ARAKS AM) IH'M.S IV FAifi MARKET
Triors Quoted at On Cent Range Decline
In Butter Expected.
r1ght receipts of eggs gave a generally
. firm tone to the market yesterday. Prices,
however., were quoted at a range of a cent.
i'here la a speculative element in the mar
ket anxious to get the price down for
storage purposes and another trying to keep
the price up to prevent storing. The result
waa that 10 '4 -cent and 17 H -cent quotations
were given out on tho street yesterday.
Poultry receipts were small and last
ft'eek's quotations were maintained.
The probability of a general decline In
butter quotations on May 1 is being dis
cussed by the creamery trade.- Supplies
clean up fairly weM at the moment, but
production Is Increasing so fast that It la
believed a 32 H -cent market should be es
tablished on the firs of the month.
The cheese market is also weakening and
ealea at 14 4 cents are reported.
Active Demand for Freeh Produce-.
For a Monday, trading waa very brisk In
the fruit and vegetable line. Among the re
ceipts were two cars of oranges, one .car of
lemon and two cars of cabbage. Three hun
dred crates of strawberries were received
and they sold readily at $2T2.25 per crate.
Another small shipment of cherries arrived
and they brought Saturday's price of $2.30
per box. Vegetable quotations generally
ia ere steady and unchanged. Seattle orders
are In for potatoes, which "have steadied
the market.

Butter Drop- at TVont.
TACOMA. April 27. ( Special.) Wash
ington creamery butter took another slump
today and dropped 3 cents, today's price
being 26 cents. This is the fifth reduction
In two .months when the price hovered about
the 40-cent mark. To compete with the low
prices in Oregon, it Jias been necessary to
cut prfces and the local output has been
Increasing considerably of late. Oregon but
ter dropped another notch, and, is soiling; at

UNSETTLED IN TONE
Irregular Course of Stock
Prices at New York.
UNION PACIFIC IS STRONG
Good Kffect Produced by the Suc
cess of the Pennsylvania Bond
Sale Hallway Traffic Offi
cials More Confident.
NEW TOKK. April 27 Th. action r the
topic market today wa confirmatory of the
larito nrofeiMnonal operations lat week,
based on the prospective sticees, of the
Pennsylvania bond subscription. The sub
scription lists, both, here and In Iondon.
were closed almost as soon as opened, hut
details of the bids will not be obtainable
for several day,. However, the success of
the loan 1, emphatic and brilliant and no
ground for disappointment was left with
anyone who had been prooeedlna; on the as
sumption of the success.
The speculative tone In stocks, neverthe
less, was more or less unsettled and irregu
lar. The efforts to extend the rise in
prices centered In Union Pacific. Inferences
of the principal benertt to accrue from the
Pennsylvania success were made to apply
to Union Pacific. Its forthcoming: bond Is
sue was held to be largely assured of a
similar success, and hpes were professed of
a like heavy participation In Its case by
foreign Investors. Confidence was main
tained that the money market conditions
were to remain propitious for new security
offerings.
The gold export movement also was re
newed and conditions abroad shaped them
selves in s war to promise a continuance
of this movement. Discounts hardened In
London and lurls and sterling exchange
rose at the latter point. '
United States Steel was conspicuously
heavy. It was hurt by reports of a break
In the ranks of sellers .of iron who have
been striving to sustain prices. The price of
copper also was reduced both here and in
London.
Railroad traffic officials gave expression
to hopeful views on account of the good cr.p
prospects. Union Pacific, St. Paul, Atchison
and Pennsylvania were carried to new high
levels for the year, but the movement in
the general list was less effective.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, $4,44SA.0OO. United States bonds were
unchanged on call.
