ROAD MAY NOT
TOUGH GRESHJUH
Right-of-Way Troubles Cause
Mount Hood Line to Con
sider Alternate Route.
DISPUTE WITH CITY ENDED
Satisfactory Adjustment Matte and
Construction Will Proceed Apace.
Machinery for Power-Houses
Completed in East.
Now that one of the great obstacles in
the way of the Mount Hood Railway &
Power Company, the difficulty with the
city In regard to rights on the Bull Run
River, has been removed, the only thing
remaining to prevent the speedy com
pletion of the project is the settlement
of right of way troubles near the City
of Gresham. However, surveyors have
found an alternate route to reach the
city by a round-a-bout way that would
not touch GreBham at all. If this route
should be made use of, the company
could rush through Its road at once.
Officials of the Mount Hood company
decline to discuss the probability of tak
ing a course around Gresham and thereby
avoid the lands whose owners have re
fused to come to terms agreeable to the
company. However, it is considered likely
that the original survey will be aban
doned and the alternate route chosen.
R. C. Glllls, vice-president of the -company.
Is In the city from Los Angeles
and It Is understood that he has taken
up this matter while here. He was out
on the line yesterday so It is probable
he is looking into the feasibility of mak
ing the change In the route as originally
planned.
The great advantage of the new route
would be that work might be started at
once on completing the grade, which has
been practically finished from the O.
W. P. crossing, near Gresham, to Bull
Run. Work on the power plant at Bull
Run has been halted because of the tie
up of work on the railroad, for the latter
must be finished before machinery for
the power plant can be hauled in.
If the road Is built around Gresham it
Js thought that both the railroad and the
power station will be in operation early
in tlte Winter. On the other hand, if
the outcome of the right of way suits
now pending must be awaited before
completing the project, work cannot be
resumed before the rainy season starts,
for the right of way suits will not be
heard until September.
Fifteen or 20 days Is all that will be
required to complete the grading on the
eastern half of the line. Ninety days
after the road Is open will be needed to
take in the machinery and install it.
The machinery for the power house has
been completed by the Eastern manu
facturers and Is ready to ship, but until
It can be placed the Mount Hood com
pany does not want it delivered here.
Large quantities of cement for founda
tions will not be taken out until the
road is built.
The outcome of the dispute Vlth the
city over the rights on the Bull Run and
Sandy Rivers is very satisfactory to the
Mount Hood company. The agreement
reached means that the Mount Hood
company conveys all Its rights to Bull
Run water to the city and asks only
to use the surplus water passing the
city's intake pipes. In return the com
pany gets a right of way across the
city's property on the Sandy River and
the right to take water from the Little
Sandy River. Construction of the flumes
from the Little Sandy to the power sta
tion was delayed because of the city's
objection. Deeds carrying out the terms
of the agreement are now being made
out.
Construction of the grade for the line
has progressed to such an extent that the
operation of the railroad and the power
plant need not be delayed longer than
the coming Winter.
TROUBLE OTTER RIGHT OF WAX
Oregon Electric la Proceeding, How
ever, With irillsboro Branch.
Despite right-of-way difficulties, the
Oregon Electrlo Railway Company is go
ing ahead with, the construction of its
Hillsboro branch, and most of the grad
ing has been completed from Garden
Home to Hillsboro, a distance of about
20 miles. There is a break in the line,
however, at Beayerton, where one property-owner
Is unable to come to an agree
ment with the company on the price of
right of way. On this account, the new
line probably will not begin operation be
fore September 1. although it is expected
to have the Hillsboro road practically
completed by August 1. The construction
work Is being done by the engineering
firm of William S. Bars tow & Co., under
the personal direction of Resident En
gineer Turner.
It is the Intention of the company to
continue the line to Forest Grove, and
rights of way are now being secured be
tween Hillsboro and the college town.
The date at which the road will be com
pleted to Forest Grove will depend upon
the speed with which rights of way are
secured, but it Is expected that the line
will be in operation by October 1, unless
unforeseen difficulties present themselves.
Good progress is being made on getting
rights of way. Ten cars of steel rails for
the Hillsboro line are just coming In to
be used in finishing the tracklaying, a
quantity of rails and switches having
been on hand for the work since the com
pletion of the Portland-Salem line.
William S. Barstow & Co. expect to
construct a short piece of electric road on
their own account this Summer from
Woodburn to West Woodburn. This will
be the first feeder to the Oregon Electric
to be built by the engineering company
Independently, although plans are com
pleted for a number of such feeders.
Whether this piece of track, which is to
be only three miles long, will be com
pleted this season also depends upon
rights of way and terminals being secured
during the next few weeks.
Will Establish Station at Swifton.
Hill lines will establish a station near
the Swift packing plant on the Penin
sula, for the express purpose of handling
the business of the big abattoir, and the
name of the station has been decided
upon as Swifton. The station will be
built close to Maegley Junction, where
the North Bank road crosses the O. R.
& N. line, and it will be a joint agency
for the use of the Spokane, Portland &
Seattle, the Northern Pacific and the
Great Northern railways. The station at
that point will be built right away and
will be an authorized agency. Tariffs
will be issued by the Hill lines soon.

Another Case in Which the Tonic
Treatment Was Successful
After Other Methods
Had Failed.
A very delicate stomach requires
easily digested food bnt nature never
intended that the food should be digested
before it is eaten. The stomach must
be strengthened to perform its own work
and what it needs is not food already
digested but a tonic The processes of
digestion are controlled by the blood and
nerves, and medical science has produced
no better" digestive tonic than Dr. 'Wil
liams' Pinkf Pills. This is shown, by the
statement of Sirs. Amos Rogers, the
wife of a prosperous farmer, of Syca
more, DeKalb county. 111. 8he says:
"I was a sufferer with stomach trouble
for many years and was only able to eat
liquid food. I tried all kinds of medi
cines and the most skillful doctors bnt
they did not help me. One doctor said
I had cancer of the stomach ; another
ulcers, and others said it was my ne- i.
"During a visit to relatives at Oxford,
N. Y., I was surprised to find the greai
benefit they had received from the use of
Dr. Williams Pink Pills and began to
take them myself. At the end of a few
weeks Iy was eating solid food and con
tinued to improve until cured. I had
forgotten what refreshing sleep was
until after using the pills, bnt now I
sleep well every night. My general
health has been good and I always keep
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills in the house
The pills are guaranteed to be Baft
and harmless to the most delicate consti
tution. They contain no morphine,
opiate, narcotic- nor anything to cause a
drug habit. They do not act on the
bowels but they actually make new blood
and strengthen the nerves. If you
want good health yon mnst have good

WK all like to make some money. Surely,
you sometimes have wished to know how

DO YOUR OWN THINKING.
When hops are high in price everybody
raises hops; the natural consequence Is
the price of hi rs goes down. At this
state of affairs the thoughtless crowd
gives up raising hops, plows up the field
and grows something else, only to expe

as evervbodv has don the same thing.
Jus- think of the absurdity of thi - prin

follows this course.
DO YOU' WANT TO DO THE SAME? W"E
SHOULD THINK NOT.
If you do, you will ask again, "How
did he do it?"
Th fnr-seeing man will watch the
