Goldman, Who Tries to Escape in
Buggy After Robbery. .
Leo D. Goldman, believed to be par
tially demented, attempted a daring
and aeniattonal robbery in the Imme
dlate vicinity of police headquarters
yesterday afternoon, and was finally
captured, only after an exciting: chase
and battle with Detective Shafer.
The chase led for a Jlock directly
past the police station and up Second
street for a number of blocks. -Goldman
was drlvinjr In a buggy, while the
' officer was on foot, -but put up a des
perate fight when finally overtaken. Me
lashed the officer furiously acroes the
face and body with a buggy whip.
Goldman .drove, to the Jewelry store
of L. A. Shube. Third and Oak streets,
left the horse unhitched, and went Into
the store. There he asked to see a
revolver, explaining the kind of weapon
he desired to purchase. The man be
hind the counter showed him several
weapons, one of which Goldman picked
up. appsrently for the purpose of exam
ining It more closely.
Suddenly he dashed from the stor 1
into the etreet with the weapon in his
hand, and sprang into the buggy. He
lashed the horse Into a run and turned
from Third street into Oak. Passing
police headquarters In a dead run, he
t'vned Into Second street, and as he did ,
ao Detective Shafer saw him ank gave
chase.
The speeding driver rushed through
the crowd, aarrowly missing collisions
with streetcars and overturning pedes
trians. Continuing his wild career
through Second street, he turned Into
Madison, but was handicapped In' his
flight by turning many corners and
the near collisions with streetcars.
Goldman reached Front and Madison
before the officer finally overtook him,
The officer . seized the horse by the
bridle, and checked the animal. Then
he approached the driver, who turned
viciously upon him with the whip and
lashed him severely before being over
powered. ,

Plans for Celebration Held Back by
Uncertainty of Date Road Will
Be Completed.
nAfter long delays in installing the ma
chinery of the new North Bank road
bridges across the Columbia and Willam
ette Rivers, it is stated by officials of the
road that the inauguration of train serv
ice into this city will probably not be
accomplished before next month. It had
been hoped to have both bridges com
pleted and trains running Into this city by
the middle of September. But this has
been found to be impossible and it is re
garded as almost certain that the line will
not bo ready before October.
The celebration to be given under the
auspices of the Chamber of Commerce to
mark the opening of the road had been
scheduled In a tentative way for Septem
ber but this event has been postponed
because of the delayed completion of the
bridges. The Chamber of Commerce,
which Is sending Out Invitations in con
junction with the other commercial or
ganizations of the city. Is somewhat em
barrassed In issuing the Invitations be
cause of the uncertainty of the date when
the formal opening of the line and the
attendant festivities can be held. James
J. Hill. Howard Elliott and other promi
nent officials of the Hill system have
been Invited and their acceptances have
been conditional upon the date of the
opening being at such a time as they can
get away from their headquarters.
A celebration without Mr. Hill and his
associates would be unsatisfactory In
every way and It Is hoped that they will
be able to attend. When the invitations
were first sent out, it was thought the
new road would be opened in August.
Then when that was found Impossible, a.
date early In September was fixed upon
Now it will be October, it Is believed, be
fore the trains will be running and the
celebration to mark the advent of a new
railroad to Portland will be held.
Engineer Crosby, who Is completing the
bridges, is rushing the work with all pos
slble speed, but the Installation of the
machinery to turn the draw spans is un
derstood to be the cause of the delay.
Missing parts of the machinery have to
be supplied from the Eastern factories
and this causes delay.
It Is hoped now that the celebration
marking the opening of the new line may
be held early In October, at any rate not
later than the middle of the month.
Summer Service Discontinued.
Special Saturday and Sunday beach
service over the Astoria & Columbia
River Railroad has been discontinued, the
last trip under the Summer schedule
having been - made Sunday. All other
trains on the Astoria & Columbia will be
continued until September 30, when the
schedule will be rearranged with the idea
of giving the best service during the Win
ter months.
