FACTIONAL STRIFE BITTER
HOST OF CANDIDATES FOR

Cntrtl of Republican County Cen

Desperate Struggle.
Strife for the mastery of the Republican
Ovjnty Central Committee of Multnomah
has reached the po:r:t where 175 seekers
of at in the committee hare announced
that they wil! run for election In their
respective precincts. Numerous others
are expected to fie their announcements
with the County Clerk tocay the last al
lowed by law for any candidate for office
to enter the nominating primaries.
The fight is waged by two factions
the one commonly known as the Reed-Bailey-Hodson-Beach
camp: the other as
the Idle ma n-CaJte-Iavis -Cohen camp. The
lart named has been in possession of .the
committee for the last two years and
constitutes the 'rrf:aniat:on' of the
party. The other desires to snatch away
tb mastery of the party machinery. In
nearly every precinct there will be rival
candidates for the committee places, and
In acme cases thera will b three candi
dates, frequently for the purpose of draw
ing Totes from one candidate by means
of a second, for the bene5t of a third.
At the head of the Hods on-Bailey side
of the csht !s F. E. Reed, formerly man
ager of T. C. IeTlte's boom for Mayor.
"While Mr. Todson has denied having any
designs on the central committee, the fact
remains thai the men associated with him
are trying to capture the committee. Reed
aspires to be chairman of the committee,
but It is related that Hodson has in
formed him that the asp! ration is absurd
rd that he will not stazid for it.
There have been various rumors of rup
ture between Reed and Hudson. Foes of
the so-called Hodson ticket scoff at them
and declare that Reed keeps working- for
mastery of tha committee. But there
yeems reason to believe that Hodson
wishes Reed were out of the way. if for
no other reason than that he fears Reed
is Injuring his candidacy.
It is asserted that Reed plans to make
F. F. Freeman chairman, of the county,
if not himse:f. Freeman was offered by
Reed for temporary chairman of the re
cent county convention.
C. M Idieman. chairmaa of the present
committee. W. M. Cake, formerly chair
man. W. M. Davis and Max G. Cohen
are heading the effort to keep control of
the committee. Arainst Cohen, in Pre
cinct 8, the opposition is running I C

6ALEM, Or.. March 31. ( Special.) This

of the Supreme Court used today in de
ciding a case arainst a resident of Port
land -who sold a tract of practically
worthless land hi Lane County upon the
representation that it was one of the best
pieces of timber land in Oregon or Washing-ton.
The court. !n an opinion by Com
missioner King, puts Its disapproval upon
the argument that the buyer should see
the land himself and not act upon the
representations of the seller. The court
holds that fraud was clearly shown, and
that the defendant will not be heard to
say thvt the person who took bis word
and acted upon H was guilty of contribu

The land was sold by O. J. Wisten to
