EXHIBIT BY CRACK SHOTS AT
WILD WEST SHOW.
Colonel Cody and "Johnny" Baker
Show Methods Used In Says ot
Indian Fighting.
Exhibition trick shooting is common,
every day sight, often meritorious and
Interesting, but the shooting by Colonel
Cody and "Johnny" Baker in the Wild
West is of the absolutely practical sort,
and requires the very perfection of skill
. in the art. Colonel Cody, in his prairie
experience, both In hunting- game and
fighting Indians, represents the necessi
tated horseback shooting of that time,
as dismounting on the lone prairie or
stalking was often impracticable, dan
gerous, and useless.
Therefore, as near as possible with the
civilised surroundings he exhibits the
style of shooting from horseback, and
though without the dangers of the olden
times, it still has its difficulties. For in
stance, different and unprepared arenas
every day. unevenness of the ground
where a horse's footsteps render liable
severe Jolts as he lopes over hills and
hollows, causes the exhibition to be more
. remarkable than the auditor generally
thinks. The rider has to guide his horse
by muscular action of the knees, holds no
, rein, has many motions to make in load
i lng and unloading the gun and the ob-
Jects are, thrown by an accompanying
Horseman going at speed -with the same
difficulties. If the statistician will figure
on the number of movements of the two
riders the difficulties will be apparent.
"Johnny" Baker's shooting speaks for
Itself. The speed of the traps, the rapidity
with which the objects,, are thrown are
absolute tests of skill and when the dif
ferent positions from which he shoots,
some so difficult as to have been Invented
and executed by himself alone, are thor
oughly comprehended, the auditor should
understand that he is looking at the acme
of trap shooting.
Both Colonel Cody and Mr. Baker have
stood tests in all countries they have
visited with the most celebrated marks
men. Notably in Paris Mr. Baker was in
vited by the Tlriuers du Chasse, the mil
lionaire gun club, to meet a string of their
members, many famed at Monte Carlo
and Ostend. Mr. Baker was placed at the
mark and competed successfully with 37
gentlemen, who were all noted marks
men. He then gave them an exhibition of
difficulties and they tried htm out wittj
some of theirs. He pleased them so well
that he received a cup, a specially e truck
off gold medal and a parchment making
him an honorary member for life. The
spectator at the Wild West will, therefore,
feel assured that he is looking at an ex
pert exponent In the art of trapshootlng.

MAYOR OPPOSES SECRECY
PURCHASE OF PARK LAX'D IX
OPEN SESSION' ADVISED.
Commissioner Lang Declares Pri
vate Negotiation for Property
Only Method to Secure Success. .
What means shall be pursued by the
Park Board in acquiring ground for pub
lic parks formed the basis of a special
session of the Boara yesterday afternoon.
Commissioner Lang favored secrecy in
negotiating for property, but Mayor Lane
and Commissioners Lewis and Wilson
were opposed to "executive sessions."
Mayor Lane said that he beleieved it to
be the best policy to transact all public
business openly, as it prevents suspicion
from attaching to the action of officials.
"The Board of Education purchased the
block for Its new high school building in
absolute secrecy," said Commissioner
Lan. "and that is the only way to do
this kind of business. If we are going
to admit the reporters and have our
plana published, we may as well adver
tise for bids and be done with it.
If we proceed in a straightforward way
to get public parks, and the newspapers
or the public have a complaint, we have
done our duty, and let them complain."
Dr., J. R. Wilson, after there had been
considerable discussion, moved that Com
missioners Lang and Lewis be named as
a committee to consult with City Attor-.
ney Kayanaugh on the best methods ot
procedure in acquiring park property, the
duty of the Park Board in the premises,
and any other information necessary to
the carrying out of the provisions of the
act creating the bond for financing the
parks and boulevards system.

it must recommend property to the Coun
cil for purchase or condemnation for

how far the duty of the Board extends In
this -matter, and where the 'duty of the
City Council begins, and City Attorney
Kavanaugh .will define this important
point, after which, it is said, proceedings
will be entered in earnest
