SLAUGHTERED BY SCORES
Green wich Dotk Kmployes Hold
Rat-Killing Contest.
Narlv l'0 rats have pone to join their
forefathers in hads through the in
genious if somewhat inhuman method of
destruction and entertainment adopted at
lireenwifh dock No. 1. After entrapping
a hunsTy swarm of bitf. pa tint rats, the
Employes of the dork built a plank en
doKure for their rodent captives and
cast two ppry rat terriers Into the arena.
The combat that followed was a gory
one. The dos did not stop their relent
less task until every rat was dead..
But a score of the bigger rats died
Frame, fighting the dogs when cornered
and Inflicting not a few painful wounds.
The pests were captured by a clever
plan in a dark corner of the dock. Fore
man 'Frank Kandall secured a huge cask.
hinged a thin board filled with small
holes across the head and partly rilled the
cask with grain. Rats invaded the cask
in droves and c!no to 100 were on the
in.-ide when the barrel was sot on end
The rats were then given over to trie
terriers.
