INCLINED TO HOLD
Valley Woolgrowers Expect
Better Prices.
EASTERN OREGON ACTIVE
ev Wools From This State Attract
Much Interest in Boston Slight
Improvement in General
Situation.
Wool is now coming forward a little more
freely from the Valley, though many grow
ers show a disposition to hold back In view
Of the recent advance In prices. The gen
eral Quotation now Is 124 to 15 cents, the
top price for the choicest No. 2. Very little
wool was sold at the opening of the season,
when the price was around 11 cents, and it
Is estimated that over half of the clip i
till in growers' hands.
Eastern Oregon wools are pretty well .sold
vut. Another sale Is scheduled for Monday
at Shaniko, which will probably wind up
th sealed bid sales. A considerable quan
tity of the poorer grades are being sold East
of the mountains at private sale on the
basis of prices established at the public
sales. Most of these are being taken by
scourers'.
Sales and contracts in Montana are re
ported at 15 to 17c. including several well
known but not particularly desirable clips
at 15 He and the Balr clip of 1,300,000
pounds at 10c. The report is that growers
are expecting 18 to 19c for good staple clips.
Up to 1 and 17c has been paid in the
Triangle section. Other sales In Idaho have
been at s to lflc, including 700,000 pounds
of Malad wools, the deal for which was
closed some days ago. A strong ,Vc Is the
estimated scoured landed cost in Boston of
half-blood. Sales in Dakota are reported on
the clean basis of 45c for half-blood and 42c
for three-eighths.
New Oregon wools are arriving at Boston
and attracting a good amount of interest.
A few sales are reported at 17 to ISc for
staple. The scoured basis Is 55 to 57c. Re
cent sales In the state Indicate an average
price for good staple of 5-c landed.
Reviewing the situation in the East, the
Boston Commercial Bulletin says:
The events of the week have caused a
change In the outlook. Merchants are more
Inclined to look favorably on the future
though admitting that the market is to be
.a ted wools and the best style of clothing
are iiKfiy i meti wim a. guuu nenianu, out
It is doubtful if prices can be established
on a level high enough to i How of any
great margin of prolit. There is no indica
tion of any particular improvement in the
status of strictly clothing stock. Therefore,
'while the sale of combing wools may prove
reasonably profitable, there is the targe bulk
of clothing wools, about the future of
which there is much douht.
In the mill situation Improvement is ap
parently checked for the time being. Dupli
cate ordering develops slowly. Some lines
have taken fairly well, but there is no gen
eral satisfaction in the amount of business
accomplished. It is a problem to many
manufacturers as to what they can do to
keep machinery running. In the meantime
mills that are running only part time and
have no certain hope of Increasing their
output will buy sparingly of raw material,
no matter how attractive its price or
quality.
MOVEMENT OF CALIFORNIA FRUIT.
Shipments of Cherries and Apricots Nearly
at an End.
The movement of California deciduous
fruits in th past week is reported by the
California Tuit Distributors as follows:
Cherries, 17 cars There wtll only be a
few more cars shipped ; practically at the
end of the season.
Apricots. cars The same condition ap
plies to apricots ; the shipping season Is
practically over and only those will be mar
keted that are now en route.
Peaches, 7H cars The bulk of the peaches
going out the last week have been Triumphs
The Hates Early are nearly done, as are
also the Triumph. Shipment of peaches will
decrease very considerably the next seven
days and the bulk of those available for
shipment will be the St. Johns.
Pears, 6 cars The bulk of the pears that
have gone forward have been of the earlier
varieties. There have been a few scattered
boxes of Bartletts. No considerable quan
tity of Bartletts will be picked until after
the Fourth of July and the shipment will be
light until probably the 10th. The crop is
coming on nicety. We are going to have
ood. fair-sized, very clean, smooth and nice
stock. Quality will be equal to any fruit
of this kind that has ever gone out of the
state. Remember this, there is absolutely
no scab or smut on the Bartletts this year.
Grapes Prospects are good for all
varieties In all districts. Considerable num
ber of Thompson seedless will go forward
about the middle of July, with Malaga and
other varieties following In their regular
order.
CAR OF LOGANBERRIES MONDAY.
Shipment by the Brooks Association Wtll
Start on Large Scale.
The Loganberry season will open in
earnest Monday when a carload will arrive
from Brooks. F. M. Lick, manager of the
Brooks Fruit .Growers' Association, has
opened an office in this city to dispose of
the crop, which, he says, will amount to
50 cars. Shipments will be made to Port
land, Seattle. Tacoma. Spokane and other
Northwestern points and the shipping season
will last about three weeks. The quality
of the Brooks fruit is said to be very good.
A mixed car of watermelons, cantaloupes
and tomatoes was distributed yesterday. The
watermelons were soft and inferior In ap
pearance and were quoted at 24 cents per
pound. Other fruit was in fair supply and
steady In price.

Stock Market Breaks Its Rec

SMALLEST LIST OF SALES
Appointment of Receiver for Box
Board Company Creates a Bad

ing Is as Expected.
NEW YORK. July 8. There is nothing In
the modern annals of the stock exchange to
furnish a parallel to the diminutive figure
of the day's sales, which amounted to only
71,000 shares. Many brokers absented
themselves In .prolongation of the holiday
which Is to set In tomorrow. Those who
were present were on the floor from a
sense of obligation and were disposed to ex
aggerate the situation in a spirit of criti
cism of the stock exchange authorities for
the refusal to gran the petition of mem
bers to close the exchange today.
The appointment of a receiver for the
United Box Board & Paper Company made
an unpleasant impression of possible further
mortalities to be recorded among embar
rassed Industrial- corporations, but it was
Ignored by the stock market.
The bank statement for the five days
shows the expected effect of the trust com
panies' withdrawals to bring their propor
tion of reserve up to the new 10 per cent
requirement, which went into effect on July
1, the 11,3K).000 decrease in cash com
paring with the known movement of money
into bank reserves of over $3, 000.000. The
considerable loan expansion ' is in conson
ance with the heavy financing of the turn
of the half year.
Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par
value, $2,050,000. United States 'Js regis
tered have advanced H per cent on call
