MARINE WAR IN . BALANCE
Fate of Engineers' Strife to Be Set
tled at Today's Conference.
SAN FRANCISCO, ' March 22. It In
thought the conference between the Ma
rine Engineers' Association and the spe
cial committee of th steam schooner
owners, of this port, tomorrow, will be
the last to be held between the two or
ganizations, and that either the matter
will be settled or open warfare will be
declared between the two bodies.
At r conference held Wednesday morn
ing all minor differences between the rules
adopted by the engineers and those de
manded by the shipowners were adjusted
and the final test of strength will come
on the propostion of manning the ships.
The shipowners still insist upon their
old ultimatum that two men shall be suf
ficient in the engine-room of ships taking
long voyages, and the engineers want
three.
Several propositions have been made to
the engineers by the shipowners, but all
have been refused because the engineers
feel they cannot stand long trips with
out three men in the engine-room.
In the event of an agreement being
reached, all the steam schooners in the
lumber trade, which have been idle so
long, will at once cut to sea. In the
event that no agreement is reached, a
lone and disastrous strike might result
that would raise the price of lumber to
a higher mark than it has been on this
Coast for years.

ALLIANCE ARRIVES IN PORT
STEAMER BRIXGS BIG CARGO
FROM COOS BAY.
Vessel Sails One Day Behind Her
Schedule Freight Business
Is on Increase.
The steamship Alliance arrived up at
an early hour yesterday morning with 72
passengers and upwards of. 200 tons of
freight. The Alliance was one day be
hind her schedule but the delay was
caused by the large amount of freight
handled at Coos Bay ports. The vessel
went south with 500 toiui and came north
with 200.
Freight business between Portland and
Coos Bay ports is ' increasing daily and
every vessel which sails from Portland
carries, a larger cargo than on her
previous trip. Thia is largely due to the
conditions of the money market and the
increasing demand for staple products on
the bay. , The Alliance is due to sail this
evening..

The cost of interments has been greatly
reduced by the Holman Undertaking
Company.
Heretofore It has been the custom of
funeral directors to make charges for ail
incidentals connected with a funeral. The
Edward Holman Undertaking Company,
tho leading funeral directors or Portland,
have departed from that custom. When
casket is furnished by us we make no
extra charges for embalming, hearse to

may be required of us, except clothing,
