    FRAUD APPARENT
IfJ REGISTRATION
Democrats Proved to Have
Sworn in as Republic
ans for Purpose.
RETURNS UNCOVER PLOT
Comparison of Registration in All
Parts of State With Vote
Cast Reveals That Vnderhand
Methods Were Employed.
Fraud In registration is plainly
marked in the returns of last Tues
day's election. The fraud was com
mitted mostly by Democrats, partly by
Socialists and in small degree by Pro
hibitionists. All registered as Repub
licans and falsely sworn as members
of that political party. But they cast
their ballots for Bryan. Debs and
t'haftn. and In doing so boosted the
vote of their respective parties far
ibirt their party registration. Under
these circumstances. It would be ex
pected that the Republican vote would
fa I! below Its registration. That is Just
what harpe'-ed.
Although 8S.39S electors registered
as Republicans. Taft received only 62,
171 votes, a falling off of 14.225. Al
though but 32.26: persons registered as
Democrats. Bryan polled 39.000 votes,
an Increase of 7262. Although only
214 persons registered as Prohibition
ists. Chafln received 2800 votes, an al
though only 51 electors register.-,! as
Socialists. Debs received 7000 votes.
These figures are compiled from com
plete returns from 26 out of 34 coun
ties and from partial returns from the
remaining eight remote and small
counties.
Slate Vote Analyzed.
In every county. fewer Republican
votes were cast than were registered. In
every county but five, more Democratic
votes were cast than were registered, the
five blng Baker. Crook. Lake and Union.
The same was true as to the Socialists
in every counly except Baker and Coos,
and as to the Prohibitionists Id every
r.iunty except Baker, Columbia, Coos,
Polk and Sherman.
The total vote was 17 per cent short of
the registered total. 133,129. and amounted
to lll.". This total vote and the regis
tered vote were apportioned as follows:

Totals 111.0O0 13.1.12
It will be observed that although the
total vote Is 17 per cent short of the
registered total, the Republican vote Is
2S per cent short of the Republican reg
istration, while the Democratic vote Is
22 per cent higher than the Democratic
registration, the Debs vote la nearly
double the Socialist registration and the
i halln vote Is 20 per cent higher than
the Prohibition registration.
Kept Away From the Polls.
It appears, therefore, that 17 per cent
of the registered electors of all parties
did not reach the polls. This means
thst of the H6..T6 persons registered a
Republicans. 14.677 failed to reach the
polls and 71.703 voted. Of this latter
number. Taft polled C,10: therefore.
i9 persons voter for Bryan, Debs,
Chafln and Hvsgen. who were falsely
registered as Republicans. Most of them
undoubtedly cast their ballots for Bryan.
And while some of them did so because
converted In the campaign to the Ne
hraskan. It Is fair to say that as many
electors, or perhaps more, registered aa
Democrats, were converted to Taft. It
is not too much to say that almost 10.
"' voters cast their ballots against Taft
who were registered as Republicans
They so registered last Spring, most of
them In order to participate In Repub
lican nominations, particularly In the
Republican nomination for United States
Senator, in which contest they succeeded
In defeating Fulton, nominating Cake
and then defeating Cake In the general
election, for the benefit of "their Demo
cratic candidate. Governor Chamberlain.
Bryan Vote Over Registration.
Of the 32.262 Democratic registrations
17 per rent no doubt did not go to the
polls, the same as the Republicans. This
deduction amounts to WS4. leaving 27.778.
of those registered as Democrats, who
voted. But Kryan received 29.nv votes
or 11.222 more than that number. Whence
came these additional votes?
Obviously most of them mere drawn
from the Republican registration, nearly
Kurt of whlrlt did not vote for the Re
publican candidate. Some came also from
the "scattering" item in the above table.
The following table indicates the vote
each candidate should have received. If
the electora had followed their party
registration, compared with the actual
vote, allowance being made for the 17
per cent absence from the polls:

IXJXDOX. Nov. ".(Special.) The re
mains of a Roman villa at Hemsworth
Farm about eight miles from Wimborne
in Dorset, the existence of which was
known as long ago as 1831. but which
for many year, has been covered with
earth, the field being regularly under
the plough. hSve recently been uncovered.
Of tlie series of tesselated floors and
fragments two deserve special notice, not
only because of their fairly perfect state
of preservation but because of their elab
orate designs and the excellence of the
workmanship. The first pavement 13 feet
square. Is occupied by a series of con
centric bands, all enriched by beautiful
ornaments. In a round panel in the cen
ter appears a perfect head, apparently of
Jupiter tonans. with six bolts of forked
lightning Issuing from the hair.
The central panel of another floor Is
occupied by an artistic representation of
Venus rising from the waves. andscreen
ed at the back by an enormous beautiful
ly fluted and delicately colored shell, the
rays diverging from the point where the

