i c TOE MORNING OREGONIAN. TUESDAY. JUNE 2, 1908. CHOSE BAD MODEL Steinheil's Haphazard Method Caused Murders. WOMAN HATCHED THE PLOT Informs Criminal Confederates, AVho Strangle Victims to Insure Ks cape Widow Describes Two of Gang of Robbers. PARIS, June 1. Madame Stelnheil whose husband, Adolphe Stelnheil, the wen Known painter, and his mother. Madame Japy, were found strangled to death on Sunday morning: at the ar tist's residence in the Rue deVaugirard had somewhat recovered from the shock this morning; and was able to give the police an almost perfect de scription of the assassins, ail of whom wore long- black growns. Madame Stein bell was gragrged and bound to a bed by the stranglers. M. Hamard, chief of detectives, says the crime was not a question of re venge and that the plot, which un doubtedly had robbery for Its object, was perfectly planned, executed apd directed by some one familiar with the fact that there was considerable money in the house, derived from the sale of M. Steinheil's pictures, but murder may not have been intended. M. Hamard declined to discuss the nature of the evidence against an Italian arrested on suspicion of being; one of the assassins. Took Criminals as Models. The neighbors of M. Steinheil think he was probably the victim of a model, as it was his custom to select models during his walks through the city, re gardless of their antecedents or morals. This Is also apparently the theory of the police, who say that a woman with bad associations, who posed for the ar tist and became familiar with the house, probably apprised her criminal companions of the opportunity to loot the residence. An entrance was easily effected through a gate in the garden wall used by the models. The bodies of M. Stelnheil and Mad ame Japy were removed to the morgue today and an autopsy will be held to morrow. Describes the Murderers. Mme. Stelnheil today retracted her statement in which she said she be lieved she recognized the woman assail ant as her husband's model, saying that in her first agitation she thought she had, but was now convinced she was mistaken. Mme. Steinheil described the woman as red-haired and described a bearded man, which Chief of Detec tives Hamard thinks will help in the apprehension of the murderers. The assassins secured the cords in the house with which they strangled their victims, and wore rubber shoes like export burglars. The police are convinced that the assassins thought the Stelnheil family had gone away. The police examination of the scene of the crime indicates that the mur derers first attacked Mme. Japy, then Stelnheil, who rushed to the aid of his mother-in-law, and was struck down and strangled with a rord. REFUSES UNION'S DEMANDS Transfer Company at Aberdeen to Maintain Open, Shop. ABERDEEN, U'ash.. June 1. (Spe cial.) The Joljnston Transfer Company today announced its adherence to the open-shop policy hereafter.
