WILL RUN PACKING PLANT
fi. & S. PEOPLE TAKE OVER THE
ZIMMERMAN PROPERTY.
Expect to Operate It Until They Can
Build Large Plant on the
Peninsula.
Representatives of the Schwarzchlld &
Sulzberger packing Interests, who are In
Portland, have taloen over the' Zimmer
man packing plant and will operate It,
ponding the construction of a separate
plant, on the Peninsula, The deal has been
closed for the use of the South Portland
establishment by the S. & S. people, who
will take Immediate possession.
It is understood that .the use of the
Zimmerman establishment will be tem
porary only and that the permanent plant
to bo built outside of the city limits will
bo as lance as was originally planned for
the South Portland site, which was to be
a duplicate of the S. & S. packing plant
In Chica&o.
It was feared that the S. & S, people,
who are very large independent packers,
would not locate here, after the Council's
recent refusal to permit them to place
their plant on the Hamilton avenue prop
erty held under option. .But aftor con
sidering the situation carefully, the S. &
S. people decided that Portland has such
advantages, from the point of -supply of
livestock and as a distributing center, that
the company could not afford to locate
the Pacific Coast plant elsewhere.
, It Is expected that the S. & S. repre
sentatives will appeal to the Council at
its next meeting for -permission to operate
the Zimmerman plant until its permanent
establishment here Is completed.- Louis
Zimmerman, the former owner of the
property, has been engaged by tha S. & S.
people as stockyard buyer.
