YORK Ifl BLAZE
All Parties to Close Their
Campaign in Empire State
With Massing of Forces.
GALAXY OF BIG SPEAKERS
President Roosevelt to Be on Job If
Things Get Warm Enoogn AU
Presidential Candidates to Be
There Indications of Vote.
ET IXOID F. LOXERGAK.
NEW YORK. Oct. 16.-rlSpecial.) New
York Is to provide the firing line for the
nindup of the campaign.
Democratic Chairman Slack has ad
mitted that Bryan cannot be elected
without the vote of the Empire gfate.
Republican Chairman Hitchcock agrees
with Mack, but la Inclined to believe that
Taft will not need the 39 votes, although
they will be welcome.
Th star spellbinders of both parties
wiil be brought on from the West and
South and turned loose upon the New
York voter. The lists furnished by both
Mack and Hitchcock suggest that the last
word is to be spoken here.
"And if things get warm enough Presi
dent Roosevelt will be on the Job," said
one member of the National committee
today.
Not counting the President the Re
publicans will have the services of such
performers as Candidates Taft and Sher
man. Ellhu Root. Vice-President Fair
banks. United States Senators Beveridge
and Borah, a dozen eloquent members of
Congress. Governor Hughes, his running
mate. State Senator White, and 200 or
SO" minor spellbinders.
The Democratic orators will Include
William Jennings Bryan. Mr. Kern, John
Sharp Williams. Senator Culberson, Sen
ator Gore and a dozen other members of
Congress.
The Independence party will also devote
a good deal of attention to the Empire
State. In the closing days of the cam
paign its advocates here will Include Wil
liam R Hearst with some fresh Standard
Oil exposes. Candidates Hisgen and
Graves. Lawyer Clarence Shearn, who
publicly says he will be elected Governor,
various local celebrities and a host of
labor union men.
The "flying wedge" idea Is being played
,to the limit by the Leaguers this year a ad
there are as many different "wedges" as
"devil" companies floating about the
United States. In the last days of the
fight half a dozen different "wedge" or
ganizations will concentrate here and
proceed to whoop It up in the Gmplre
State.
The Republicans are mightily pleased
by recent developments in New York.
They believe that Taft will get the elec
toral votes and that there is no longer
doubt as to the success of the state
ticket.
When the nominations were first made,
the .Democrats delivered a hot fire on
Governor Hughes because of his "big
otry." The claim was freely made that
the party, if successful, would repeal the
anti-race track gambling law. which
Hughes had placed on the statute books.
Recently, however, the big men in the
party have seen a great light. As Chair
man Conner says. "We are not the race
track party."
"As a matter of fact," declares the
genial state chairmttV "the people of
New York, as a whole, don't care about
the race tracks. There may be some in
terest In the prohibition of race track
betting in Buffalo. New York and Brook
lyn, but the up-state counties do not care
about 1t at all. We will not make any
Issue of that subject. Why should we?"
When asked the direct question, "If
the Democratic party Is successful, will
the Hughes bill be repealed?" he replied:
"Naw! We have never given that mat.
ter tuiv consideration. It will not bs
touched."
The truth of the matter in that Con
ners and Murphy have heard some un
pleasant news from up-state. They were
informed with all due emphasis that the
"race-track issue" was helping Hughes
. and hurting Chanler. and that the best
thing to do would be to drop it.
"You cannot successfully attack a man
because he stands for a moral idea," said
ex-Deputy Attorney General Bulger, who
has made a careful tour of Inspection
through various rural countries. "Roast
Hughes for what he has failed to do, but
do not call him names because he has
put the Indian sign on the gamblers."
And much to the sorrow of the "Per
sonal Liberty League." an organization
started here by ra-e track men. the ad
vice of Bulger was accepted. From
which it seems safe to assume that the
so-called "principal Issue" against
Hughes will not figure In the campaign.
The organization leaders who fought
the Governor before and at the Repub
lcn convnion, have all dropped into line.
William Barnes. Jr., of Albany, the bit
terest one of the lot. did not delay in
extending an olive branch of peace. At
a largely attended meeting in his home
town. Air. Barnes introduced the Gover
nor to the audience, and personally
pleaded for "harmony and a vote for the
straight ticket."
Ex-Governor Benjamin B. O'Dell, Jr.,
regarded as one of the shrewdest politi
cians In the state, believes the tide Is set
ting against the Democracy. In conver
satlon with a friend the other day. Mr.
Odell remarked that the Republicans! are
on the aggressive, and that practically
all traces of factional discord have dis
appeared. "Because of the way the nominations
were passed around nearly every big
county leader has an Interest in the suc
cess of the ticket." he says: "Of course
they will vote the ticket straight. It Is
good politics even if they do not like
Hughes.
"The claim of the Bryan men that they
will carry the state has hurt rather than
helped him. There are a good many
Democrats, who would hate to see Bryan
elected, but they had publicly decided to
support the candidate from a desire to be
regular. Bot If they are convinced that
Bryan has a chance, you will see some
lively jumping."
Mr. Odell would not give out any fig
ures as to the possible result, but here U
some "dope" supplied by a friend who is
regarded as one of his Intimates.
Taft s plurality, 125.000; Hughes. 4A0PO;
remainder of Republican state ticket,
75 000. Republican majority In both
houses of the Legislature.
The majority of the Republican leaders
believe that Hughes will run far behind
his associates. Some of them are con
vinced that he will be defeated. On the
other hand there are a number of astute
Individuals who are convinced that
Hughes wilf lead Tagt In the polls.
It is a mixed-up condition of affairs
and pretty hard to figure out. Here is
the way one newspaper man looks at It.
