TITE -MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1. 1903.
FIRST FIGHT TODAY
Vermont to Hold Election of
State Oficers.
REPUBLICAN VICTORY SURE
Only Question Is Size of Plurality
Independence League Slakes Vig
orous Fight and Introduces
New Factor in. State.
MONTPELIEU, VL. Aug. SI. Final
argument in the political ltuation in
Vermont were made on the stump to
night, and tomorrow the people. In
choosing a Governor, other state offl
cer, two members of Congress and
members of the State Legislature, will
decide on the merits of the various
questions submitted to them during the
recent campaign:
That a majority of the voters will
favor Lieutenant-Governor George U.
Prouty. of Newport, the Republican
candidate for Governor, was generally
admitted tonlgrht. but the size of Mr.
Prouty'a majority and especially of his
plurality over James E. Burke, of Bur
llngton, the Democratic candidate for
Governor, was a matter of considerable
conjecture.
Both the Republican and Democratic
campaign managers have fought hard
thta year, realizing that, since Vermont
is the first state In the Union to hold
an election this Fall, her attitude on
National issues would have much bear
ing on the conduct of the National cam
palgn.
There Is an added Interest in the
election this year, owing to the active
participation of the Independence
League, whose candidate for Governor,
Quimby S. Backus, of Brandon, has
made a vigorous campaign.
There are six cities and 240 towns
In Vermont, and at the election In 1904
all but four towns gave Republican
pluralities. All the cities went Repub
lican. The vote for Governor in 1904 was:
Bell (Rep.). 4S.113; Porter (Dem.), 16.
656. The comparison this year will be
made with the above vote.
STATE POLICE BILL IS ISSCE
Strong Fight Being Waged In Ne
vada Democratic Convention.
TONOPAH. Nev., Aug. 31. The Demo
cratic State Convention organized today
by electing ex-State Senator Bell, of Nye
County, temporary chairman after two
hours wrangle caused by rulings of John
Conaidine, chairman of the State Central
Committee, who is opposed to the re
nomlnatlon of Congressmen Bartlett, The
vote on chairman was taken as a test and
proves Bartlett to have control of the
convention. The convention, after the
appointment of committees adjourned
until tomorrow at 10 o'clock.
A telegram purporting to come from
officers of the Western Federation of
Miners was exhibited today, advising
members of the Esmeralda County dele
gation to vote against Bartlett, the author
of the state police bill. The platform
will undoubtedly cause a great political
batt!e. .
Senator Newlanris Supreme Justice
8weeney. Congressman Bartlett. Governor
Dickerson and other leaders are in con
ference tonight on the plank to be adopted
on ths state police bill.
