Ote Johnson and Jack Graney were
the heroes of yesterday's game with Los
Angeles, which was won by the home
team, i lo t Graney pitched good ball
and with the exception of mtsplaya due
to the slippery condition of the grounds,
his support was excellent. The team
showed lota of snap and pluck and de
serves praise for the way It has come out
of the slump. Ote Johnson delighted the
fana when he waa put In to catch in
the ninth after McCredle had batted for
Whaling. He 'showed himself to be a
first-class catcher as well as fielder and
Is undoubtedly one of the greatest utility
men In the business.
Ellis was the leading batsman of the
day. getting a single, triple and a homer
over the right-field fence. He also made
a pretty' catch of a long fly In center
field.
Cooney set the crowd wild In the first
by knocking a three-bagger along the
third base line and later stealing home.
The play waa a daring one, but per
fectly good baseball considering the
chances of a passed ball on such a wet
day. Danslg was at bat and Gray, not
expecting Cooney to attempt to steal,
used his full wind-up for the delivery.
Cooney started early and by the time the
ball waa to the catcher he was nearly
home and alld safely over the plate when
Easterty failed to hold the ball In his
hurry to touch him He would probably
have been safe anyway and the crowd
yelled wildly In praise of the little short
stop. Champions Even TJp.
Los Angeles evened things up In the
third, when Easterly scored on a parsed
ball after he had singled, gone to second
when Gray was hit. and taken third on
v fielder's choice of Bernard's grounder.
v The Southerners took the lead In the
fifth when they got their second run on
Ellis three-bagger and Delmas' double.
Portland caught up In Its half of the
same inning when Johnson knocked the
first ball pitched to him half way up
the center field fence, scoring Casey. The
Angels got their next and last run In
the seventh, when Ellis knocked the ball
over the right field fence. Ellis had two
strikes on him and had nearly struck
out on a third foul, which Whaling Jug-
gled for a moment before dropping, when
he banged the next one for a homer.
Portland could do nothing In the last
half of the seventh, although Cooney got
to third after two were out on a bad
throw to first by Easterly. Johnson, the
next man up. was passed, purposely and
Danslg filed out.
Los Angeles went Out In one. two, three
order In the eighth and the McCredle
ltes came to bat one run behind.
Raft cry waa safe on a slow roller to
Bernard. Bassey singled, putting. Raf
tery on third, and Ryan went out at
first. McCredle, batting for Whaling,
was purposely given a pass, filling the
bases, and it was up to Jack Graney to
win hla own game, which he did with a
single past third. Raftery and Bassey
scored and McCredle came In later on
Cooney's single past Dillon.
This made Portland two to the good,
but without a catcher for the ninth, as
McCredle had batted for Whaling and
Madden was laid up. A shift was marie
in the line up and Ryan brought to third
nd Johnson put behind the bat. The
combination seemed to be good, as only
one man got to first and two were struck
out.
There will be double-header today at
S o'clock. Los Angeles will play here
for another week.

TINKER NEW DIAMOND IDOL
Timeliness of His Stick Work Adds
to Laurels.
Joe Tinker Is the diamond idol at the
West Side these days, says a Chicago
dispatch. Day after day the fans Joy
ously applaud the appearance of the
Cub shortstop, and everyone expects.
or at least asks, him to "hit the ball
over the fence." that the world's
champions may win the game.
Well may the rooters and fanatics
triumph in the brilliant and sensa
tional play of Tinker, for it has been
the shortstop of the club who has kept
the Cubs in the race, due almost en
tirely to his great hitting. Others of
the team have contributed their bit
toward the general success of the
club, especially Johnny Evers, who Is
only a notch behind Tinker in the
brilliancy of his play during the past
month.
But ever since Tinker, discarded his
heavy bat for a lighter one, a "broom
stick." he calls It, he has. been the
leading slugger of the club, and few.
If any, players In the league have been
hitting at any faster clip.
It was about the middle of July
when Tinker got to going, and he
hasn't let up since, but he wants to
stay In the batting order Just where
Chance has kept him all .the time.
down in seventh place. The manager
moved him up one day and Joe
couldn't even bunt for a sacrifice, and
he quickly requested a shift back to
his old station, where he is doing
great service in bringing runs over
the plate for the champions.
On July 16 Tinker had the splendid
batting average of .198. The next day
he got two hits, and that started him.
Best of all Is the timeliness of
Tinker's stickwork. Whenever a run
ner gets on base Joe can almost be de
pended on to bring him home. He has
hit safely 93, times to date, 40 of those
hits coming In the last 29 games. He
has brought over the home plate on
base hits a total of SO runs, and in
addition has crossed It himself with
41 more. He is leading the club with
extra-base hits, having 16 doubles, i
triples and 4 home runs.
Not only In his hitting1 has Tinker
Won the affection of the fans, but in
his fielding as well. He has played
brilliant, spectacular ball in the short
field all season, with the exception of
the first month. Then it was that the
prediction was freely made that he
would not be with the club In 1909. as
he was slowing up faster than any
other member of the team.
