of the East Side High School, yesterday
afternoon, there was a debate on the
following; subject: "Resolved. That the
rlty of Portland should model Its revised
charter after the Des Moines plan." The
decision of the Judges was In favor of
the negative, or in favor of retaining the
present form of - city government. H.

the affirmative, and Karle Robinson. D.
McQutrk and E. Unrcla the negative.
Arguments on both sides showed that the
speakers had investigated the subject
thoroughly and the debate was credit
able. Professor Galloway delivered the
opening address to the society, pointing
out the advantages to be gained, and he
urged most thorough preparations on
any topic that may be considered. L.
Bargee gave an orlglnnl recitation that
received applause. President Bradford
made remarks expressing hope that the
coming year would be one full of In
terest to all the members. El Garcia,
the critic, submitted his report, after
which a business meeting followed during
which plans for future events were con
sidered and adopted.
Recruits to Arrive. About 5fl0 re
cruits for the Army are to arrive In
Portland Sunday morning at ":H o'clock,
over the O. R. A N. Half of the num
ber will proceed to Vancouver Barracks
by streetcars and the others will con
tinue on to Seattle where they will be
assigned to posts In that district. The
recruits were assembled at Columbus,
O.. from different recruiting stations in
the Middle West. Some of the regiments
In the Department of the Columbia have
become depleted through expiration of
terms of service, and this assignment of
recruits Is made for the purpose of bring
ing them to somewhere near their
Quotas.
Mtu Chorui Tomorrow. The Male
Chorus of Grace Methodist Church, with
60 voices, has commenced active work
for the season, and will make Its first
aDDearance at tomorrow night's service
and thereafter every Sunday evening
throughout the year. A season of great
Interest, both musically and socially Is
planned fur this organization, and re
hearsals will begin at once for one or
more Winter concerts, under the direc
tion of Professor W. M. Wilder, choir
master of Grace Church.

CONCERT SEASON OPENS
Wednesday Evening Will Bring- the
Metropolitan Opera Qnartetto
The concert season will open this year
with not one single star blazing In re
cital but with four luminaries In a splen
didly arranged concert under the direc
tion of Lois Steers-Wynn Coman. The
Helllg theater will house the usual bril
liant audience drawn by the announce
ment of something out of the ordinary line
of musical treats.
