    SEND LEADERS TO
WESTERN - STATES
Political Parties More Inter
ested Than Ever Before in '
Pacific Coast.
i OREGON KNOWS CANDIDATES
Before November Election All Nomi
nees for Presidency, With Ex
ception of Tom Watson, Will
Hare Visited the State.
Prior to the November eleotion and
xrithin the last two years. Oregon peo
ple will have had an opportunity of
seeing and hearing all of the nominees
for President in the pending election
with the exception of Tom 'Watson,
standard-bearer of the Populist party.
Js'ot to mention his former visits. Wil
liam Jennings Bryan last visited Port
land January 23. 1907. Secretary Taft
was here and delivered an address last
r-prinar. Eugene W. Chafln, of the Pro
hibitionists, and Eugene V. Debs, of
V the Socialists, have been in the city
r during the last month, while Thomas
( L. Hlsgen. the nominee of the Inde-
f pendence party, will deliver an address
her October 12 next.
In addition to the five Presidential
nominees, two Vice-Presidential nomi
nees probably will have visited Port
land before election day. John Tem
ple Graves, running-mate for Thomas
L. Hlsgen on the Independence party
ticket, will be here next Saturday, and
the plan of the Democratc National
Committee to send John Worth Kern,
associate nominee of the Nebraskan, to
this state has not been abandoned. It
1s not probable that a larger repre
sentation of the Presidential nominees
ever visited the Pacific Northwest dur
ing a preceding National campaign.
Eyes Turned Toward Coast.
The National committees of both par
ties also are paying more attention to
the Pacific Coast States this campaign
than they have in years. Several speak
ers of National reputation and ability
already have visited this state, and
others are scheduled to appear. In pro
viding speakers, the Democrats have
been the more active, due possibly to
the fact that the Hepubllcans were
negligent in perfecting .their state or
ganisation and applying to National
headquarters for outside speakers.
For the Democrats. Congressman
Theodore A. Bell, of California, and
chairman of the Denver convention, al
ready has made several addresses in the
state. United States Senator Gore, the
blind orator f Oklahoma, will speak
at the Armory next Friday night, the
following afternoon at Cottage Grove
and at Kosebursr Saturday night.
George Fred Williams, of Massachu
setts, for years prominent in Democrat
ic National politics, will reach this
state aVut September 30. Uis first
address will be delivered at Pendleton,
and then he will be assigned to an
itinerary that is expected to include
several meetings throughout Western
Oregon. In addition to the speakers
already named, the Democrats are de
pending on hearing their nominee for
Vice-President, John Worth Kern, who
probably will be sent "to the Pacific
Coast in lieu of Bryan, who will spend
his tlrrfe In the Ea.it and the Middle
U West-
1 , Rrnnhlirsn Sneakers in Doubt.
Secretary McArthur. of the Republi
can State Central Committee, has not
been advised by the National Commit
tee what speakers can be sent to this
state from the East. It was not until
after Mr. McArthur actively assumed
charge of tiTe campaign, owing to the
illness of State Chairman Cake, that
a requisition for speakers was made on
the National headquarters, and suffi
cient time has not elapsed for a reply.
There is not the slightest probability
that either Taft or Sherman can be
spared from the East long enough to
visit the Pacific Coast during the cam
paign. The rumor circulated several
days ago that Senator Beveridge, of
Indiana, would speak here during the
campaign, has not been confirmed by
the National Committee.
The Republican National Committee
has asked for the sen-ices of Senator
Pulton for the campaign in the East
ern States. The Senator, however, is
not desirous of going so far away from
his home state, and. besides speaking
at several points in Oregon, may spend
part of the time before the election in
the Rocky Mountain States.
Hearst Party Well Represented.
The Independence party has both of
the old parties outnumbered when it
comes to having its National ticket
represented on the stump in this state.
John Temple Graves, the party's nomi
nee for Vice-President, will open the
speechmaklng of the campaign at a
meeting In the Knights of Pythias Hall
next Saturday night. Thomas L Hls
gen. nominee for President, and W. R
Hearst, founder of the party, will be
here October 1!. and both will make
addresses. There probably will not be
any other speakers for this party in
this state during the campaign.
Both of the old parties will rely
i largely on the services of state-produced
spellbinders, many of whom have
volunteered their services. Several of
the Presidential electors on both tick
ets will be almost continually on the
stump In different parts of the state
during the month of October. Follow
ing the visit of their leader. Debs, the
Socialists are devoting their energies
to street speaking.
