Deficiency in Rainfall Made Vp
With .21 Inches to Spare.
Weather Still Unsettled.
As an accompaniment to the rains in
the valleys of Oregon and Washington
during the early part of the apek, snow
fell in the Siskiyous yestercTay morn
ing. Tho white flakes fell silently be
fore the eyes of the operator in the
city for fully ten minutes before he
thought it necessary to notify Forecast
Official Beals that a snow storm was in
progress. Suddenly he awakened and
the telegraph key in the office 300 miles
south began to click.
"Whew! Seems like Winter!" ejacu
lated the forecast official when he
heard the chilly news.
As there was no danger of the
storm's reaching Portland within a
month or so. 31 r. Beals dismissed all
thoughts of it from his mind and set
tled down to the preparation of the
dally weather reports, which show that
Portland is the healthiest city in the
world to live in. The storm of Tuesday
the report showed, had ended, and only
light rains fell during the day in Ore
gon, Washington and California.
The amount wiped out the September
deficiency, for the total rainfall since
September 1 is 3.81 inches, an excess of
.21 over the normal. The weather is
still unsettled in the three states and
the temperature is from 8 to 20 degrees
below the normal north of the Califor
nia line.
The rise in the river yesterday did
not exceed the prediction of the weath
er bureau. The river stands now at 2
feet, six inches above zero. So far as
known locally there has been no rise in
the Upper Columbia.
