BY LILIAN TIN'GLE.
IT is not very often that red bananas
are seen in the Portland markets, but
there were plenty to be had -this week
anii very delicious they are, either raw
or cooked. The red kind is particularly
good for salads and has a rich creamy
consistency which is very pleasing: in
those desserts and cake fillings that call
for banana pulp. Baked in their skins
they are nice eaten with cream and
sugar, like an apple, or with butter and
salt, like a. baked potato. Served in the
latter style they go well with roast beef
or a good broiled beefsteak, either with
or without horse radish, as in Jthe well
known "beefsteak a la Stanley."
I saw no strawberries ttils week; but
the rhubarb is particularly fine and well
colored and would appear to advantage
In a shortcake as well as In pies and the
okl-fashloned steamed dumplings, which
are usually so well liked by- boys of all
ajfes. especially when plenty of good
thick cream forms the simple sauce,
tircens are coming in plentifully now.
Besides our sturdy standbys, cabbage,
kale and spinach, there are cabbage
greens and mustard-greens at 10 cents,
dandelion and field lettuce at 15 cents,
as well as watercress, chicory and let
tuce. There is plenty of asparagus, and
it is much lower in price, costing now 15
to Si cents a pound. I saw a little of
the thin green kind at 10 cents. Brussels
spr.njts. celery and cauliflower are all
good this week. Tomatoes are 25 cents
n pound, egg plant 30 cents a pound and
hothouse cucumbers, quite large ones. 30
and 55 cents each. There are large fresh
looking artichokes in just now that come
3 for J5 cents; and oyster plant also is
very good and seems more plentiful than
It has been. Little new potatoes are 15
cents a pound.
On account of the close season only
California salmon is to be had. but there
are plenty of other kinds of fish. I saw
a large supply of sea trout at 20 and 25
cents a pound and smelt from 5 to 8
cents.
There was black bass at 30 cents,
striped bass at 25. baracouda. catfish,
inai-kercl, rock cod. croppies, sole at 15
cents: ling cod. black cod, large Cali
fornia smelt and halibut at 12 cents and
flour, perch and herring the last par
ticularly nice and fresh at 10 cents a
pound.
There was also California shad at 15
cents, hut no aliad roe as yet. I saw,
however, salmon roe (which is much
prized in some places) at 5 cent, a
" pound.
Fresh turkeys x rather scarce, but
the price of them and of poultry gen
erally is about the same as last week.
Spring lamb Is getting slightly cheaper,
hut is still high in price, a. Indeed all
meat tends to be just now; but a nice
fore quarter can be had for IS or SO
cents a pound or a hind quarter for 25
to 30 cents. 1 saw some very special
and delicate lamb chops, cut for an In
valid, at 40 cents a pound; and delicious
morsels they would be, just broiled to
a turn. I also saw some tiIcsj lamb's
tongues for rlckllng. at 3 for 10 cents.
These make & number of good entrees,
both hot and cold.

HARK
A friend said to me: "I don't see why you quote such low prices on yoar meats for your Saturday sales. Why don't you make yonr customers
pay for your advertising, instead of spending a large sum to advertise something yon are going to sell at cost or below?" Now, that is where I
think he is wrong. I believe in giving yon a genuine bargain, one that yon will know is a bargain, one that you will remember about, tell your
friends about, that your friends will tell about, then "once a customer, always a customer." Any time you see our ad you know that we are going
to give you a bargain. I will stake my business integrity on these bargains as being absolute bargains; no question about that. If you don't
agree with me, I will gladly refund your money, after you have used up your meat, will take your word in the matter absolutely. That's more than
fair, is it not? Say, did you like those LIVING SKELETONS that you bought last week? I warrant many a person regretted that they had not
bought their meat in a shop that was not afraid to show their meats to- you and cut it up before yon. HARRY WOOD.

One of the best arguments in the "world
why the meats and fish sold at the
HARRY WOOD MARKET are abso

much of these goods that they do not
