TRIES TO MURDER
HIS DIVORCED WIFE
Fred Siedow Fires Shot, but
Plucky Woman Wrests Re
volver From Him.
BULLET CLIPS HER HAIR
Worsted, Siedow Flees, but Is Over
taken by Mounted Policeman and
Arrested Fracas Arouses the
Fast Side Neighborhood.
Fred Siedow, a coffee salesman, at
tempted, to murder his divorced wife at
her home on Eighth street, between Bel
mmit and Taylor, yesterday afternoon.
Only the woman" indomitable pluck
saved her from death. With a revolver
leveled at her head she looked Siedow
squarely In the eye and held him In
check as she might a wild beast, at the
same tjme moving slowly toward him
until near 'enough to spring at tho
weapon. Siedow fired as she sprang
and tho bullet barely missed her head,
actually clipping her hair.
A desperate hand-to-hand struggle fol
lowed. For fully five minutes the woman
and her former husband fought for pos
session of the revolver., Siedow Is much
larger than Mrs. Siedow and far stronger.
But with a strength born of desperation
she caught his wrist, sank ier nails into
the flesh and finally loosened his hold
on the weapon. It fell to the, ground,
the woman seized it quickly, and ran to
the home of a neighbor, while Siedow
took to his heels. He was overtaken
and arrested by Mounted Patrolman
Elimsen.
Siedow, who had been drinking, was
soliciting ordnrs for coffee in the neigh
borhood earlier in the afternoon. Shortly
after 3 o'clock he was seen to pass in
front of his former wife's home several
times, finally entering an adjoining yard.
Seeing his wife in the rear of her home
he crossed over and began questioning
her about the divorce, which she se
cured from him several weeks ago be
cause of threats to murder her.
"Did you get your divorce all rlghtr:
he asked.
"I surely did," was Mrs. Siedow' re
sponse. "I'm not so sure about that," the fel
low persisted.
"Well, 1 am," she said, and turned to
go.
"You have got Just Ave minutes more
to live and you'd better make good use
of It." was Siedow's next remark, and
the woman turned to see him draw a
small caliber revolver from his pocket
and level it at her. "You're not going
to get off this time,." he added, doubtr
less having in mind two previous occa
sions on which he was disarmed by the
police while vowing about saloons that
he intended killing his wife.
"1 did not get soared or he would
have shot me," said Mrs. Siedow, later,
in telling of the scene that followed. "I
told him I wasn't afraid, and looked him
right straight in the eye. To tell the
truth I was afraid to get afraid. If you
can figure that out. 1 looked hirrt in the
eye like you would an animal: He didn't
shoot and I got up close and jumped
at him. I tried to get his revolver but
missed it. 1
"He grabbed me with his left hand,
pulled his right up and tried to shoot
me through tho head. I actually felt
the muzzle of the gun against my head
but only for an instant, for I threw
my head to one side very suddenly.
That was all that saved my life, for at
the very second I did this he fired. It
was mighty close but didn't hurt me,
merely taking away a wisp of loose
Jialr.
"He tried to get his hand up to shoot
again but I threw all my strength on
him, caught his wrist and began tear
ing at It to make him let go of the i
revolver. Very soon I won, for the gun
fell on the ground, I pulled him away
from it and then jumped back and
picked It up.
"I ran then, for I was exhausted. It
was only that my life wa at stake that
I could struggle as I did for the re
volver. I went to the home of a neigh
bor as fast as I could and didn't see
what became of him. This is the third
.time he has tried to kill me and I think
he ought to get about six years this
time."
Neighbors, attracted by the revolver
shot, rushed to the Siedow home juet
In time to see Siedow leaving. He ran
as several people approached. The
police were at once notified and
Mounted Officer F.hmscn galloped to
the place and shortly located Siedow
At the corner of Union and Clay streets.
He did not resist arrest. The revolver
with which he tried to murder his
former wife was turned over to the
police by the intended victim, who
swore to a complaint, charging Siedow
with the offense of assault with a
dangerous weapon.
BAD DOLLARS ARE PLENTY
Counterfeits Made by Turner and
Ramsey Deceive Public.
Complaints continue to reach the office
of United States Attorney McCourt that
counterfeit dollars are being circulated in
this city. Yesterday a newsdealer re
ported that he had received one of the
spurious coins and the fact was reported
to Steve Connell, secret service agent of
the Treasury Department, who last week
caused the arrest of Louis Turner and
Steve Ramsey, ex-convicts and notorious
counterfeiters who are known to be the
men who manufactured and originally
distributed many of these coins.
Since the arrest of the pair. Mr. Con
nell has recovered from several business
houses. Including some of the banks, a
large number of the bogus dollars. So
well made Is the counterfeit money that
It circulates rendily, several of the bad
dollars having been accepted by streetcar
conductors. It is estimated by the Fed
eral authorities that Turner and Ramsey
passed about ) of the coins in this
vicinity before they were captured, to
gether with their outfit. In Vancouver,
Wash. The charge of counterfeiting
asHinst the men will be investigated by
the next grand Jury.

A condition of
general debility,
aside from its dis
comforts, is dan
gerous, for it is an
invitation to every
acute disease we
meet.
Mr. John F. Williams, of 91 1
Lincoln St., Anderson, Ind., says:
"I was run down and suffered a
great deal from sick headaches
and pains in die back. , My stom
ach was weak, appetite poor and
complexion ullow. I had night
sweats, which so weakened me,
that I had little interest in my
work. I tried several doctors
but cot no better and remained
in this cordition until I read about
Dr. Williams Pink Pills and
started to take them. I got so
much relief from the first few
boxes that I used them until I was
entirely cured."
