PLUCKY PASSEXGER PREVENTS
HOLD-UP OF CAR.

As car No. 30 on the Mount Scott divi
sion of the Portland Railway. Light &
Power Company's system, was leaving the
end of the line preparatory to returning
to town on the last trip about 11:50
o'clock last night. H was boarded by three
highwaymen who evidently Intended to
rob the car crew.
That their efforts went for naught was
due to the coolness and presence of mind
of a male passenger, who happened .to be
armed with a revolver and opened fire on
the trio before they had lime to cover the
conductor with their guns.
Full particulars of the affair were unob
tainable for the reason that the car, im
mediately on its arrival at the terminal
at First and Alder street, pulled out for
the carbarns, and the crew failed to re
port the affair to the dispatcher. One
of the robbers, according to the meager
description given by the conductor to an
other employe of the company, was a
large man, weighing over 200 pounds,
while his companions were much lighter
and all wore black masks. One of the
smaller men wore a light suit, but aside
from that no other description was
learned last night. After they returned
the car to the barns at Mllwaukie, the
crew departed for home without giving
any of the details to the night force at
the terminals.
The gritty passenger who frightened the
thugs away fired three shots, but as far
as known none took effect. The name of
this passenger was not learned.

Liner Breaka Her Propeller.
NEW YORK, Dec 9.-A message to
the New Tork offices of the Red Star
Line, forwarded by the v steamship;
Kron Prinz Wilhelm. from Plymouth,
stated the Kroonland notified her by
wireless that she had broken one
of her twin propellers when 442 miles
out from Antwerp, bound to New York,
The vessel was six miles from the Scilly
Islands and was proceeding to Liver
pool with one propeller. She carries 45
cabin, 225 second cabin and 650 steerage
passengers, who will be transferred to the
Majestic. .
Must Not Adulterate Paint.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 9. A JJorth Da
kota law prohibiting the adulteration of
white lead and mixed paints was upheld
by the Supreme Court of the United
States today. A number of paint manu
facturers throughout the country brought
a suit 1 questioning the validity of the
law.
