On account of tlie. failure of the franchise
of tho Spokane, Portland & Seattle for
entrance into Spokane end the grade sep
aration plans of the Northern Pacific, tjie
former road has stopped, all work on the
line between Cheney and Spokane and
nearly lo men are thrown out of employ
ment. So grreat was the opposition afrainst the
plans proponed by the railway that they
were withdrawn. The Spokane, Portland
& Seattle, Is now attempting to find a dif
ferent route into the city than the one
proposed, end on this account the con
struction work is stopped.

Tacoma was hiown tip off Cape Scott
on Sunday nltrht - and the crew of
eleven men had barely ttme to escape
in the dories with nothing but the
clothes on their backs. The Kchooner
took. Are in some unknown manner at
nine o'clock In the evening- and Cap
tain Hansen ami his men fought like
demons for a few minutes to check
the flames. They could do nothing,
and iad to take to the boat, some of
them even having to Jump overboard
to escape the flajnes.
The danger of An explosion was seen
and although they got away as rap
Idly as possible from the doomed ves
sel, they had made but a few strokes
boforo the gasoline tanks exploded
and the vessel went down a short t1m
later. The explosion and sinking of
the boat caused great commotion In
tne water and one of the dories waa
nearly swamped, but fortunately no
one waa drowned.
Cape Scott, where the vessel was
lost is at the north end of Vancouver
Island, but- as there was no landing
place there or any habitation near by
the shipwrecked crew had to row to
Scarlet Point Lighthouse, nearly 50
miles away for food and shelter. It
was late on Monday afternoon before
they reached that haven, the entire
night and day being spent without
food or water, and every man was
drenched to the skin owing to the
heavy rainstorm.
Captain Hansen and his crew were
picked up by the halibut fishing
schooner Celestial Kmplre of this city
on her return from the north on Tues
day, and brought into this port today.
They speak in the highest terms of
the splendid treatment given them by
Captain Freeman of the Celestial Em
pire. The Clara C was a gasoline schooner
of forty-six torfs and waa fitted with
a 60-horse-power gasoline engine.
She was owned by Captain Hansen
and Chris Carlson, and was valued at
$ 1 0.000. She was a total loss, there
being no insurance.

cial.) John Dickenson, J. M. Dickenson,
William Dlckensen, Earl Ransler, Waller
St. Clair and John Riley were placed on
trial here today on a charge of killing
Harnam Singh, a Hindu, near Boring;, at
Jarl Pagh Bros.' sawmill, last October.
Attorney Dan Malarkey. of Portland,
appears with District Attorney Hedges
for the prosecution, while George C.
Brownell represents the defendants.
The state will seek to ' establish by
evidence that the men went to Sandy
and became partially Intoxicated and
then came down to the sawmill with
guns, and, taking a position behind the
cabin of the Hindu, fired shot after shot,
until finally one of the bullets struck
the unfortunate man. Vernon Hawes,
who is also charged with being among
the party, is giving evidence for the
state, and it is understood that he is to
be given an immunity bath. The jury
was secured today and while the direct
examination of Hawes was In progress
court adjourned until tomorrow, when
the case will probably . be completed.
Race prejudice was the reason for the
action of the men, as several Hindus
were employed in the sawmill a few days
previous to the shooting.
ARRESTS FOR IIXEGAI; FISHING
Trapowners and Gillnetters Cannot
Wait for Season to Open.
ASTORIA. Or.v April 3!. (Special.)
Deputy Fish Commissioner Burton, of
Washington, was in the city today en
route to Ilwaco, where he goes to arrest
Grtbler Bros., trap owners, on a charge
of fishing during the closed season. Bur
ton and Water Bailiff Mack, of Port
land, have been patrolling the river to
gether. They arrested W. H. Oaks, of
Catlin. Wash., for fishing during the
closed season for sturgeon, and the lat
ter was tried at Kalama. where be was
convicted and fined J25 and costs. They
also arrested E. B. Graham and S. B.
Butts, of Columbia City, and K. Groves,
of Puget Island, for Illegal fishing with
glllnets, and have placed a similar
charge against the owner of trap No. 2S,
at Tenas Illihee Island. During the
last few days of the closed season they
confiscated two glllnets and 11 setnets,
which they found In the water.
5IVRDERED A'D THEN ROBBED
Body of Jay King Found In River
at Arlinfrton.
ARLINGTON, Or.. April 22. (Special.)
The body of a man supposed to be Jay
King was discovered floating in the river
here yesterday and was rescued a short
distance below the city.
An examination indicated that the un
fortunate man had been murdered and
robbed, there being three knife wounds in
the right eld and a gunshot wound in
the back of the neck, and his purse and
watch were missing. He wore a belt hold
ing a knife and a revolver, all the cham
bers of the revolver being empty.
Papers showed that he had been work
ing for a railroad camp up the liver. He
was 5 feet 9 inches In height and about 30
years old. The features were unrecogniz
able, as he had been dead at least two
weeks. The body was buried here.

The Eugene Commercial Club tonight de
cided to have Eugene represented at the
Portland Rose Carnival in June by 148
men In march and drill. Kach man will
wear a white serge suit, white shoes and
hat and carry a lemon-yellow and green
umbrella bearing the words "Eugene.
Lane County." A special excursion wilt
be run from Eugene and a great crowd
will attend the Carnival.

home late Saturday, having passed
their father, who had gone to

turing Company, was today held ' to
answer to the Superior Court on a charge
of assault with intent to do great bodily
injury. The complaining witness was
J. M. Baldwin, a machine operator In
the composing room of the company.
Holland's bonds were fixed at $390. This
is the result of only one of the three
warrants that have been sworn out by
the printers as a result of the conflict
Monday evening, in which Holland drove
the printers out with a crowbar.

Johnson's Body Found.
GRANTS PASS, Dr., April 22. (Spe
cial.) Telephone advices from Selma con
veyed the news of the finding of the body
of Archie Johnson, the Santa Monica
merchant and mining man, who was
drowned In the Illinois River March 23.
Ever since the occurrence relatives have
kept a man by the name of Ward search
ing for the body, which at last came to
the surface and was caught in a wire
screen. The body when found was in
very good condition but will have to be
embalmed and carried on pack animals
25 miles to Selma - and thence by con
veyance to Grants Pass where it will be
shipped to Santa Monica, Cal.

ed on the California Northeastern to
Dorris yesterday. This new town is
just south of the Oregon line and 11
miles from the steamboat landing on
the Klamath River. Regular train
