CITY GIVES RIGHT OF WAY
Georgetown Council Finally Accedes

After two years of negotiation, during
which the city official and the represen
tatives of the railroad have more than
once been deadlocked, the Georgetown
Council last night passed the ordinance
vacating five blocks of streets in the
northwest part of the city and granting to
the Union Pacific the right to lay tracks
for both passenger and freight purposes
through the town.
Councilman J. W. Dcmott of the Third
Ward a as the only member who cast a
negative vote. The ordinance now only
requires the signature .f Mayor John
Mueller to make it effective. One of the
provisions of the franchise la that the
railroad donate a site for a new C'ty Hall
and subscribe 760O with which to erect
the building.
The Vnion Pacific freight tracks will
pass through the city's present property.
The railroad has already offered a trian
gular piece of ground at the Intersection
of A and Stanley streets for a site, and
th. proposition has been accepted. The
city propose to call at once for plans for
the new City Hall and Jail. The City
Hall will probably be a frame building
two atories high, although the Jail will be
buUt of concrete. The fire apparatus and
firemen's headquarters will be In the
City Hall.

farming demonstration train, made uo of
an engine, four express cars completely
equipped, a sleeper and baggage car. and
carrying eight members of the Agricul
tural College faculty, left this city today
for a ten-day tour of the Willamette
Valley.
TIvj train ' is the Jargest and best
equipped of Its kind ever used In the
United States. The purpose of the tonr
Is to do missionary work in the Interest
of scientific farming. Lectures and dem
onstrations will be given on the subjects
of animal husbandry, dairying, agronomy
and horticulture.
In order to carry on the demonstration
work one car carries two dairy cows
and a miniature model dairy- The nse of
milking machines and the most advanced
methods of dairying will be illustrated
and explained. Another car Is equipped
for demonstrstlon work in animal hus
bandry. A third is furnished with spray
ing machinery; orchard tools and speci
mens of Wrlllamette Valley fruit, which
will be used In horticulture. The fourth
car Is loaded with samples of soils,
grains and forage crops, which will be
used in explaining the work of agron
omy. The excursion Is In charge of Dr. James
Withycombe. director of the Oregon Ex
periment Station, and associated with

Whitman, Willamette and Pacific to
Contest for Championship.
PACIFIC UNIVERSITY. Forest Grove,
Or., Nov. 3. (Special.) The triangular de
bates between Whitman College, Willam
ette University and Pacific University will
be continued this year. At a meeting of
the local Debate Council this afternoon
It was voted to favor the arrangement,
while both of the other institutions desire
to continue the league. Each college puts
out two teams, representing both sides of
the question, and three debates are held
on the same evening at the different
schools. "
The arrangement was first tried laet
year and proved very satisfactory. Whit
man won fhe championship.
A new ruling for choosing the question
for discussion has been adopted. Each in
stitution shall submit two questions, from
which list each school shall select three,
giving first, second and third choice, and
the question receiving the highest number
of votes shall be discussed.
