New York Aldermen Re-elect
Him President.
OPENLY DEFY GOVERNOR
Official Removed for Keglect of
Duty Finds Tammany Loyal to
Him McClellan Rules
Election Illegal.
NEW YORK. Dec. 19. John F.
Ahearn, Democrat, who. several days
ago was relieved of the presidency of
Brooklyn Borough. by Governor
Hughes, today was elected by the
Board of Aldermen to succeed him
self. He received 24 votes against 12
for Max F. Grifenhagen, Republican.
Mr. Ahearn's supporters included all
the Democratic members in this bor
ough and in addition he received the
votes of three Republican and four
Municipal Ownership League alder
men. t
The galleries of the aldermanic cham
ber were crowded with spectators, and
the result of the balloting" and the ad
ministration of the oath of office to
Mr. Ahearn, which immediately fol
lowed, were greeted with tumultuous
cheers.
Mr. Ahearn's removal by the Governor
followed an investigation into the af
fairs of the office, which was made at
hi own request after charges had
been preferred by two officers of the
City Club. The Governor, in passing
upon the evidence, held that the charges
had been fully sustained, but in his
communication directing Mr. Ahearn's
removal from office' he said that noth
ing had been disclosed which in any
way tended to impeach Mr. Ahearn's
personal honesty.
In calling the meeting to order, Mayor
McClellan read his message, in which
he ruled that the election of Mr.
Ahearn to succeed himself would be out
of order, as nullification of the Gov
ernor's removal. He said, however, in
view of the seriousness of -the cast he
would permit an appeal to be made
from his ruling. It was taken, and
the ruling was voted down. 21 to 13.
Mr. Ahearn was then regularly nomi
nated and -triumphantly elected. Only
one, ballot was required to settle the
Issue.
John F. Ahearn has been a prominent
Tammany district leader for many
years.

private carriages, all , with eyes fixed
on the great bronzed doors, which were
the portals to the promised spectacle.
Those extraneous to1 the ceremony
gathered in special places inside the
Vatican, while the cardinals, prelates
and "court" personages, assembled in
another hall to await the pontiff.
At one end of the Sala Rcgia stood
the papal throne,' flanked by the cardi

for the' bishops; opposite were special
tribunes for the aristocracy and diplo

The procession was headed by tile Swiss
Guards. The Popo waa dressed in com

with raised tand in the familiar position
he gave blessing as he went. Following
came a long train of personages, together
with the Sistine choir, which sang as the
procession proceeded. The Pope mount

the cardinals going to their stalls and the
others taking their positions prepared for
them. The new cardinals were then in
troduced, and as they knelt one by one
at the pontiff's feet, he repeated the
formula "accipe galerum rubrum," and a
master of ceremonies held a red hat over
their heads. They then, separately after
the papal embrace, went to each of the
cardinals and received a fraternal salute.
The ceremony over. Pope Pius rose, and,
after bestowing the apostolic blessing,
slowly withdrew, the procession forming
as an escort.
After having returned thanks before the
altar of the Sistine Chapel, the new car

consistory, where the Pope held a short
supplementary consistory.
