BUILD RESORT AT
M0FFITTSPHNG5
Johnson Porter Plans to Spend
$250,000 on Famous
; ' ' Watering Place.
WILL ERECT LARGE HOTEL
Site on North Bank Line Opposite
Cascade Locks Will Be Beautified
and Greatly Improved by New
Purchaser During Summer.
J.hnson rorter, of the contracting firm
of Porter Bros. & Welch, which built a
large part of the Spokane, Portland A
Seattle Railway, haa bought Moffatt
Spring, on the Washington bank of the
Columbia, near Cascade Locks, and will
make a big resort of the property. The
price paid is not made public but the
deal has just- been closed.
Mr. Porter expects to spend 1250,000 at
Moffatt Springs during the coming year
in improvements. He will erect a large
and modern hotel for the accommodation
of gueats and will build a new and im
proved bathhouse on the property that
will accommodate a large number of
bathers. The waters of the springs,
which are hot, have long been noted for
their medicinal qualities and the baths
will be arranged ao that patients may
have the fullest benefit from the water.
In the center of the building there will
be a big pool, while -those who desire
may take tub or shower baths as well.
The ground at the springs will be beau
tified and the warm water from the
spring, will be used in irrigating the
grounds. Th cold weather plants and
shrubs will be kept green, it is believed,
by the warm water and hothouses are
planned which will grow flowers during
the Winter with no other heat than
streams of the water from the springs.
The opening of the North Bank road
from Vancouver to Pnco, which is
planned for March 16, will afford easy
accesa to the resort and it Is the plan
of Mr. Porter to make the place a popular
on for pleasure seekers at all seasons of
the year aa well as a convenient place for
Invalids to gather from all parta of the
Pacific Northwest to use the waters
medicinally.
Mr. Porter's firm of contractors has
ita headquarters In St. Paul but has been
engaged for the past two years In the
construction of the North Bank road.
The firm haa been Identified with the Hill
railroad projects for some time. Tem
porary offices are established at Van
couver. It was while engaged in the con
struction of the new Hill line that Air.
Porter became interested In the property
he has Just acquired. He expects to make
It one of the principal health resorts of
the Pacific Northwest.
