Only Two Weeks "Remain In Which
to Grt Names on Rolls Voters to
Recrire Copies of Initiative .
Petitions by Mail.
Registration of voters went over the
13.000 mark yesterday, 392 placing their
names on the books before 5 o'clock.
Three hundred and four of these were
Republican. B3 Democrats and 19 miscel
laneous. The number was considerably
Increased before the books closed at 9
o'clock last night.
Registration from the Bast Side has not
been as heavy the past week compared
with the West Side, ns it was formerty.
The West Side had 8703 voters registered
Saturday night, while the Bast Side had
11.797. The total was 22.925. Including the
20 "who live outside the city limits.
County Clerk Fields eald yesterday that
as notaries may register those voters who
live without the city limits, there is no
necessity for St. John citizens coming, to
Portland to register. Blanks are furnished
the notaries, and these are mailed by
them to the County Clerk's office, where
the names are placed in the registration
books.
Only two weeks remain in which voters
may register. All registered voters are
to receive from Secretary of State Ben
son copies of initiative petitions which
are to be voted on at the coming elec
tion, aa well as other literature of value.
Theae petitions were printed March 2,
snd will be mailed by April 7.
Next Friday, March 27, is the last
day when petitions may be filed request
ing names to be placed on the primary
election ballot for state and district of
llcts. April 1 is the last day when petitions can
he filed requesting name of candidates
for county offices to be placed on the
primary ballot.
April 17 is the last day when conven
tions or assemblies may file nominations
for state and district offices.
May 2 Is the last day when individual
electors may file such nominations. Con-
' ventlons or assemblies cannot file nomi
nations for county offices after this date.
May 16 is the last day when individual
electors may file nominations for county
offices.

spent yesterday in Portland, the guest
of William Harder, general agent for
the Great Northern Railway. Mr.
Persse is accompanied by his daughter
on his trip to the Ooat.
"Business Is getting back to normal
' with us In Winnipeg." said Mr. Persse,
"after the depression of last Winter,
and conditions are perhaps better than
we expected they would be so early In
the season. We have come out of the
financial stringency very well. There
Is a heavy movement of . immigrants
into the Canadian Northwest at this
time, and we look for a very large
movement during .the Spring and Sum
mer. "Ijast year there was an influx of
R.V00O Americans Into the provinces of
the Canadian Northwest. All were
very desirable settlers, too. for they
came mostly from the Middle . West.
' Farmere of Iowa. Illinois. Ohio and
other states of that district, are sell
ing their farms, which bring as high
as $200 an acre, and are moving into
the Canadian wheat country, where
they buy farm lands for $10 and $-0
an acre, and raise wheat.
"Northwestern Canada is a new
country, but It has a splendid future,
snd its possibilities are hardly real
ised as yet. Much of the country Is
hardly explored, but it is known that
the far Northern portions of Canada
will become a great farming country
within the next few years."

The United Brethren Church and its
pastor, Kftv. H. C. Shaffer, are not in
favor of the propoed 'S missionary
banquet at the Portland Hotel. At the
morning; service at thi church last
Sunday, Mr. Shaffer spoke of thl ban
quet and rave it as his Judgment that
it was not well advised and oug'ht not
to be held. He said among other
thin that the J00 that would he
pent at the banquet would support a
mihslonary for one year in the field.
We are complaining now because
the laboring men do not come into the
ohurche." paid Mr. Shaffer, "and yet
It ts proposed to arive an expensive
banquet In a big hotel, where the ordl
nary worklngm&n cannot a;o on ac
rount of the cost. I think it wrongr to
hold sur-h an affair.
Mr. Shaffer said yesterday that the
member .of his church generally are
opposed to the missionary banquet, for
these reasons. He said further that
he had talked with the patstors of some
of the smaller churches, and found that
they are not In favor of such a banquet
and may say so in public.
