ynkon will be enormously in
creased by reason of the Introduction
of Improved machinery. The dredge Is
coming more and more into use, the
conditions in that country making It
possible to use It over a very large
area. A dredge handles hundreds of
yards of earth, where only one was
handled by the old methods, enabling
ground to be worked at good profit that
would have entailed heavy loss if
worked under former conditions. Al
ready, in the vicinity of Dawson, there
are eight or ten dredges at work on
ground that had been exhausted by the
older processes. The Guggenheime have
purchased a large number of the Klon
dike holdings, and are taking as much
from-them 'by dredging as the original
owners did by sluicing."
