against the university bill.
Democrats assert that Chamberlain ias

legislative Ticket Will Stand Bean,

EUGENE, Or.. June 1. ("Special.)
Meager returns from Eugene and Spring
field precincts give Cake 239 and Cham
berlain 112 for United States Senator.
Hawley. for Representative, has 180 to
60. Hawley's .majority will Increase in
this proportion until all returns are In.
The legislative ticket will likely be U E.
Bean, W. W. Calkins, A. H. Eaton.
Eaton leads the ticket.
The vote on the university bill is 228
for and IT against. The single tax
amendment stand!- 109 for and 145 against.
The majority against the tax will prob
ably Increase In greater proportion as
the count progresses.
Eugene cast a record-breaking vote
today, the total being about 1675, an in
crease of 405 over the largest vote on
record. The vote exceeded the total
registration by about 100 votes. The
election was a very quiet one, there be
ing no disturbance of any kind. The
voters went to and from the polls in
a steady stream from early morning
until the close at evening.
The causes of such a heavy vote,
aside from the Increase in population,
were, first, the great Interest in the
university appropriation, the local
option contest, the fight on United
States Senator, and the contest between
the Republicans and Democrats for the
office of Sheriff.
The machinery for swearing in votes
was in much better order than ever be
fore. The university vote will proba
bly exceed the total vote cast at any
previous election.

Cake Running Chamberlain a Close
Race in Linn.
ALBANY, Or., June l.-Spec!al.)
Complete returns have not yet been re
ceived from a single precinct In Linn
County. The vote at this hour indicates
that Cake and Chamberlain are running
close. In past elections Chamberlain
has always carried Linn by big ma
jorities, but Republicans have apparently
stayed closer with Cake this year than
they did with the Gubernatorial nominees
Chamberlain defeated. Early returns in
dicate that the Democrats, aided by
Statement No. 1 Republicans, have elected
a portion of their legislative ticket and
possibly all of It.
The Republicans have apparently made
almost a clean sweep on the county
ticket. It Is impossible to make a fore
cast yet on prohibition in Linn, but
there is considerable betting at even
money on this question tonight. No re
ports at all have been received on the
university appropriation or other amend
ments. The votes cast in Linn County
today was unusually heavy.

PENDLETON. Or., June 1. (Special.)

strong vote against them throughout the
county. Cake is only about 20 ahead of
Chamberlain and it will take an offiioal
count to determine who has carried the
county.
Tile Democrats have elected the
Sheriff without opposition and apparently
the Assessor. The Republicans have
elected all the other officers. Including
Barrett and Mann for the Legislature,
the former being for Statement No. 1, the
latter against it. It Is impossible to tell
anything about any of the amendments
as the election officers have not started
to count them yet.
MEDFORD IS FOR CHAMBERLAIN
Jackson County Probably Wet by a
Small Margin.
MEDFORD. Or.. June 1. (Special.)
Medford. with two wards, polled today
a vote of 1152. In the North ward, in
which 622 votes were cast, the count, as
t Is proceeding, shows a ratio of 3 to 4
In favor of the wets, with about the
same ratio in favor of Chamberlain.
8outh Medford. with B30 votes, shows
about the Fame ratio for Chamberlain,
but a lower ratio for the wets. Con
servative estimates show a possible small
lead In the city for Chamberlain. Kubli
and Hammersly are probably elected.
The fight has been on the prohibition
question and both sides worked very hard
and at this hour the result Is most un
certain, but with a majority perhaps in
favor of antl-prohlbit'on. Latest reports

Plurality In County Will Probably
Be 300.
GRANTS PASS. Or.. June 1. (Special.)
Today's election has been exceedingly
interesting and the heaviest vote in the
history of Josephine County was polled.
Cake is running ahead In all precincts
heard from and will probably carry the
county by about 300. It looks like the
university appropriation would carry, but
counting Is going along very slowly and
returns are problematical.
The single tax amendment, from all
indications, will receive a very small vote.
The general outlook is favorable to the
majority of the candidates on the Repub
lican ticket. Both sides are claiming a
victory for and against prohibition, and
however the question may be decided, it
will be very close. No definite estimate
can well be ascertained before tomorrow.
RESULT DOUBTFUL IN MARION
Early Returns Give Chamberlain
Small Lead.
SALEM, Or., June 1. (Special.) Partial
returns from 23 precincts in Marion
County show that the entire Republican
ticket has received a majority, with the
possible exception of United States Sena
tor, upon which the vote will be close.
The legislative ticket, composed of three
Statement No. 1 men and two Republican
voters' choice candidates, has been elect
ed. The vote so far as received shows:
Cake, 828: Chamberlain, 906.
The' vote in the country precincts has
not been received, but indications are that
the county will go against prohibition,
and probably 500 against the University
appropriation bill, and 100 or more against
equal suffrage. The vote thus far on"
the armory bill Is close.
CAKE WILL CARRY KLAMATH
Incomplete Count Gives Republican
Slight Lead.
KLAMATH FALLS. Or., June 1. (Spe
cial.) A heavy vote was cast throughout
Klamath County today. Incomplete re
turns from five precincts Indicate that
Cake will carry the county and that pro
hibition will be a close contest. Klamath
Falls cast 761 votes, of which the 160
counted give Cake 75 and Chamberlain
60. The University appropriation carries
5 to 1. Apparently many.have voted yes
on all referendum propositions regardless
of their import, while many did not vote
upon them at all.
George H. Merrlman, for State Sena
tor, will have large majority and Belknap
and Branton will carry the county for
Joint Representative.

