While he waa thus engaged . the Klondike dis covery wae made, and he waa then em ployed In surveying claims In that dis trict and settling- disputes between miners. , "When I returned home In 1901," said ex-Governor Ogilvie yesterday, "the Canadian government voted me a bonus of J5000, on account of my work, and I was chosen as Commissioner, or Gov ernor, of the new Territory of Yukon. That office I held for two years and a half, returning: home In 1902. "The output from the mines in Alaska and Ynkon will be enormously in creased by reason of the Introduction of Improved machinery. The dredge Is coming more and more into use, the conditions in that country making It possible to use It over a very large area. A dredge handles hundreds of yards of earth, where only one was handled by the old methods, enabling ground to be worked at good profit that would have entailed heavy loss if worked under former conditions. Al ready, in the vicinity of Dawson, there are eight or ten dredges at work on ground that had been exhausted by the older processes. The Guggenheime have purchased a large number of the Klon dike holdings, and are taking as much from-them 'by dredging as the original owners did by sluicing." WILLIAM H.
