    KNOX HITS HARD

Senator at. Union League
Meeting Exposes Gompers'
Vicious Labor Demands.
HARD BLOW TO NEBRASKAN
Injunction Question Aired Gom
pors Asked for Bill Which In Ef
fect Would Lcpalixo Black
mail and Boycott.
PHILADELPHIA. Pa.. Oct. 20.
rnlted State Senator Knox was enthusi
ast Icallv greeted by members of the
Union League Club and Its guests, who
accorded him an ovation at the conclu
sion of hla address, which was repeated
ly Interrupted by prolonged applause.
The auditorium was surrounded by
great crowds which were unable to gain
admission, and an overflow meetlnir waa
held. At the conclusion of h's remarks
James S. Sherman. Vice-Presidential
nominee, was Introduced amid a thunder
of cheers. He spoke briefly, as did Gen
eral O. O. Howard.
Discussing the Injunction question.
Fenator Knox referred to the attitude of
President Gompers. of the American Fed
eration of Labor. He said:
Gompers Given Raking.
"Mr. Gompers. assuming to speak for
organized labor, has recently made a vio
lent and sweeping attack upon the entire
Judiciary of the country. an attack
couched In such terms as to Include the
most upright, honest and broad-minded
Judges no less than those of narrower
mind and more restricted outlook.
"Mr. Gompers claimed that the conven
tion which named Mr. Bryan, sneaking
for one of the two (treat political parties,
pledred that party to grant the extreme
demands made by him and Ids follows in
the matter of injunctions in labor cases.
Last year, before the house committee
on Judiciary. Mr. Gompers and his asso
ciates clearly formulated these demands,
specifying the bill that contained them,
refusing all compromise, stating that they
wished the principle of the bill or nothing.
The principles of the bill in effect, legal
ised blacklisting and boycotting in every
form, legalising for instance, those forms
of the secondary boycott which the an
thracite coal commission so unreservedly
condemned: while the right to carry on a
business was explicitly taken out from
under that protection which the law
throws over property. These are the pro
visions to which Mr. Bryan, according to
Mr. Gompers, is specifically committed.
One) Accusation Enough.
No accusatlo . against Mr. Bryan's
character by his foes could be as grave
as this accusation against him by one of
his chief supporters. We have a right
to ask Mr. Bryan if the statement of Mr.
Campers is true. If it is not. then the
support of those labor men who are de
luded Into following Mr. Gompers In his
support of Mr. Bryan has been obtained
under falsa pretenses. If. on the other
hand the statement is true, then Mr.
Bryan stands pledged to a oourse of pol.
Icy which represents the enthronement of
class privilege in Hs crudest and most
brutal form and the destruction of one
of the most essential functions of the
Judiciary in all civilized lands."

Montenegrin General Searched and
Baggage Ransacked on Way to
Belgrade Servian Crowd
Makes Hero of Him.
BELGRADE. Oct. 20. General Vukot
ics, an official of the Montenegrin gov
ernment, arrived here today at noon after
an extraordinary experience at Agram,
where he was arrested by Austro-Hun-garlan
officials and detained for several
hours. In an interview the General said:
"On my arrival at A grain gendarmes
entered my car. dragged me out and took
me to the prefecture of police. I was
then searched and my purse, papers, in
fact everything I had, were taken from
me. My baggage was also completely
ransacked. I gave the gendarmerie my
name and explained my status as a spe
cial envoy to King Peter. I showed
also the passport and safe conduct given
me at the Austro-Hungarlan legation at
Cettlnje, but all to no avail.
"Ultimately I was permitted to send a
telegram to Baron von Aehrenthal, the
Austro-Hungarian Minister of Foreign
Affairs, complaining of the treatment ac
corded me, which was a violation of in
ternational usage. After considerable
delay an order arrived from Vienna in
structing the police to release me, and
this was done.
"I was detained at the police station
for seven hours, and. as I lost my train
connection, my journey was delayed alto
gether 14 hours."
This occurrence has aroused again a
bitter feeling toward Austrla-tlungary on
the part of the Servians, and the people
are greatly excited.
The General is the hero of the mo
ment In Belgrade. A great crowd of stu
dents and others gathered in front of his
hotel this afternoon, and when the Ccn
eral entered his carriage to drive to the
palace the students nuharnessed the
horses and dragged the vehicle through
the streets themselves. Meanwhile the
mob shouted ita approval of King Peter
and Prince Nicholas and cursed Austria.