TITE MORNING
GDMES ASSURPR!SE
Whitworth Football Team Was
Underestimated.
TWO GAMES ON THIS WEEK
College Teams In Position to Lay
Claim to Championship, Though
Few More Encounters Will
Go Far Toward Deciding.
The reversal -sustained by the Uni
versity of Oregon football team at the
hands of Whitworth College at Eugene
Saturday, was the biggest surprise of
a season thus Tar filled with surprises.
In fact the result was totally unex
pected, for, evon though, the Tacoma
team has leen considered a strong
eleven. It was not considered strong
enough to hand such a Jolt to one of
the premier teams In the conference.
The result of that game means that
Oregon, while rated among the first
teams of the Northwest conference, is
not as stroi:g as at first supposed, and
next Saturaay the Eugene contingent
will be afforded an opporunlty of dis
playing whether or not tiiey can be
depended upon for -a chance at the
championship among the conference
colleges, for the University of Wash
ington visits Eugene for the annual
same.
Washington also met with a reversal
last Saturday, and while not defeated,
having played the Washington State
College team to a tie game, the result
Is looked upon In Seattle as practically
the same tiling, for the "U" was ex
pected to score over Pullman. The re
sult at Seattle was a most surprising
contest, for the six points scored by
each club resulted for the same manner
of scores. Washington scored a goal
from the field and a safety, while the
boys from Pullman secured their six
points In the same manner.
While Washington and Oregon come
together in one of the deciding games
next Saturday, another game of con
siderably more, than passing Interest is
scheduled for Corvallis on Thursday,
when tnV Whitman College eleven from
Walla Walla, tne recent conquerors of
the University of Idaho, meet the Ore
gon Agricultural College. This game
means much to the "Aggies," for In
th? event of a victory over the Metho
dists, they will be In line to battle
successfully for the championship. It
will be the first hard game for Cor
va'lis, and much depends on the out
come, for tither O. A. C. or Whitman
will be eliminated by a defeat.
On the other hand Oregon, while
considerably shocked at the recent de
feat, still has a chance to claim the
honors, for the games with Washing
ton and Ortgon Agricultural College,
should they result favorably to Cor
vaMis. would mean Oregon's undisputed
title among the conference organiza
tions. Coach Forbes and his assistant. wlll
be very busy men during the next few
days, for some tall stunts In the way
of practice will prevail In the vicinity
of Kincairt Field. Oregon, with a
Btronger team than last year, succeeded
in defeating Washington by the close

MII.TVOMAH TEAM AS
OREGOMAN, MONDAY,
score of 6 to 0 In the last annual en
counter, and, this year Washington has
an admittedly stronger eleven, while
Oregon, If anything, is considered
weaker. From this It would appear
that Washington would be likely to
fare better, yet the Eugene contingent
will not admit this in the least, and
are already laying claim to the game.
In one respect Oregon has decidedly
the best of the argument, but even the
great asset of three men who are star
punters, if it failed against Whitworth,
it may do so against Washington.
However, the Oregon admirers are hop
ing for better luck when they meet
the Seattle squad, and the old time
spirit of rivalry between the organiza
tions may cause renewed energy on
the part of Forbes' men and result In
another victory.
Oregon evidently lost to the Tacoma
squad because they were caught un
awares by a stronger team than tbey
had expected. The result was obvious,
and while Whitworth must be given
credit for the feat, it is a lucky thing
for the State University that the visit
ing club is not a member of the con
ference, for in that event Oregon would
now be eliminated from all chance at
the championship 'honors.
Whitman College, after meeting the
Oregon "Aggies" In midweek, are
scheduled to meet the Multnomah Club
team In Portland next Saturday. With
two such hard games on in one week
the Walla Walla contingent will surely
be taxed to its utmost capacity, and
if they secure an even break on the
two games, will prove themselves to be
a high-class team. The victory over
Idaho has caused the admirer, of the
Whitman boys to claim championship
honor, for them, and it Is yet possible
thst they may make good.
At any rate the games of the week
will make or mar the future of several
of the leading clubs In the Northwest.
CRICKET SOCCER TEAM WIXS
As Predicted, O. R. & X. Players
Too Eight for Match.
The Cricketers' city league succor team
made good on Its claims Saturday after
noon, when it put its strongest eleven
In the field and won a predicted victory.
No one prophesied, however, that the big
score of 12 to 0 would be rolled up against
the O. R. & N. men, who were practically
at the mercy of Churchley's heavy lineup
throughout. The Cricketers have put
Cumming back in goal, Churchley going
to fullback, where he played a good
game, together with Brown. Mackenzie
was good on the. Cricketers' forward line
and Fenwick and Jago could not be passed
at half. For the railroaders, Hughes
as usual, was the redeeming spot. The
standing of the club, follows:
