TRIBUTE TO DEAD AUTHOR

Who Wrote "Bridge of the Gods."

Forty members of The. Dalles Historical
Society will no to Lyle tomorrow, where
memorial services wilt be held and a
neadstone placed at the grave of the late
Kev. F. H. Balch. author of "The Brtdre
of the Gods." Mr. Balch lived for some
ears at Lyle. dividing his ministry be
tween that place. Hood River and White
Salmon, and at his death in 1901 was in
terred In the Lyle Cemetery. I'ntil now
hit- grave has been unmarked.
The headstone erected by the Historical
Society Is a tall boulder of native granite
bearing; the name, dates and the words:
"The Bridge of the Gods."
A large delgatlon of the young minis
ter a former friends from Hood River and
surrounding points are expected to be
present.
Fear Frost Damage to Hop.

Reports from over the county indicate
considerable daman to late hops. Last
night and Wednesday night the frosts
were quite heavy in many yards, and as a
good many hops were not picked, it is
feared the loss will be' quite heavy to
growers of late varieties.
Driving Horse Stolen.
ELMA. Wash.. Sept. 26. (Special.)
The driving horse of C. C. Rasmuasen, of
this city, was stolen last night, while
hitched to a light rig in front of a busi
ness house. The only clew the officers
have thus far is meager, but wires have
been sent In all directions and there is
little chance of the men getting away.
