NO SALE FOR BARK
Cascara Sagrada Trade Re
ceives a Jolt.
OUTLOOK FAR FROM GOOD
Failure of Big New York Drug Firm
Is Likely to Throw Large
Quantity of This Article
on the Market.
The otitioou for th casrara hartc market
la not rod. Trat tia ben nearly stag
nant for several months, with prices tend
inis downward, and the Indication are that
tha situation will be even worse in the
future, owing to the failure of one of the
largest' handlers of this commodity In the
world.
The Mailman Fulton Company, a
wholesale drug firm of New York, with
brnnrh,! In Chicago and London, assigned
Tmi days ago. . The failure was precipitated
by the sudden death of Mr. Htallman. Im
mediately following the failure, cables an
nounced that. London brokers had offered
Jin tons of bark on the London market at
SO, eoulvalent to 5 cents a pound here.
This lot was believed to be a part of the
holdings of the Stallman & Fulton Com
pany, and the fear was expressed that the
receiver fnr the company might force on
the American market the New York hold
ings of the firm, which are supposed to be
large. Such action would absolutely swamp
a market already demoralized.
t'ascara bark was one of the first com
modities to feel the effect of the trade
depression In the East. The market, how
ever, had not been active for several years,
though a number of times speculators
thouKht the demand was on. the point of
revl Ing. Statistics In this connection,
however, proved misleading, for the manu
facturers .succeeded in getting along with
out what ! was" thought to be their annual
requirements. it may be they found a
cheaper substitute, but It in more than
likely that the trade has overestimated the
demand.
Some 4V tons of bark of various ages
are held on the Coast by dealers and spec
ulators and the - supply bids fair to be
further increased thia year. Advices from
different points In the cascara sagrada
section are that preparations are being
made to peel a larger quantity than was
brought out lant year, owing to the fact
that labor Is more plentiful, but It will,
without doubt, prove an unprofitable har
vest for the peelers.

OREGON POTATOES IN THE EAST.
Pom Shipments friild to Hnve Reached
Minneapolis Market.
The latest issue of the Chicago TaVker
contain? a dispatch from Minneapolis to
the effect that hlpments of Oregon po
tatoes have. Invaded that market and are
bring sold at a profit, owing to the high
prices quoted on Minnesota stock. Noth
ing Is known here of any shipments from
Oregon to Minnesota, and It Is presumed
the story refers to some small lots shipped
from Eastern Oregon, probably on con
signment. With the prevailing freight rate
it la Impossible to ship valley potatoes so
far east and make a profit.
The onion market continues quiet, but
firm. Some business at $2.40 was reported
yesterday. A number of cars have been
shipped South In tne last few days, but
they were onions purchased previously.
Prices are well maintained at Pan Fran
cisco, but the northern markets have suf
ficient stock to last until Bermudas arrive.
STRONGER DEMAND FOR OATS IN EAST.
Tea Thousand Tons Sold In Eastern Wash
ington for shipment.
The wheat market was firm yesterday at
the previous day's prices. Business was not
on an active scale because of the unwilling
ness of farmers to part with their holdings..
A ftrmer feeling prevails in the oats mar
ket as a result of the Eastern demand. It
Is reported that 10.000 tone of Eastern
Washington oats have been sold for ship
ment to the East. This materially cuts
down the supply In that section and has
caused an advance in quotations here,
though the local feed demand shows no
improvement. The California Inquiry Is ale
unsatisfactory. 1 barley market con
tinues quint.
Strong Demand for INmltry.
Receipts of poultry were more Hberal
than usual yesterday, but the supply was
not sufficient for requirements and the
market held very firm.
Eggs werequoted steady, wlih most sales
around IS cents. A good northern demand
prevents local stocks from accumulating.
The butter market was steady and un
changed. Bank Cleekring.

Stock Prices Will Not Go Up or
Down. , '
DEMAND IS PARALYZED
Nor Is There any Selling Pressure
In the Market Trading in
the Hands of a Few
Professionals.
NEW YORK. March 4. The small circle
of professional traders whose operations
now make up the score of daily transac
tions in the stock market struggled in vain
today to effect any considerable movement.
They were hard pu?hed to And arguments
as a 'normal explanation of their operations.
The day was praottcajly barren of price
movements or news of any interest. Not
withstanding the almost total paralysis of
the demand for securities, the bear traders
find no important offerings coming out to
afford them opuortunlty to cover short con
tracts. Evidence of revival of Industry and re
cuperation of business was not regarded as
clear enough to warrant operations today.
The reduction of the dividend on Calumet
Hecla stock and on a minor copper com
pany naa a dlt-couracing effect on holders
of the 'copper industrials. Another reduc
tion in the price of copper in Iondon today
was another factor tn the same direction.
The selling of Union Pacific was under sus
picion of coming from 'a well-informed
source, and the traders were encouraged to
Join in the selling, only to And the stock
In scarce supply when they attemnted to
cover. There was continued discTMision of
the amount of unfriendly criticism and
hostile measures directed against the finan
cial centers and the speculative markets,
and there was a disposition to ascribe to
this much of the profound dullness which
has now overtaken the stock market.
Opinions are divided over the probable
action of the Bank of England governors
on the official discount rate tomorrow.
The present increase In money-market sup
plies In London Is complicated with the
question of needed protection against a
demand from Berlin to help In meeting
the pressure on supplies on that market.
The scarcitv of stocks was the basis for
a turn against the shorts which caused a
brisk rise later in the day. when Great
Northern ore certificates developed pro
nounced strength. Thls,movment also dted
out again into dullness and hesitation be
fore the market closed.
