VBANKER SAVED BY CUNNING
Xmrcs Desperate -Man With Nitro
locrinc Into infectives Hands.
OMAHA, Neb., March 10 At 10 o'clock
this morning an unknown man entered
the Merchants' National Rank of this city
and demanded a largo sum of money, at
the same time displaying a bottle, believed
to contain nit ro-glycerine, and threatening
to blow up tho bank if his request was
not complied with.
The man entered the bank soon atfter
the doors were thrown open and asked
to see Vtcc-Fresidviit Luther Drake in his
private office. Mr. Drake scaled himself
opposite the man. who began talking in
a rambling manner about having had
$50it0 in the National Bank of Commerce
in Kansas City when that bank failed.
"And since all you fellows are in to
gether, you had just better hand me over
my money, or I'll blow you and this
bank and all of us to hell." suddenly said
the follow, producing a three-ounce bottle
containing a thick yellow liquid.
"iMn't you make a move. This is filled
w ith nitro-fcjlycerino. It you move, you
ar a dead man.'"
"You don't want to die yourself, do
you." coolly akcd Dra-kc.
"Oh, yes; I came in here ready to die."
responded the stranger, "but when I die,
I'll take everybody m. this bu it dins: with
me."
"Well, I'll go and gel you the money,"
said Drake, rising from his chair.
"Sit down. If you get up nain without
permission. I'll just drop this bottle. You
know what will happen."
Drake sat down. Drake then told the
man he would talk it over with him
and the stranger accepted, all the time
keeping the hottlw in his hand within
sitfht. Noticing that the man's lace
was pinched. Drake asked him if he
whs not hungry.
"1 have been studying over this mat-'
ter for several days, and have not
eaten anything for 48 hours,' answered
the man with the bottle.
"Well, lets ko have breakfast and
talk this over." proposed Drake.
"All rifcht, but don't try any mon
key business, or you are a dead man."
replied the man.
President Hamilton, of the bank, en
tered the next room during the conver
sation and heard enough of it to en
able him to know what was going on.
As Drake and the stranger left the
room together. Hamilton telephoned
the police station for plainclothes men
and followed the two men to a near-by !
restaurant. I
Drake and the man were on opposite 1
aides of a table when three detectives !
accompanied M" President Hamilton en- '
tered the room. ' i

detectives pinioned his arms and-re-lieved
him ot his bottle before he knew
what was up.
At the police station later the man
gave his name as L. L Fee and said
that he came from Rockford, 111., last
October. He insists that the bottle con
tained no nitro-glycerine, but was only
water with, a coloring matter in it. The
police took the bottle to the river bank
and fired into It with a rifle. The bottle
was broken but there was no explosion.
The police believe Fee is insane.
Fire Drill in Schools.
PORTLAND, March 10. (To the Edi
tor.) Before the subject pets cool, let me
say one word about the fire drill in our
public schools. Don't have them regular
ly; on the contrary, sound the gong when
it Is least expected. Twice a week is not
too often, but never at the some hour.
Once a day is still better. The three or
four minutes thus consumed is not
wasted. Filling a child's lungs with pure
air enables It the easier to get through
the day's duties. Is It too much to hope
that these frequent drills will. In case of
real danger, make nn orderly exit merely
a mechanical operation?

WEATHER CONDITIONS.
During the last 24 hours there has been a
peneral fall in pressure over the North Pa
cific states and a low-presaur area of con
siderable Importance is central over British
Columbia. Tt has caused increased cloudiness
in this district and rain in Western Wash
ington and along the North Oregon coast.
It is much cooler In the Sound country, but
elsewhere on the Pariflc Slope the tempera
tures have remained nearly stationary.
The indications are that the rain area
will spread during the next 24 hours to in
clude all of Western Orecon, Washington
and Northern Idaho, and that fair weather
will continue In Eastern Orepon and South
ern Idaho. The falling rain will caus
lower tenrperatures in Western Oregon, hut
In the remainder of the district the changes
in temperature will be unimportant.

THE DOCTOR'S GIFT
Food Worth Its AVelcht In Hold.
We usually expect the doctor to put
us on some kind of penance and pivc
us bitter medicines.
A Penn. doctor brought a patient
something entirely different and the re
suits are truly interesting.'
"Two years ago,' writes this patient,
"I was a frequent victim of acute indi
gestion and biliousness, being- allowed
to eat very few things. One day our
family doctor brought me a small
package saying he had found some
thing for me to eat, at last.
"Ho said it was a food called Grape
Nuts and even as its jrolden color might
suggest, it was worth its weight in
gold. I was sick and tired, trying one
thing- after another to no avail, but at
last consented to try this new food.
"Well! It surpassed my doctor's
fondest anticipation and every day
since then I have blessed the good doc
tor and the inventor of Grape-Nuts.
T noticed improvement at once and
in a month's time my former spells of
indigestion had disappeared. In two
months I felt like a new man. My
brain was much clearer and keener, my
body took on the vitality of youth, and
this condition has continued."
