ITS FO
BY 11 MAN TINGLE.
NOW i the time to eat greens and
plenty of them, both raw and
cooked. If you don't like cooked
greens of the stringy, soggy, watery
variety. I don't blame you, but that Is
no reason for not eating them as sal
ads. In purees, with poached eggs or
mince, in timbales and chartreuse of
vegetables, or as "hot salads, as well
as the usual cool uncooked kind.
"Cabbage greens" or "cabbage sprouts'
have made their appearance during the
past week; kale Is sttll with us; chic
ory, or rather endive, la still good, and
there is plenty of spinach, field lettuce,
watercress and dandelion. Asparagus
is a little- cheaper, costing 35 to 40
cents a pound.
Mexican tomatoes are more plentiful
and lower In price at 25 cents a pound.
There are very nice-looking large bell
peppers, too. I saw one woman, evi
dently not well up on "times and sea
sons," who nearly fainted when told
their price: "My goodness." she said,
"three for 2f cents! "Whatever hind
are they and where do they come from?
1 thought they'd be about 5 cents a
pound. That's what I paid last time I
bought peppers."
The big. black radishes are in now,
and cost 16 cents a bunch. There are new
Itcrmuda potatoes at JSO cents and new
alifornia carrots, three bunches for 25
cents. Kgg plant Is 30 cents a pound
nnd hothouse cucumbers are 25 cents
each. Brussels sprouts are plentiful, but
not so Inviting aa they have been. Celery
and artichokes are still very good and I
saw some particularly nice-looking oys
ter plant.
Are you acquainted with that oM-fash-Joned
dainty rhubarb fool? 1 hope there

Is a very good dish, all the same, and
rhubarb is pretty good now and costs'
15 cents a pound.
There are plenty of alligator pears at
40 cents each and pineapples at 69 and
75 cents: with oranges, grape-fruit and
apples, as usual.
Live terrapin, at least they said It
was terrapin, though I was not perfectly
sure, are to be had at 75 rents and Jl
each. Frog legs are good just now and
cost 40 cents a dozen. I saw some fine
-black bass at 36 cents a pound and sea
trout at 25 cents. There is a limited
supply of California shad at 15 cents and
sturgeon at 20 cents. Catfish was 20
cents, instead of 16. as it has been lately,
and Chinook salmon was the same price.
Other available fish were sole, halibut
and California smelt at 15 cents, reu
snapper, rock cod and black cod at 12H
cents, and perch and herring at 10
cents. Columbia River smelt were very
plentiful and cost only 6 cents a pound.
Poultry prices are the same as last week,
e-xcept that hens Rre about 20 cents in
stead of 35, as they were. 1 nere were
some fine capons at 2.1 cents a pound, and
Rood broilers of about Ihi pounds at 75
cents each.
