Knights of Pythias Take Initial
Steps to Provide Home
for Them. ,
ADOPT NEW CONSTITUTION
Will Be Discussed Clause-for Clause
Today, as Will Also Plans for the
Pythian. Home Knights of
Khorassan Tomorrow Xight.
Initial steps were taken yesterday at
th 27th annual convention of the grand
lodge. Knights of Pythias, to care for
used members and provide for them a
home In their declining years. The move
ment was started by Judge w. M. Cake,
supreme representative of the order, who
made a brief address during the afternoon
session, outlining the Idea.
A committee of three was at once ap
pointed for the purpose of preparing plans
for raising funds for the home. It con
sists of W. M. Cake, M. T. Davis and 13.
C. Herren, and a report of Its plans will
be submitted to the grand lodge at today's
session.
Probably as interesting and as Import
ant as any convention in Its history, is
the session of the grand lodge. Knights
' of Pythias, which opened in Pythian Cas
tle, Eleventh and Alder streets, yesterday
morning. It will continue In session un
til Thursday. Practically a complete lict
of delegates is In attendance and many
high officials of the order from this and
other states are here.
Adopt New Constitution.
Deeply important to the order is the
subject of a home for Its aged members
which was suggested yesterday. Equally
as important Is the adoption of a new
constitution and by-laws, which will be
the principal topic of discussion today.
These new documents are to be discussed
clause by clause and sentence by sen
tence and It was stated by members of
the press committee last night that oteps
would be taken, in order to prevent un
necessary loss of time, to prohibit as
much loose talk as possible.
An unfortunate feature of the conven
tion is the absence of Grand Chancellor
Commander John M. Wall, who was un
able to attend on account of Illness. Dur
ing the forenoon session Gus C. Moser
presided, but at the afternoon session he
was a candidate and Judge W. M. Cake
occupied the chair.
Officer Elected "From Floor."
Entirely at variance from the custom
previously followed in the election of
officers and establishing an unusual prece
dent was the election of a certain grand
lodge officer "from the floor." Hereto
fore, it is said, it has been customary for
officers of the grand lodge. Knights of
Pythias, to be elected by rotation, or
rather by promotion. However, at yes
terday's election Frank Menifee, of The
Dalles, who held no office, was elected to
the exalted position of grand vice-chancellor.
For a majority of the offices there was
no contest, but in the selection of grand
master-at-arms, grand Inner guard and
grand outer guard sharp contests arose.
When the smoke blew away, however. It
was discovered that officers of the grand
lodge had been elected, as follows:
Grand chancellor, Gus C. Moser, Port
land; grand vice-chancellor, Frank Men
ifee, The Dalles; grand prelate, W. W.
Meacham, Baker City; grand keeper of
records and seals, L. R. Stlnson, Salem;
grand master of the exchequer, J. W.
Maioney, Pendleton; grand master-at-arms,
J. R. Kerr, St. John; grand inner
guard, I. T. Nicklln. Eugene; grand outer
guard, C. T. Farriss, North Bend; grand
trustee, G. W. Jett, Baker City.
Committees Are Appointed.
In electing Mr. Stinson as grand keeper
of records and seals the lodge took oc
casion to congratulate itself and the of
ficial also. Yesterday's election was t,he
12th consecutive time Mr. Stinson has been
elected to that position. It was shown
that during the past year he has traveled
more than 5000 miles throughout the state
In the interest of the order.

STARTED BY ORATORY
Independence Party Elects State
Central Corrnlttee.
Born last night in suite 509, Perkins
Hotel, the Oregon State central com
mittee of the Independence Party not
league, as Its founder, William Ran
dolph Hearst, ohrlstenea its parent. It
is now a lusty youngster and knows
already how to crow.
It was born amid the sounding of
many orators and skyrocket addresses
predicted a quick supremacy in thi3
state. Though weak by lack of age, a
vigorous and stalwart campaign has
already been mapped out for it.
At the head of the state central com
mittee, as chairman. Is M. J. Malley, an
cx-member of the City Council, elected
as a Democrat, an ex-member of the
state and county Democratic central
committee and once a candidate for
Sheriff on the ticket of that party.
Tom Word, who also had the candi
date ha"blt, defeated him for the Demo
cratic nomination for Sheriff.
Boasting of the name of the new
party as the embodiment of all that Is
good In politics, the Independence party
met and organized last night very
much as the old machine parties do.
And a cruel critic might say that a
decidedly pre-arranged slate was run
through the convention cleverly enough
to make any of the Republican manipu
lators in Chicago turn green.
The suite was filled with enthusiastic
Independents and was called to order by
Hugh J. Mclsaac. Mr. Mclsaac is an Im
portant and effective representative of
his party in the West and tours the en
tire country arousing interest in the In
dependence movement. He is a pleasing
speaker and a capable organizer. In pre
siding last night, he outlined the purposes
of the meeting. It was held, he ex
plained. In order to effect temporary or
ganization. It was held further, he
stated, for the purpose of organizing a
provisional state central committee, and
nearly every person who attended last
night was a member of the committee. It
will be composed of 50 members, the re
maining members to be selected from the
state at large by those already chosen.
The committee will meet informally be
tween this time and July 1 for the pur
pose of electing delegates to the National
convention in Chicago. Immediately after
the meeting electors are to be selected to
the number of eight.
When the time for electing officers of
the provisional state central committee
arrived, Mr. Mclsaac announced that
nominations were In order. The name of
Mr. Malley was promptly proposed and
his election followed Immediately. He
spoke briefly, thanking the convention for
the honor and declared that, when ap
proached on the subject during the after
noon, he felt disposed to refuse it. How
ever, since he was thoroughly in sympa
thy with the movement and earnestly
hoped for its success, he would accept the
chairmanship, provided no one else de
sired It. There was no stampede for the
job, so Mr. Malley was declared elected.
The election of a secretary resulted
in the selection of Nelson Hughes. Mr.
Hughes also spoke briefly, expressing his
sincere belief in the ultimate triumph
of the Independence movement. Other
speakers followed and at the conclusion
of the regular order of business a tumult
of oratory was turned loose. Each of
the speakers congratulated the commit
tee in Its selection of officers and pledged
himself to unwavering loyalty. Head
quarters for the approaching campaign
will be opened in this city within a
short time and a vigorous campaign is
promised. .
"We have large hopes from the State
of Oregon," said Mr. Mclsaac, "and
have every reason to believe that within
a brief time our party will be supreme
here."
Mr. Mclsaac left for the South last
night at the conclusion of tha meeting,
but will return shortly.
