SEATTLE. Wash.. Dec. 31. Deal mutes
from all over Puget Bound gathered In
Seattle tonight for the first annual ball of
the Association of the Deaf, and they

FOR SALE REAL ESTATE.
THE North Bank Road, now open, brings
in dose touch with the outside the most
marvelous fruit section In this entire
Northwest. The sunny slopes along the
north bank of the Columbia, just east of
the Cascade Mountains, have long been
known as producing the first fruits of the
. season, away ahead of any locality north
of California.
Heretofore no successful means of
transportation could be had, consequently
not much interest has been given to the
fruit Industry.
A few "faithful ones,' however, have
continued enthusiastic over the future
possibilities of the section and have not
been negligent in planting and caring fr
their orchards, especially of the kinds
for which there Is such a great demand.
These orchards today are living witnesses
of what enormous crops will grow on
such small tracts of ground.
The finest peaches, apricots, grapes,
apples and other tree fruits grown here
have no superior on the Pacific Coa-st,
while English walnuts and almonds ma
ture to the height of perfection. Corn
and melons are as easily raised as pota
toes In the Willamette Valley.
A few miles east of Columbus, about 30
miles east of The Dalles, and a little
below Dr. Blalock's large orchard on
Blalock .Island, Is a body of about 80oo
acres, some 700 feet above the river, which
Is the choicest of the land. A good por
tion of thla la now under bond by men
closely allied with the North Bank Rail
road interests.
These representatives have not been slow
in getting control of every entire tract
that could be secured. The whole will be
platted and sold In B to 10-a.cre tracts,
and more than this, they will plant these
and care for them for the purchaser If
they are not now In position to go onto
the property. The lands are all in a high
state of cultivation and the remarkable
feature here Is that no irrigation is re
quired, more than that is carried in the
gravel beds lying 20 to 30 feet below the
surface of the soil. By surface cultiva
tion the moisture rises by capillary at
traction, and no injury to crops from
lack of moisture is ever manifest. It Is
safe to say this special feature of natural
sub-Irrigation found here, is exceptional,
to say the least, especially where the cli
mate Is favored with almost continual
sunshine.
The flrst 25 purchasers will be favored
with low prices, considering the actual
values of the lands to orchard a For
further information call on the Portland
agents,
