INKEN NEPHEW
Jchn Donahue Fatally Wounds
Ed- Sweeney, Jefferson
Street Docksweeper.
ASSASSIN FLEES, IS CAUGHT
Either Out of Ills Mind or P'eigns
Insanity, and Babbles About Ills
Crime in Meaningless Way.
Shooting Was Unprovoked.
Ed Sweeney, docksweeper, 65 years
old, 'was shot and fatally wounded
early yesterday afternoon by his
nephew, John Donahue. The tragedy
occurred on the dock adjoining the
Jefferson street railroad depot. It was
deliberate and unprovoked, so far as
an eyewitness could determine.
Donahue either fired the shot to end
some grrlevance, or did the act while
suffering: from a sudden attack of In
sanity. When he was captured he
talked and muttered In a meaningless
way. and was either out,, of his mind
or pretending to be.
Sweeney was hit twice. One ball
penetrated the fore part of his head.
Another pierced his left arm. He was
unconscious when picked up, and could
make no statement. He told acquaint
ances lately that Donahue was con
tinually bothering him for money and
threatening him for making occasional
refusals. Sweeney brought the nephew
here from Ireland three years ago, pay
Ins his passage. He hna been support
ing the follow most of the time since.
Sweeney was at work sweeping the dock
shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday, when
Donahue camo up. The uncle greeted his
nephew pleasantly, saying, "Hello, John!"
Murderer Fires Three Shots.
"Who are you, anyway?" Donahue
f xclaimed, with a flourish- of oaths,
lie then drew out a cheap little re
volver of 32-callber and began shoot
ing:. He fired three . times, and when
his victim fell the fellow took to his
heele, running south.'
The shooting was witnessed by John
Smith, section foreman. The police
were notified a few minutes before 2
o'clock, and Inside of hair an hour Cap
tain Bruin and Detective- Price had
overtaken the- fugitive and arrested
him. They found him In the Exchange
saloon on Macadam road, a mile or
more from the scene of the shooting.
Donahue had refilled, the empty
chambers of his weapon, but the of
ficers surprised him as he stood In
front of the bar drinking, and he had
no chance to shoot. After tracking
the fugitive past the' Zimmerman
slaughtering plant, the officers learned
he had gone south on the Macadam
road. Patrolman Anderson got a horse
and went at a gallop down the road,
while Captain Bruin and Detective
Price followed on foot. Coming to the
Exchange saloon, they learned the felT
lpw was inside.
Going Into the place, the detective
walked "quietly up to Donahue, who did
not know' him, and seized him. 'He
tried to fight, but made a weak show
ing. They disarmed him arid took him
to the City Jail.
Donahue Babbles About Crime.
Donahue' was a sorry sight when
seen later in the day for his version of
the shooting. He is an undersized and
homely fellow, with coarse features,
red hair and mustache and a thick
brogue. His eyes were badly swollen
from drunkenness.
He spoke Intelligently as to his
name and age, saying he was John
Donahue, 31 years old. He said he came
to America three years ago and that
Sweeney paid his fare.
"Why did you shoot your uncle?" he
was asked.
"Uncle! He wasn't no uncle of mine
he was the devil. That was it," Dona
hue said, rather wildly.
The fellow lurched against the bars
of his cell, straightened himself up and
broke forth into a crazy babble.
"My- uncle, Sweeney, he was a god.
But he's not of this world any more. I
thought he was a god, but he was a
devil. God eald to do it. I'm as Inno
cent as a babe. Yes, sir. He was a
devil. He killed a man in Ireland. It
was a man named Conners, and he had
to get away from there."
Donahue began fairly shouting as
he went on with this babble. Finally,
he foil against the cot and dozed. Ha
was either crazy, suffering from a pro
longed drinking bout or was simulat
ing an irresponsible condition.
The victim was taken to the' St. "Vin
cent's Hospital in the patrol wagon
immediately after the sh'ootlng. The
doctors heM out no hope for him, say
ing death appeared only a matter of
time.
NO DEALS, SAYS GEER
Juet as Friendly to Fulton as to
Bourn Hopes for Aid. .
rENDLETON, Feb. 3. (To the Editor.)
