HUHTERS GO AFIELD
Open Season for Upland Birds
Commences Today.
PHEASANTS WOT NUMEROUS
About 500 Sportsmen From Port
land I tirade Willamette Valley,
and Trains Are Crowded With
Armed Men and Dogs.
Harpy ! the man with a good Oog and
a gua. for today Is the opening- of the
pheasant ttuon. Yesterday was a busy
day for both man and doc. and vr7
southbound train appeared to be loaded
with armed guards, ao numerous were
the hunters and their jruns.
The flight for the etutble fields of the
Willamette Valley began as early as
Monday. The advance guard was com
prised of the sportsmen with money and
time, who wanted to be on the ground
early, so that they could got in a few
days working and fitting their dogs. The
majority of the sportsmen, including
some hunters, left on the East Side and
West Side trains yesterday morning and
last night. Those who will tramp over
the fields within a few hours' travel of
ths city will take the first streetcars out
tills morning.
Whether the festive Chinese pheasant
will be found In great numbers remains
to be seen. From reports received from
up the Valley, there is a chance that
many of the sportsmen will come back
with empty bass, for the reports have It
that the birds are scarce.
It was estimated yesterday afternoon
by a prominent sportsman who watched
the twenty-odd hunters and their dogs
boarding the West Side train which goes
to Hlllsboro and other points, that Port
land alone will send fully 00 hunters into
the fields today. And he also estimated
that fully 2000 men and boys with dogs
will be filling the atmosphere with lead
and shattering the. peace of the silent
countryside with the reports of their
guns. Oregon has been famous for its
Chines pheasants for a number of years
and every season sportsmen from all Pa
clflo Coast cities and as far east as Chi
cago, visit Oregon for a day with the
pheasants.
There is never such scurrying among
the sportsmen when the duck season
opens as there Is when October 1 rolls
around. Most of the. duck hunters reach
their preserves by boats which run down
the river late In the evening. Not so
with the men who are fond of upland
Shooting. Some of them go as far as
Albany and beyond, and In order to reach
the stubble fields they must go by train.
That Is why so many men dressed for
the field, armed and accompanied by dogs
Were seen on the streets.
When the West Side train left yester
day afternoon the baggage car looked as
If a kennel show was going to the "next
town." Of course the express messenger
smiled. It was his turn. First the sport
ing goods man has his smile. That's
when Mr. Hunter Is buying his hundred
rounds of shells and renting his guns.
The baggage man has two smiles coming,
one when he sees the dogs loaded on his
car for the outward-bound trip and when
he sees the weary hunter return. He
knows that both going and coming there
Is a 60-cent piece dropping Into his pocket
for every dog that Is chained In his car.
There Is also a fat Chinaman rooster for
the good wife at home when the baggage
man meets a returning hunter with a
rood-sized bag.
