i 10 THE MORNING OREGOXIAX, MONDAY, DECE3IBER 23, 1907. CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR CITY'S POOR Inmates of All Benevolent In stitutions Will Be Re membered. GIFTS AND GOOD DINNERS Charitable Citizens Plan to Make Festival Memorable to Unfortun ate Christmas Trees for All the Homeless Little Folk. With granaries and storehouses filled to the rafters with the products of a record-breaking harvest, the people of Oregon are prepared to dispense Christ mas cheer freely among those to whom fortune has been less kind. In Portland plans are being completed tor a cele bration of the anniversary this year sur passing all previous efforts. The volume of the holiday trade indicates a bount eous Christmas for those who have been accustomed to a liberal interchange of gifts, but the spirit of giving is in the air, and few will be overlooked. At all the public and charitable institutions in this city, dinner with all the" substantial delicacies of the season, will be served and the services of Santa Claus and his corps of assistants will be required to officiate at numerous trees from which gifts will be distributed. The inmates of these different institutions will all be remembered. At the Baby Home several of the 27 little waifs will receive their first intro duction to Santa Claus, while perhaps the last Christmas of several of the 200 old people at the homes for the aged will be made a pleasant memory by good dinners and the distribution of small gifts. Neither will the day pass unobserved at the County Poor Farm, where the county's ISO dependents will be reminded of the time when they participated more actively in the festival. Salvation Army's Plans. The Salvation Army, following its an nual custom, will serve dinner for about 2000 of the city's poor who might other wise be forgotten. At the hospitals the day will be observed in the usual manner with exercises and Christmas trees for the entertainment of the Juvenile patients. At the Baby Home. Ellsworth and Thirty-sixth streets. Christmas exercises will be held Tuesday night in the play room. Gifts will be distributed by Santa Claus and the festivities will be con tinued Wednesday. At this home there are 2i wards, ranging from a few months to three years of age. Mrs. A. Ella S. Stearns, matron of the Children's Home at 88" Corbett, reports that the 49 children of that institution Wl be cared for as usual this year. The .elaborate Christmas dinner will not be served until next Sunday. Christmas day a plain dinner will be given at the home and an open house will be kept from 2 to 5 o'clock that afternoon, when the parents of the little ones and their friends will be received. At that time Santa Claus will officiate at the tree from which candies, nuts and toys will be distributed among the little ones. An interesting feature of the exercises will be a "Christmas pie," being a collection of gifts In a large receptacle. There will be a gift for each child who will draw his prize by means of a string to which the toy will be attached. The young people of the White Temple will have charge of the Christmas exer cises at the Home of Boys' and Girls' Aid Society. The program, consisting of recitations and songs by the children, will be held Friday night. Following tho exercises Santa Claus will arrive and distribute from a tree gifts, donated by friends of the institution for the, boys and girls. Wednesday a roast chicken dinner, for which the fowls have been donated will be served. There are 60 children in charge of this society. Dinner for Old People. A Christmas dinner will be served the 46 inmates of the Patton Home for the Aged. 975 Michigan Avenue, at 2 o'clock Christmas Day. At night the Inmates of the home will be entertained with an Informal program that will include phonograph selections. Arrangements for Christmas at the Florence Crittenton Refuge Home. East Thirty-first and East Glisan, are being made by the Young Woman's Christian Association, whose members will give a musical entertainment in connection with the tree Christmas night. The 18 young w.omen who are being cared for at the home will be Joined for dinner on Christ mas by a number of other young women who have been assisted by the organiza tion and are making their homes In this city. Mrs. A. L. Rix. matron of the home, reports that donations for the home will be gratefully accepted. The management of the home has arranged for an afternoon tea to be held Friday for the double purpose of acquainting visitors with the work being accom plished at the home and giving them a chance to assist. Thankful for the liberal donations of friends, the management of the Home for the Aged. Mt. St. Joseph, will serve a turkey dinner to the 100 men and women who are being given the comforts of a home under the direction of the Sisters of Mercy. Although unsuccessful In the battle of life, the ISO charges of the county at the Poor Farm will this year enjoy Christmas thoroughly.. Generous dona tions have been made by the business men of Portland for this Institution, through the efforts of Mrs. Helen Ladd Corbett. who with others Interested her self in providing for these unfortunates a truly Merry Christmas. A turkey dinner will be served Christmas Day ana In the afternoon each of the inmates of the farm will receive a gift, provided by Superintendent Jackson. In the absence of the fur-clad benefactor who was ex pected would distribute the gifts. SuDr Isitendcnt Jackson has arranged for a drawing of prizes by which each will re ceive something useful. Flower Mission's Work. Small gifts will be distributed from a tree Tuesday afternoon by the Flower Mission Day Nursery at 13 Fifth street. North, to the day nursery children. Christmas ' Day young women who are connected with the work of the Mission will deliver to each inmate of the differ ent Homes for the Aged a basket of as sorted fruit, accompanied by a Christmas message of good cheer. Several of the members of the Mission assembled at the rooms on Fifth street yesterday and ar ranged the basketa for Wednesday's de livery. Members of the I. O. O. F. Aside from these exercises tho usual turkey dinner will be served Wed nesday. There are very few children at St. Vin cent's Hospital this Christmas, so there will bo no Christmas tree. There will, however, bea Christmas dinner for con valescents. Flowers, fruit and delicacies will be provided for other patients. In former years musicians and readers have furnished entertainment for the patients, and this will probably be the case this year. Will Distribute Baskets. The Salvation .Army is making exten-, sive preparations for its Christmas for the poor of the city. Major Joseph Faulkner, divisional officer, in charge of the arrangements, said yesterday that 2000 people will be fed. Instead of the usual Christmas dinner, it is proposed this year to distribute baskets of un cooked food' to at least 250 families. Where families contain more than six members extra food will be furnished. These baskets will be distributed from the Salvation- Army headquarters on Davis street tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. They will each contain a four pound chicken, a five-pound roast, bread, cereals, prunes, flour, sugar, coffee, but ter, potatoes, canned corn, canned to matoes, and fruit. Bach basket repre sents a cost of between $3 and $4. It is fully expected that by tomorrow night the fund for these baskets will have been collected. Christmas night there will be Christ mas trees at both the Davis-street and Madison-street headquarters. Captains Anderson and Halsey, in charge of the exercises at Davis street, are preparing to care for 75 poor children, in addition to the members of the Sunday school. Toys, fruit and candy will be given to each child. Clothing and shoes will also be furnished to the needy ones. Similar arrangements are being made by Adju tant Dean at the Madison-street head quarters. s At the Rescue Home. To those holding tickets and able to call at No. 3, North Fourth street, these baskets will be delivered between 6 and 7 o'clock Tuesday night and between 8:S0 and 10 o'clock Wednesday forenoon. The Christ mas tree for the children will be in the Volunteers' Hall at 3:30 o'clock Wednes day afternoon with a special Christmas service that night. At the House of the Good Shepherd the usual mass will be held Christmas morn ing. Dinner will be served at noon. Pre ceding the distribution of gifts from the Christmas tree in the afternoon, a pro gramme, consisting of songs and recita tions, will be given. The inmates of the Mercy Home will have a Christmas dinner Wednesday afternoon. There are at the present time 34 inmates of the institution, but many of these will go to their homes for the holidays.
