land. Or., this afternoon at 8:16 o'clock,
circled above their owner'a house, on
South Yakima avenue at 5:30 o'clock thla
afternoon and then alighted, having cov
ered the disaance of 1A mllea aa the
crow file In three houra and five min
utes, flying at an average speed of
miles an hour. Thla time la believed to
be the fastest ever made for such a dis
tance hy homing pigeons In the North
west None of the ettht ever made such
a long flight before. Mr. Brcchlel shipped
the pigeons to Portland this morning
in care of George Freetake. a friend.
Several dAya ago Brechtel released 14
birds at Roy and the first two came home
Inside of 16 nilmitrs. covering the dis
tance of ?0 miles at an average .rate of
more than a mile a minute. . Next week
he plans to send a number of pigeons to
Salem. Or.

John Conway, allaa Oeorgo Oordon. was
arraigned today on the charge of obtain
ing money on fAlae pretenses, and. after
pleading guilty, was sentenced to the
State Penitentiary at Walla Walla for
a term of not more than five nor less
than one year.
Conway waa charged with distributing
cards, representing himself as a deaf
mute, and requesting money with which
to secure an education In tha deaf and
dumb language. These earda he dis
tributed widely here and In Aberdeen.
Conway, while drunk and after falling
through a showcase, was taken to the
police station Saturday night. Here he
demonstrated that his faculty of speech'
and sense of hearing were unimpaired.
Prpnty Prosecutor lea stated that com
plaints of this method of working upon
peoples sympathies through Imposture
have been ouite prevalent lately.

F.arly yesterday morning a horsethlef
entered tha barn of W. S. Thompson
and stole a mara belonging- to Q. V.
Knox. The animal waa traced through
the main street of tha town several
miles into the country, where It was
found tn a thicket. The thief had tried
to kill it by shooting three bullets
Into the head. When found, it was
not quite dead. however, and waa
brought back. There Is much feeling
here over the affair. ,

Secretary Wilson is today mailing to
the O. A. C. Board of Regents notice of
an adjourned meeting to be held at the
college at 2 o'clock next Thursday, for
the consideration of various matters of
Importance. Several members of the fac
ulty have at various times during tha
past year given notice of a purpose to
resign at the end of the present college
year, and at the coming meeting thesa
vacancies will be filled. President Kerr
has also yarkwia plana for the current
year to lay before the board for action
In time for Incorporation in the coming
annual catalogue.

deserted his wife tn Tacoma to elope,
with Mrs. Kate Saul, also of Tacoma.
and for whom a warrant has been issued,
haa been located in Aberdeen, but shortly
before the arrival of an officer tha pa'r
boarded a boat for San Francisco. Offi
cers have telegraphed the Chief of Police
in San Francisco and forwarded the war
rant by mail. At Aberdeen Gross went
under the name of L. J. Leonard.

The musical festival, viewed from edu
cational and musical viewpoints. Is a
valuable aaset to Kugone. and the great
est thing that ever happened to the man
who directed It. Professor Irving M. (Jlon,
of Rugone. .He has made good aa direc
tor of both chorus and symphony orches
tra. Ailing a difficult position with credit

were present this afternoon and evening

applausa. The afternoon concert- was
Instrumental, to which were added two
vocal solos hy Mrs. Rosa Lutlger Gannon,
contralto, trom Ponchlclll's "I,a Glwonda"
and "What the Chimney- Sang." tha
orchestration of tha latter being by Herr
Roaenbecker. Mrs. Gannon was In ex
cellent voice and received throe recalls,
Vr. Van Oordt. solo violinist, played a
l-m1nu(e concerto by Tschalkowsky. his
encore being a fantasia on the sentot
from "Lucia." Mr. Wagner, aolo Cellist,
played a lS-mlnitte ' Boellmnn selection,
hts encore being "Ths Swan" by Snlnt
Saens. The orchestral numbers conaiated
of: Overture, "Da Ballo" (Sullivan) two
Ooldmark Wedding finite numbers: two
of Brahms' Hungarian, Dances; "Dance
of the ylpha" and -"Hungarian' March"
by Berlloa. "Minuet of tho Fly." fkibulka.
Tho playing of tha orchestra received a
flattering reception and the liveliest In
terest was displayed in tha throbbing
music of tho big haro.
F1n Work of Chorus.
At the closing concert tonight hy tha
Symphony Orchestra one number was the
overture of "Tannhaenaer," by Wagner,
which made a hlg hit, the encore being
the "Vorsplel" from "Txihengrln." The
principal attraction, however, was a
really line dramatio rendition of Dudley
Buck s American cantata, "The Golden
T-egend." the text being aupplled from
TongfeUow's poem. ' Genevieve Clark
Wllaon was the TOsle Rose T.utiger
Gannon, the Bertha: John B. Miller, the
Prince Henry, and Arthur Mlddleton. the
Iuclfer and Friar Paul. Soloists, chorus
and especially the msle voice section all
did good work, the unaccompanied selec
tions being Impressive.
Dudley Ruck, who wrote "The Golden
Lerend," was born at Hartford. Conn.,
In 13, and was the son of a mer
chant who Intended that his son should
be a business man. But the bov's
tastes wer toward music. Most of
his musical education was received at
Lelpxlg. where, at the conservatory, his
fellow-pupils wrra Arthur Sullivan. .1
F. Barnett. Walter Racha and Carl
Rosa. Buck also studied at Paris, and
began the active duties of his profes
sion as organist and teacher in Chi
csgo. where he remained until 171,
when tha tire destroyed his house, li
brary and valuable manuscripts. Bos
ton and New York successively claimed
him. and about this time he served
for one season ss assistant conductor
In Theodore Thomas" Orchestra. In
18S7 he becsme organist of Holy Trin
ity church. Brooklyn. X. Y-. where he
remained many years and won world
wide recognition, both as organist and
composer. Ho is ona of the few mu
sical composers who has so wisely
maanged his business affairs that ho
haa obtained adequate remuneration
from his labors. His compositions in
clude: "Golden Legend," a symphonio can
tata: "Tha Light of Asia." and "Co
lumbus," both cantatas. Mr. Buck Is
also tha composer of many anthems
and church services for the Episcopal
church, also vocal and organ music.
His "Deaeret." an operetta In three
acts, was performed at the Lyceum
theater. New York. October. 1880. His
"Marmlon." symphonic overture, must
also ba Included.

Mary Palmer, wife of Kred J. rainier,
one of the beat-known merchants of
Malheur county, died at the Rocka
while en route to Ontario for treat
ment. The death occurred April P.
Mrs. Palmer was 3! yeara of age and
leavea five children. The funeral waa
held In Jordan Valley. Saturday, April
II. and tho interment waa In the ceme
tery here. People from 40 miles
around were present at tha funeral.
