SWINDLE CITY0F MILLIONS
Immense Volumes of Water Frauds
In Chicago.
CHICAGO, March B.-The city council
decided last night on the investigation of
graft in the water department. The alder
men adopted a resolution directing that
all evidence of misconduct of the depart
ment's employes be sent the council com
mittee. Superintendent McCourt, of the
water bureau, gave out an estimate that
the city has been defrauded of about
$9500 in water taxes in the last 12 years.
The exact amount will be determined by
the Investigation of the books of the of
fice, which will be completed in a few
days. He estimated the city had lost
$5,000,000 through the tampering with met
ers, $300,000 from the corrupt and incorrect
assessment of frontage rates, and $1,600
in stolen material and tools.
