OA8CARA BARK MARKET ADVANCING
Demand From the East Improves North-
srest Peel light.
Tbe days for cheap caacara bark are over.
The market, which has been gradually In
creasing In firmness for several months, baa
now become strong, and with an active buy
ing movement on the part of Eastern con
sumers, there Is reason to believe that the
upward trend of prices will continue.
The peel In the Northwest this year '
rery light, dealers estimating It at only 15
to 90 per cent of the normal output. Spec
ulators are out securing all the stumpage
they can. so It la not probable that the
low prices of tbe last few years will be
seen again. Tn the local market sales are
befog made at 8 cent and upward to East
ern buyers, and as orders are Increasing. It
Is believed that Eastern manufacturers'
stocks are email. Tbe supply remaining on
, tbe Pacific Coast is in strong bands.

Upward Movement Is Again

Rumors of Some Coming Announce
ment That Will Benefit the Mar
ket Call Money Rates Easier.
Bonds Are Heavy.
Nir.tr tobk. Kent. 18 The stock mar
ket today showed the relief offered by the
speculative liquidation which haa been ef
fected during the week. The pressure was
lightened, and the requirement of the short
interest left uncovered was sufficient to
cause some rally. The tone was unsettled
and uncertain, and the movement of prices
straggled and mixed to an unusval degree,
Ievelopments outside the technical specu
lative position of the market were not im
portant, except for an aasler tone In the
rate for call money.
Signs of further weakness were to be seen
here and there In the market. The lack of
action toward a disbursement of the Great
Northern ore certificates aroused the rear
that the dividend la to be omitted. Amer
ican Smelting continued to suffer from the
excess of the former speculation and in
some degree from a further marking down
In the prices of copper. Reports or copper
trade conditions were not encouraging and
the lapse of the demand for that metal
gives credit to reports of a similar lull in
the iron and steel trade.
A revival of the subject of increased
freight mum ! considered significant also
of continued unsatisfactory conditions of
railroad earnings. On the other hand. In
dustrious use waa made at the Stock Ex
change of rumors of some coming announce
ment that was to benefit the market, the
nature of which was not disclosed. These
rumors Increased the disposition of the
shorts to cover their contracts and with the
subsidence of pressure on the weak spots
the upward movement gained In dennlte
ness. Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value.
$1,970,000. United States bonds were un

SEATTLE. Wash., Sept. 18. (Special.)
There la a scarcity of good grapes in this
market. More orders for Saturday's trade
have already been received than can oe
fllled with the gropes In eight. Rush orders
were sent to both Oregon and Eaetern
Washington to get stock here for Saturday if
possible. Peaches were steady alt day, with
fancy stock bringing better prices. Good
Fruit sold today as high as 50c.
Potatoes are still weak on heavy receipts.
Oregon eggs were advanced' to 30c on the
Dairy Produce Exchange this morning. Ore
gon eggs have been coming in better shape
lately and there la a better demand.
Wheat went up another ?c this morning,
closing on the Merchants' Exchange at 95c.
Receipta today were 50 cars.
The call for bids by the Government for
19.000 tons of forage has already caused a
decidedly firmer tone in hay and oats.
GRAIN CROP OF WASHINGTON.
Stats Inspectors' Estimates of Wheat, Oats
and Barley Yields.
TACOMA, Wash., Sept. 18 State Grain
Inspectors King and Arrasmith estimate
the Washington grain crop at 2ll.i00.oou
bushels, which Is 27 per cent le?5 than last
year's. Its value Is about ,23.000.000. which
Is only $3,500,000 less than last year, owing
to the fine quality and good prices
After thorough investigation, the state
Grain Commission has decided not to change
the schedule of grades. The acreage this
year Is 313.000. 200 above laBt year s. and
the crop would have been tremendous but

MThe oat crop Is 7,350,000, about 2,000,000
abTne barleycrop is 5,700,000. or 260,000
above last year's.
The Inspectors say the Eastern Washing
ton banks never had so much money, and
that farmers never were so well fixed. They
regard the recent, panic as a blessing, in
asmuch as it hindered the farmers from
pursuing the unwarranted fad for expan
sion, begun a year ago. Last year's average
price of wheat waa 65 cents, and thla year s,
so far, is 77 cents.
