CREDIT MEN AT BANQUET
W ill Try to Secure Next Convention
to the Coast.
Portland credit men met at dinner
last night in the new dining-room of
the Commercial Club. There were 61
covers laid. One of the most interest
ing subjects discussed was the coming1
gathering of the isational Association
of Credit Men in Denver, June 23, 24,
26 and 26. A special car of Portland
credit men will leave Portland June
18 and will try to bring the next an
nual convention to the Pacific Coast
and probably to Portland.
liorgo E. Frost, credit man of the
Bankers' & Lumbermen's Bank, talked
on "The Hank Credit Man," and gave
his ida of what constitutes the Ideal
bunk credit man and the problems he
has to meet. He advanced the theory
that the bank credit man should be
paid directly by the depositors of the
bank. If this were done, he argued,
there would bo fewer bad loans.
J. A. Keating, vice-president of the
Bankers' & Lumbermen's Bank; spoke
on the desirability of different
kinds of loans and placed mercantile
short time paper at the head of the
list.
E. B. Duffy, traveling agent for the
Denver A Rio Grande Railroad, made
a short speech, in which he explained
the plans of his company to take care
of the delegates, the Coast credit men
being routed over that line in connee
nection with the O. R. & N. and Ore
gon Short Line. An entertainemnt will
be given them at Salt Lake City. In
addition to the Portland car, Seattle
will send a special car through Port
land and other special cars will join
the train at Umatilla. From Salt Lake
City the Coast credit men will have a
special train.
Seattle to Victoria, 25 Cents.
SEATTLE, Wash., May 30. (Special. )
The latest move in the rate war between
the International Steamship Company and
the Canadian Pacific Company on the Vic
toria run came this morning, when the
American concern announced that begin
ning next week the fare between Seattle
and Victoria would be 25 cents each way.
Before the tlpht started the fare was $2.
The iw-w rate probably will be main
tained all Summer. The Canadian Pacific
will not meet it.
Says Rent Is Fully Paid.
In his answer in the suit brought
against him by the Hugo Fritz Company,
J. K. Gunn asserts that his lease on the
building on Third street near Bumslde
extends to December "1, 1912. Ho says
the lease was drawn up January 1, 194,
and was extended on September 4. 1907,
for three years. He hss paid his rent for
April and May. according to the answer.
The company brought suit against Gunn
to recover rent alleged to be unpaid.
