SOUTH BEND HOME BURNS
ENLARGE POLICE PATERS
DETECTIVES 3IOVE TO WORCES
TER BVILDIXG.
I'irst Addition to Central Station at
Second and Oak In Thirty
six Years.
Quarters for Portlands detective
force have been secured In the Worces
ter building. Third and Oak streets,
directly adjoining police hradquajters
on the west. It Is the first enlarge
ment of the city", police headquarters
for 36 -years.
Thirty-six years ago Portland had
population estimated at between 12,000
and la.om. The city built the three
story building at Second and Oak
streets for police headquarters, and
with little alteration It baa remained
in use for that purpose during all those
years. ,
Then there was a force of officers
of a dozen or more; now there are more
than HO men who wear uniforms; then
there was an average of one or two
prisoners a day: now the daily Inmates
of the City Jail average 24; at that
time Municipal Court, was held at Ir
regular periods, whenever there were a
sufficient number of cases on the dock
et or any cases demanding immediate
attention, which warranted a session;
now the courtroom Is crowded daily.
In every department of the city new
and enlarged quarters have been ar
ranged. In many departments the space
having been trebled and quadrupled.
In the Police Department, alone, there
has been no increase, so far, as space is
concerned, since the days when Port
land was a scattering village.
On the first floor of this small three
tory relic of the village days of Port
land are the Chiers office. City Jail,
and captains' quarters. On the second
floor are the rooms for Municipal
Court, clerks office and officers' quar
ters, on the third floor is the women's
ward.
I'ntil the removal of the detectives'
quarters from the second floor a few
day ago, patrolmen bad no plac to
rest when off duty, and there was not
even room for them to leave their uni
forms when going off duty. Removal
of detectives to the two roome In tha
Worcester building makes one addi
tional room at headquarters f.r the us.
of patrolmen.
"This building was erected 36 years
ago," said Chief Gritzmacher. "At that
time it waa rather a pretentious place
for a police station of a city of Port
lands size. Now the city has a popu
lation of considerably more than
200.000, and the station has to take care
of a correspondingly large number of
people. But we haven't an Inch more
room. The police is the only depart
ment ot the city which has not been
given more space." p

Get Close to Nature
These warm Summer days beckon you to the mountains, to the fishing streams,
to the sea shore. If you're going to remain in town, the next best thing is to
get your meat. as pure and fresh and sweet as Nature planned it. There's
nothing artificial about Smith's meats; they're home-grown, city-dressed, sold
fresh. They taste so different and are far, far, cheaper than any ice-car meats
brought to Portland by the Beef Trust.
