WILL SCALE PEAK
Mazamas to Conquer Mount
St. Helens.
PLAN TWO-WEEkS TRIP
Large Party of Members Johi Annu
al Outing and Will Explore
the Surrounding Moun
' tain District.
The llazama outing- this year will con
sist of a two weeks' trip to Mount 9t.
Helens and vicinity. T!ie members of
tha society will scalo the mountain and
visit the numerous caves, lakes and gla
ciers in that locality.
The Mazama Sotaety was organized on
Mount Hood. 15 years ago, and from a
mere handful of members has grown so
extensively that its membership now in
cludes residents of practically every city
in the Northwest. When the Mazamas
assemble at Mount St. Helena, on August
1, thrr party will number something like
200 persons. The members contemplating
the trip will meet in Portland on July
81 and proceed by rail to Castle Rock,
Wash., where, on the following day, they
will start for the scene of their outing.
A number of side trips will be made,
for each of these spots is of material in
terest to tle mountaineers and a trip to
St. Helens without taking in the scenic
beauties of the immediate vicinity would
not be complete. Members of the society
making the trip are not required to re
main the entire two weeks, for they will
be supplied with guides for the return
trip to the railway station at any time
they wish to corno back to the city.
Mount St. Helens is, according to the
Mazama survey, made in 1S3S, S"33 feet
high, and Spirit Lake, one of the scenic
wonders in the vicinity, is 3230 feet above
the sea level. Ei f. Sheldon, of the out
ing committee for 1908, is busily engaged
in sending out programmes of the ex
cursion, and has received a large num
ber of responses from members who sig
nify their Intention of participating.
SCHOOL BOARD FEELS HURT
t
Children In Farado Still a Vexing
Problem.
Relations are said to be strained be
tween the Board of Education and the
East Side Business Men's League be
rause of the, difficulty over the school
children's parade which the league is
desirous of including In the exercises to
be held on the East Side on one of the
nights of the Rose Festival in June, The
Board of Education has expressed its
resentment with regard to the report
published In an evening paper to the
effect that the Board is not in sympathy
with the plans of the East Side League
and is lending its efforts to the support
of the exhibition to be given by school
children under the direction of Trofessor
Hobert Krohn on Multnomah field, on
May 2S. According to President Blgelow
if the Bast Side organization, Chairman
Wittenberg of the Board even threatened
to have the Board withdraw even tacit
permission for the children to take any
part in tlia exercises on the East Side
unless the league apologized for the
alleged insult. .
it is believed, however, that as a re
sult of the conference held Monday after
noon between representatives of the East
Side League and the Board of Educa
tion, it is likely the proposed drill of
school children scheduled to take place
on Multnomah field on May 28, will be
postponed to one week following the Rose
Festival. This will give the children who
desire it an opportunity of drilling for
the chlldrens' parade to be held on the
East Side during the Festival.
SEATTLE WOMAN PLUCKY
Holds Gun at Burglar's Head While
She Notes Down Description.
SEATTLE, Wash., May li (Special.)
When Mrs. Devere Turner was, sum
moned by an excited neighbor from the
house of her sister-in-law, a short dis
tance away from her own, she found
her home occupied by a burly stranger
whom the neighbor had seen prowling
'around the house. Mrs. Turner did not
faint or scream. She dashed past the
intruder and seized a 22-caIibre rifle,
which was lying on a dresser, and which
she had Just' bought to shoot cats that
had been stealing her chickens. Level
ling it at the maurauder's head, she
compelled him to disgorge her purse,
which contained 5, from his pocket.
Then she compelled him to stand while
she seated herself and wrote down in a
note book a full description of the man.
He was so far away that she could not
plainly distinguish the color of his eyes
and walked closer to Inspect them.
Noting this down she told the burglar to
go. As soon as he was out of the house
she telephoned the police.
Her sistcr-ln-law had followed her to
her house and arrived before she finished
takiag notes of the man's appearance.
Mrs. Turner says she allowed the man to
go because she was afraid to take her
eyes off him long enough to go to the
phone to notify the police.

Vole Against Proposed Change in
Oregon Taxation System Is
Unanimous.
By almost unanimous vote, the United
East Side Push Clubs, last night, in session-
at the Sargent Hotel, condemned
the proposed single tax amendment as
dangerous and socialistic in its tendency.
Judge M. G. Munly, Dr. William Deveny
and W. G. Golding spoke against the
measure. William Grabach, of Wood
lawn, argued for the amendment as a
measure that would be Just to all classes

federation to the fact that R. H. Thorn
sen, a civil engineer, of Seattle, father
of the- plan of improving streets1 by dis
tricts, had been engaged to lecture In
Portland by the Portland Realty Board
in the near future. On motion, the ac
tion of the board was commended and all

W. P. Strandborg- Dr. William Deveny

the proposition that the city take over
streets that have been improved with
hard-surface pavements.
On request of William Grabach, the

McMurray Reports That San Fran

. Acceptable Manner. '
Trains arriving this morning from San
Francisco, comprising two sections of the
regular train, will be made up of 26 cars,
15 of. which will be sleepers. -The rest
will be day coaches, diners, baggage, ob
servation and express cars. About 450
passengers will be carried, most 6f them
being returned visitors from San Fran
cisco, who have witnessed the naval dis
play, but quite a number of passengers
who have return Eastern tickets and are
going home by way of Portland, after
having toured- the Southern State.
William McMurray. general passenger
agent of the Harriman lines in Oregon,
said yesterday that San Francisco took
care of the big crowds In a remarkably
fine manner, but that on account of the
number of new buildings going up on the
line of the parade, the builders of viewing
stands doubtless" came out losers.
The Southern Pacific Is arranging to
bring additional equipment to Oregon
from California to care for the transpor
tation of passengers to Portland from in
terior points on the occasion of the Rose
Festival. As an instance of the increased
demand that is to be- made on the road
during the festival, a requisition for ac
commodations for 600 cadets from Corval
11s has been made, the students coming
by way of Albany to take part in the
parade. Thursday, June 4.
