Only Million Pounds of Wool
Left in Eastern Oregon. ,
GREEN TALKS OF SALES
Growers Well Satisfied With Results,
as Best Clips Brought More Than
Anticipated Quality Not
Up to Average.
Charles H. Green, the widely-known wool
buyer for Koshland & Co., of San Fran
cisco and Boston, has returned to Portland
from his annual Summer campaign in East
ern Oregon.
"The sheep men are well satisfied with
the result of the season's trade." said Mr.
Green yesterday. "On good wools they real
ised one cent more than they anticipated.
The low priced wools, however, those of
heavy shrinkage, were slow sellers. Quite
a few of this kind were left unsold
"In Oregon and Washington about 14,000,
000 pounds were sold at prices ranging from
5 to J -84 cents. The average price was
about 6 cents under last year's figure. The
lower prices were marie necessary by the
conditions of the wools this year. There
was very heavy shrinkage due" to the open
Winter and sand storms in March and
April.
"The clip of Eastern Oregon wu about
U.OOO.OOO pounds and of Washington 3,000.
OOO pound. Shipments out of Eastern Ore
iron to date have been 8,300.000 pounds In
the grease and 4,5-00.000 pounds were bought
for scouring. One million pounds are left
In growers' hands. The Eastern Oregon
clip was a little larger than last year, a
the sheep sheared a little heavier.
"The woo! buying this season was more
evenly divided among the Eastern buyers
than formerly. The principal houses repre
sented secured about 1,500,000 pounds each.
"An association was formed, known as
the Wool Buyers' Association, to encourage
growers to put their wools up In better
shape and to discriminate among those
who do not. The object Is to educate the
growers and they are giving us a lot of
assistance."
WASHINGTON HOP CROP 18 &MALI
Harry Hart Bays it Will Not Exceed 17,000
Bales.
H. l. Hart has reduced his estimate of
the Washington hop crop. He has Just re
turned from a trip through that state and
ays the outlook Is not promising.
"An outside figure on the crop," said Mr.
Hart, "would be 17.000 hales and they will
do well If they get 15,000. The yards all
over the state are in bad shape, as the
result of lack of cultivation, and plowed
out yards are numerous. I think, for the
United States as a whole, 220.000 bales
would be a big estimate for this year's
crop.
"Ross Wood is just back from a trip
through the Oregon hop districts and we
have reduced our estimate for Oregon to
80,000 to 90.000 bales. The California crop
promies 65,000 to 70,000 bales and New
York 46,000 bales, about the same as last
year."
Selling crops at a loss has awakened the
Josephine County' growers to the necessity
of finding some other crop fof their lands.
A dispatch from Grants Paen says:
The hop crop of Rogue River Valley will
be fully 50 per cent less than that of two
years ago. The cause for this decrease Is
that so many yards have been dug up and
other yards are not being cultivated this
season. Thoe that are being cared for are
in fine condition, and the yield will be large
nd the Quality first class.
While hops produce well in Rogue River
Valley, yet fpr the past ton years the hop
ralwrs, by reason of low prices, have made
far less money than have the alfalTa and
f rult-groweiw. So completely discouraged are
the hop-growers that it Is likely that within"
two years the last yard In this valley will be
plowed up and the land put to orchard or
graes.
The Department of Agriculture, in its
bulletin on crop conditions up to July 1,
placed the condition of the American hop
crop at 83.8, aa compared! with S9.6 on
July 1. 1007.
There were no new developments in the
local market yesterday. No transactions in
IflOTs have been reported since the pur
chase of the Flannagan ft Cornell lot by Ed
C. Herren. There Is still talk of 10 cents
being offered in the country for contracts.
INQUIRY FOR OIJ CROP WHEAT
Fpot Prices Are Advanced Nothing Doing
In Futures.
There ts some Inquiry for old wheat, and
as but little Is to be had. buyers are offer
ing better prices than were quoted recently.
Club wheat was quoted at 8rt cents and
bluestem at 88 cents yesterday, and It is
probable an advance over these figures
would be paid to effect purchases.
The market for new wheat has not opened
yet. Offers have been made in the country
at 82 cents for club and S4 cents for blue
stem without any effect on grower.
At the Board of Trade the market was
nominal and unohanjed at 81 cents lor both
deliveries. September oats were 2 cents
lower nnd Iecember unchanged. There waa
an advance of 2H cents in September barley
nd the later month was steady at $1.12.
Receipts for the day were 3R55 sack
wheat. JS cars oats. 8 cars barley, and 6
cars and 18 tona hay.

FRESH FRVIT IV LARGE SfprLY
Front Street Well Storked With Nearly
All Varieties.
Front street was heavily stocked with
nearly all varieties of fruit and vegetables
yesterday, and trading was on a fair scale.
Among the arrivals were 2 cars of bananas,
one of cantaloupes and one of new Cali
fornia potatoes.
The demand for cantaloupes waa strong,
and the best offerings were advanced to
$2 2.V Apricots were in full supply and
dragging, and it is probable the abundance
of California fruit offering will bring down
the price of the excellent Oregon apricots
that are now coming in. Berries of all
kinds were quoted firm. There Is a tem
porary scarcity of lemons.
A straight car of California plums Is due
Monday. New Gravenstsln apple will also
be In on that day.
BUTTER PRODUCTION IS DECREASING
Market Kept In Firm Condition by Good
Demand.
A steady decrease is reported In butter
production, both In the city and up the
valley. With the demand practically aa
trong as before the market Is kept in firm
trim.
The demand for strictly fresh eggs Is good
and on those that come up to the standard
25 cents is the quotation. Receipts from
the country are light, and the deftclencv is
made up not only with Eastern eggs, but
with local storage eggs as well.
Poultry arrivals were moderate, and the
demand strong, especially for chickens.

MARKET FIRM
But Speculation . in Stocks
Falls Off.
NO PRESSURE TO SELL
Preliminary Estimates of the Cur
rency Movement Show Tide
Turned Toward the Interior.
Crop Sews Is Good.
NEW YORK. July 17. The atock market
Bunk another degree into dullness today,
with somewhat ominous effect, on speculative
sentiment at times. The usually active
list was much neglected and showed evi
dence of selling to take profits, which sug
gested an effective obstacle to further ad
vances in the price level. On any consid
erable recession of prices, however there
was a distinct subsidence of selling, the
supply of stocks dropping to nominal pro
portions and the decline coming to a pause
in spite of the light demand. This Is the
feature of the market that has been most
marked during the whole of the week.
There were brought forward Into promi
nence today a number of new features of
strength, which served as a sustaining in
fluence on the whole list, although not as
influential to that end as some of the more
prominent stocks which were selling earlier
in the week.
Preliminary estimates on the week's cur
rency movement give decisive evidence of
the turning tide of the movement with the
interior. There has been a heavy increase
in shipments to the interior by banks this
week, while receipts have been correspond
ingly cut down.
Crop' news was good.- the official weather
map showing a plentiful rainfall in the
Northwestern country, where the greatest
anxiety has existed for lack of moisture.
Bonds were firm, some of the convertible
issues advancing smartly in company with
their stocks. Total sale, par value, $4,-
348.000.. United States bonds were un
changed on call.
