Grain men mItuu that about lO.OOO.ono
bnsbela ot the new crop In th Pacific North
west have htn mla to (Sat. Practically
II thl wbMt ha been bought by a few of
tbe tarter exporter, the amaller dealer not
being ab!e to operate to any treat extent
because ot the extreme prlcea offered by the
exporters. Theee prlceS In many Instance
have been several cenU above the export
alue ot wheat. A good part of the pur
chaaea are aald to have been on the export
east but where competition haa been en
countered bld hare been made considerably
hither. The etnallax dealer, those who buy
from the farmer and mil to exportera and
miller or to the California trade, are unable
to meet the figure offered In the country at
the preaent time and are practically Idle,
but expect to have their lnnln later, when
the heavy export buying Blows down.
The reeaon for the large operation of the
axporter la Kill a matter of much conjec
ture, aa the condition of foreign mark ft at
the preaent tlm apparently doe not Jutlfy
the buying movement at hlth price at thla
end. It la urmled In aom quarter that
the speculation la purely In anticipation of
Improved condition later, and If thla I the
' caae, the farmer will nnd It a good thing
for them to have uch Influential holder
opoortlng the market. On the other band,
many member of the trade still believe that
the recent flurry and the maintenance of
nlga prlcea la but the effort of aome of the
ahlpper to squeeze other who are up
poeed to have sold short or made, extensive
tonnage engagement.
At any rate, while buying at the moment
la not heavy, prlcea offered In the country
are held up to the old figure, regardless of
changes taking place abroad or In the East
ern exchange. Farmers are holding firmly
In the hope of a later rise, wlille buyer, are
not disposed to offer more and can do abso
lutely nothing by offering lees.
The oats market I quiet but firm. There
la the customary demand, but very little 1
being offered, aa only a email part of the
crop ha been threehed ao far. Old oat
are well cleaned up and aa there ke a good
Inquiry for them, buyers are required to pay
tronger price. Tht keep up the Ideas ef
farmers In regard to the new crop.
Barley contlnuea dull, with the undertone
barely steady. Offerings have been larger
than usual in the last few days.
Grain price were unchanged at the Board
of Trade yesterday. Bid for wheat were
. mora numerous, but a oent pa rated the Ideas
! ef buyers and aellera and prevented the clo

LOCAL Bt rit-K MARKET IS FIRM.

For.
The strong demand for butter and the
steady shrinkage tn the output make for a
Terr firm condition. In the trade It la be
lieved that price all around will be lifted
another cent In the near future. Manager
Vetch, of the Damascus Creamery, aald yes
terday: "We have raised our price to 824
cents and believe we are Justified la doing so.
1 because ot the strong Inquiry and tb lighter
fjutput. usual at this time of year. .We
'snake this price ea say auaautr. We are
opposed to the proposition of discriminating
between a full box and half a box."
Poultry receipts yesterday were very good,
but the demand was flrst-clee and the mar

Springs at 16 cents. '

Color Photography and Crime.
Glasgow Herald.
The new processes of color photog
raphy may play an Important part In
criminal Investigations. At an Inquest
held in London, when a verdict of wilful
murder was returned against a man. the
evidence for the prosecution was largely
bayed on articles of clothing worn by
the criminal when he was arrested and
which were alleged to be blood-atalned.
An exDert thotoKrapher produced a
number of colored plates which revealed
the presence of blood-stain on Uie arti
cles in question much more clearly than
the marks were discernible on the arti
cles themselves. He explained that he
passed a fine Jet of oxygen gas, tinder
considerable pressure, over tne oara
stains, which became ruddy, and then
photographed them by the new color
process.

Business on the Stock Exchange became

MARKET FIRM ALL DAY
Rains in the Northwest, Higher
Cables and Light Stores of Con
tract ' Wheat Are the
Strengthening Factors.
CHICAGO, Aug. 25. The wheat market
waa firm all day, but the greatest strength
was manifested during the last half of the
session. Initial quotations were from 40
to jc above vesterday s closing. September
opening at 93 4c to 93HC nd December at
944c to 944c. The report from the Cana
dian Northwest Indicated that rains were
quite general over the Western Provinces,
while the official forecast for Minnesota
and the Dakotas predicted shower In those
states tonight. In addition to this unfavor
able situation In the Spring wheat country,
the market was bullishly affected by firm
cables and by the light stocks of contract
wheat in store throughout the United States.
Cash wheat premiums here were steady, but
the demand tor the cash grain waa reported
as very slow. Export demand here wa also
a negative quantity. Local bulls were the
principal buyers throughout the entire ses
sion, and by their efforts forced September
up to 4c and December to 944c. Late in
the day price receded somewhat on profit
taking, but the market closed firm, with
September at 934 934 and December at
B4 4&84 4C.
Liberal receipts and continued favorable
weather for the new crop brought out
moderate selling of corn at the start, which
resulted in initial declines. The market
closed strong at almost the top prices. Sep
tember at 77 4c and December at 6rtia864c.
Oats were affected by the strength of
wheat and corn, but prices failed to show ao
great an advance aa In the leading grains.
The close was firm, with prices 4 4c to
e higher.
A brisk demand for the January products
hv local nackers caused strength in provi
sions. The market closed, firm, with prices
from 10c to 17 4c above tne previous close.