centage will give Cake a lead of over

Early Returns.
HILLSBORO, Or., June 1. (Special.)
Latest returns give Cake a lead of a
few votes and he will carry the county
from 100 to 300. Hillsboro gives Cake
100 votes to Chamberlain's 68; Reedville
and Cornelius precincts go for Chamber
lain, Buxton for Cake. So far as
counted. Prohibition is beaten by about
100 votes and the county w..i probably
go 300 wet. Hawley, for Congress, will
carry the county by 1000. The entire Re
publican legislative ticket, one Senator
and three Representatives will be elected.
The university appropriation will be de
feated, as will also single tax.

UNION PROBABLY FOR CAKE
Early Returns Indicate That Race

LA' GRANDE, Or., June 1. (Special)
Prior to 11 o'clock it Is Impossible to gain
figures except to show the tendencies of
the voters. Cake and Chamberlain are
running a close race with Cake leading
by five and ten majorities In the incom
pleted precincts. Prohibition is going to
carry here by something like 100 unless
signs fail. Where returns are in partially
the dry movement is carrying at the ratio
of about 8 to 10. Returns are coming in
slow. The city, the doubtful section of
the county, is giving prohibition a lead
instead of the expected severe blow.
WASCO FOR CHAMBERLAIN
Governor Will Carry County by Lead
of 250 Votes.
THE DALLES. Or.. June 1. (Special.)
The meager returns available indicate
that Chamberlain has carried Wasco
County over Cake by a probable major
ity of 250. otherwise the Republican
ticket has carried throughout the coun
ty. Republican representative in Con
gress will receive a large majority, as
will also the successful candidates for
the Legislature, N. J. Sinnott, J. L. Car

Much interest was manifested in the
election here today, and 110 votes, the

the struggle being between the saloon

y COUNTIES GO DRY
PROHIBITION" MAKES GAIXS
THROUGHOUT THE STATE.
Seven New Stars on Temperance
Banner Two Counties Are Wet.
Slany Doubtful.
Many Prohibition gains are indicated
by election reports from the various
counties that voted on the wet and dry
issue. Among the wet counties that seem
to have gone dry are Gilliam, Morrow,
Union, Clackamas, Malheur, Umatilla
and Jackson. Counties that rejected Pro
hibition are Washington and Marion.
Doubtful counties are Tillamook, already
dry, and Josephine, Coos and Wasco,
with odds in favor of Prohibition. Dry
counties that voted for Prohibition are
Lane, Yamhill, Lincoln and Linn. Fur
ther election returns are expected to
show more gains for Prohibition. Of
Oregon's 33 counties 28 voted on the Pro
hibition issue, the five not voting on
county Prohibition being Benton, already
dry, Multnomah, Baker, Clatsop and Mal
heur. In each- of the four counties last
named a number of elections were held
for precinct prohibition.
The results as enumerated in the fore
going will be disputed by the contending
forces in several of the counties, but
the returns show plainly that county Pro
hibition has made big gains throughout
the state. The only counties that anti
Prohibltlonlsts seem to hava carried
without dispute are Marlon and Washing
ton. All the reports show that as a rule
the towns voted against Prohibition and
that their ballots were outnumbered by
those of the dry forces In the surround
ing area. The heaviest losses on the
( liquor side are Union. Clackamas, Uma
tilla and Jackson. These counties win
be claimed, however, by the liquor forces
until the final returns are In. In many
of the counties there were more stren
uous contests over Prohibition than over
the election of United States Senator.
In Clatsop County three Astoria pre
cincts voted dry.
Lane voted for Prohibition by about
200 majority. Union by abou.. 100, Jackson
by a small majority, ' Umatilla by less
than 200, Malheur iy a vote of two to
one.

SOME men think $3.50, $4, $5 i's enough to pay
for a shoe; if any of those price s fit your pocket,
we'll show you the shoes that will 1 it your feet, and
suit your ideas of style and finish.
You can pay higher prices tor A hoes than these
will cost you; and you can pay low 'r. We advise
you not to do it, when you can buy S elz Royal Blue.
Less money means less quality; mora mopey doesn't
mean more quality.
