Kast Side Thinks It In Entitled to

for Livestock Association.
Other Doings at Push Club.
After full discussion last ninht at the
meeting of the United East Side Push
Clubs, President W. L. Boise was au
thorized to appoint a commission of five
to take up the question of the extension
of Union avenue from the Willamette to
the Columbia River, SO feet wide, and also
for the establishment of a boulevard in
Albina extending northeast from the foot
of Hancock street. This committee also
was empowered to gather information as
to the best way to proceed to secure a
general system of boulevards all through
the East Side, including the Peninsula.
This measure was heartily indorsed by
M. G. Munly, L.. C. Fones, M. G. Griffin,
I E. Rice and others, who declared that
now is the time to open these boulevards
before property becomes more costly than
at present.
On motion it was decided to be the
sense of the club that the East Side
should be redlstricted so it should have
in the City Council a larger representa
tion. This matter will be taken up with
City Attorney with a view to submitting
it to an initiative vote probably in No
vember. In view of the great importance of an
other pipe line to Bull Run being con
structed as soon as possible,' it was
voted that the City Attorney be asked to
take steps to have the caes pending in
the Supreme Court involving the water
and bridge bonds advanced so a decision
on the matter can be had as soon as
possible. Resolutions were passed con
gratulating the East Side Business Men's
Club and its president. C. A. Bigelow, for
the fine parade it arranged during the
Rose Festival on the East Side.
S. G. Reed and H. C. Campbell, of
the Country Club and Livestock Asso
ciation, addressed the club on the
work of that organization. They also
set forth what the association has un
dertaken at the Country Club's ground,
and asked the co-operation of all East
Side organizations. On motion, the
secretary was instructed to communi
cate with affiliated clubs and ask that
they do all they can to support the
work undertaken by the Livestock As
sociation. Mr. Campbell told some
thing of what is being done on the
ground, and urged, all present to go in
person and see for themselves.
Attention was called to the lecture
by R. H. Thomson,, of Seattle, Thurs
day night, on the improvement of
streets, and all were urged to attend.
In the matter of the city taking over
streets that had been improved with
hard-surface pavements, L. E. Rice,
chairman of the committee, announced
that information was being gathered
on the subject and a report would be
made at a future meeting.
Pesolutions from the Ironworkers'
Trade Council were submitted favor
ing the contracts for making fire hy
drants to local manufacturing plants,
and will be considered at a future
meeting. -

ENDS LIFE WITH BULLET
HUGH M. KIMBROITGH, PAINTER,
COMMITS SUICIDE.
Out of Work and Said to Have Been
Disappointed in Business, Young
Man Grows Desperate.
Hugh M. Klmbrough, a painter, out of
work, killed himself at midnight by fir
ing a bullet Into his brain. The suicide
occurred on the porch of the house where
Kimbrough resided, 352 8econd street.
The sound of the shot and the thud made
by his falling body was heard by Florence
and Laura Nudelman, sisters, who, with
David and Gussie Weiser, their visitors,
were sitting on the front steps, of their
house, 345 Second street, which is almost
directly across the street.
Mr. Weiser and R. W. Johnson, of 232
Mill street, telephoned for the police. In
the pocket of the dead man was found
a card on which he had scribbled, "I
belong to the Modern Woodmen." Deputy
Coroner A. L. Finley, who hurried to the
scene, learned that the young man's
mother, Mrs. E. J. Klmbrough, lives in
Lewiston, 111.
Klmbrough was about 27 years old and
had been living in Portland about two
years. At one time he had been In busi
ness in the linn of Kahler & Klmbrough,
contracting painters, with offices at 1231
East Tenth street. North, but the firm's
business was not a success and of late
he had been working at his trade by the
day. According to the people in the same
house, he had had no work at all during
the past couple of weeks. It is believed
that, in addition to his financial distress,
Kimbrough was actuated somewhat In his
deed because of love affairs.
Rose Eytinge in Recital
BY J. M. QUENTIN.
SOMEHOW, what are known as read
ings or evenings spent hearing elo
cutionary effort are rare in Portland. We
have so many muslcales, piano, vocal
etc., that it seems to me Shakespeare
and Browning are nearly neglected these
days. Last night I had the great pleas
ure of attending a recital given by Rose
Eytinge and her pupils at 564 Flanders
street, on which occasion Miss Eytinge
was assisted by Miss Sarah Glance, con
tralto.
Those of us who have good memories
know of the distinguished position which
Rose Eytinge has occupied on the
American stage, and the celebrities with
whom she has acted. Her Ideals have
always been of the best and her art has
pleasantly mellowed with the years.
Portland is again honored In having her
once fnore a resident, and I hope mi
time that she will make this her tt
manent home, where she has so n,any
loyal friends. Last night Rose Eytinge
had neither footlights, scenery nur cos
tume to help her In her readings, but so
potent was the charm that these acces
sories were never missed. Her voice
and conversational charm were better
than an orchestra.
Along with Miss Edna Irvine, Miss
Evtinge gave a scene from Shakespeare's
"Merchant -of "Venice" and Elizabeth
B. Browning's "Lord Walter's Wife."
and as an Individual reading. Miss Ey
tinge gave "The Nightingales." All these
selections were rendered with rare intel
ligence and personal charm.
Mrs. Katherine Tranchell and Miss
Mabel Selover also were successful in
their readings. Miss Selover In addition
singing two songs. Miss Sarah Glance
sang "You and Love" (D'Hardelot) with
fine vocalism, and her encore was "My
Rose of Yestere'en," by Marie Rich. Miss
Selover has a pleasant soprano voice. All
those who participated in the programme
were cordially received. '