T'p In this neck o' tho woods people are not
In "close touch" with, oolltlcal affairs in
the metropolis and far that reason the local
analysis of conditions and probabilities, not
to say underlying causes, of certain things
fald to be doing In matters political, con
tained in The Oregonian of Monday. Is the
subject of much amusement hereabouts.
Amontr othrr thincs. It is said "they say
that Bourne's infhtenco was one of the
things that brought forth T. T. Gear to
fi.cht Kills for the Republican nomination
for Conpross In tho Second District." that
"some KUU men" go so far as to say that
Ceer would not have become a candidate
but for Bourne's persuasion." that "If Geer
should be elected he will ally, himself with
Bourne." that "when Kills visited OiKMgon
b is said to have saiisMed himself that
Geer's randidncy wns largely inspired by
Bourn." and that "undoubtedly this report
will bo. denied by tho Goer men. but It Is
having Its effort in political circles, for It
seems to have the marks of credibility."
Of course, it is always somewhat neces
ssry to go awHy from home to got the news,
but. notwithstanding, one should be ready
to hear almost any absurd and untruthful
thing where political mattors are concerned,
It does seem necessary J should say that
there Is not one word or act of mine that
will Justify a sinclo Inference in all these
BtHtments.
Will those at all interested do me the
justice to bchevo me when I say that I
-have never received one word from Mi-.
Pourne on the subject of my candidacy, por
a word from any man even remotely con
nected with his political aspirations or .pur
poses, and that he has never confided In ma
so much- as one word as to what he intends
to do, what ho wishes to do or how he ex
' peers to succeed in any of hla ambitions,
if he has any.
I shall hope to have his support in tho
coming campaign, and have a similar hope
for Senator .Fulton's support, and have pre
cisely a much assurance of one as of the
other. I have made no alliance with either
nr wrth the -friends of either. I entered the
campaign at the solicitation of many peo
ple in both Kastern and Western Oregon,
without the slightest thought of whether
they they were Fulton or Bourne meq, only
Intending to present my claims to the peo-
f
pie as a Republican without any prefix of
any character.
I wish to say again that I am as friendly
to Senator Fulton as to Senator Bourne, to
them both as to either; that I shall hav
nothing to do with any factional fight in ths
Republican party; that I desire to go to Con
gress for the work that may be done there
aside from the petty matters of bestowing
patronage, and that if elected I shall ally
myself with the other members of the- Ore
gon delegation .in whatever thins; may seem
beat for the people.
Let me assure you that there has been
no bargain, agreement, trade or understand
ing of any character between any member
of the Oregon delegation and myself or with
any of their special friends concerning any
feature of the opening campaign or as to
its results.
And if anybody knows of a circumstance
which will in any way show such agree
ment, the best way to get it before the pub
lic Is to send It to The Oregonlan for pub
lication, signed by the. name of the man
who poFsessee the Information.
Isn't it possible for us to be Just plain
Republicans again, without misre presenta
tion or imputation of false motives or de
signs? T. T. GSER.

THIS Is the worry season for the base
ball magnates, the season when con
tracts come back with demands for In
creased salaries. Pretty soon It will be
the anxious season, for then tho moguls
will be on the rack, each fearing that he
has a tall-end team.
Billy Nolan may have grown rich bor
rowing money from Battling Nelson, but
there was one thing sure, while Nolan
handled the Battler- he wasn't being
whipped by second-raters.
Should such a thing corns to pass that
Heney and Fulton be matched for a
catch-as-catch-can verbal battle, ringside
seats will be worth $20 per. It would be
the best betting battle ever fought in
Portland.
So Dan Kelly Is going to remain in the
East. Now the question is which dyed-in-the-wool
amateur organization Is going
to get the Oregon sprinter on the pay
roll? The Portland Hunt Club will hold a
closed paper chase on Saturday. The
start will be from the gas tank In Upper
Albina and the trail will be laid by Miss
Monroe and Mr. Albee.
Now that Unholz has beaten Memsic
and Nelson, he will be looking over the
horizon for a Smoke rising over the city
of Baltimore? Joe certainly slipped us a
wheeze when he gave the lightweight
title to Memsic.
