BAILEY GATZERT IX TROUBLE
Btenmer Lands on Washougal Reef
and Is Damaged.
The steamer Bailey Gatzert, Captain
Sherman, of the Regulator line, went
on the washougal reef yesterday morn
ing and punched a hole In her port
side amidships. Only one compartment
filled and the steamer was safely
beached a short distance above. She
had 200 passengers on board. The
cabin passengers were brought back
to Portland on the steamer Dalles City
and the deck passengers were taken to
Vancouver.
Below Washougal there is a reef of
rocks and outside an eddy. There was
a strong wind blowing at the time
and the pilot miscalculated and got in
too close. 1 The steamer Weown was
sent to the aid of the Bailey Gatzert
and at daylight this morning the in
Jured steamer will proceed to the dry
dock, where repairs will be made. She
will be ready for service Monday morn
lng.
STORM SIGNALS ARE DISPLAYED
Const Stations Anticipate a Heavy
Blow Today.
Storm-warning signals were ordered
displayed yesterday from all stations
along the coast. A gale of 70 or 80
miles' velocity Is anticipated by the
weather bureau to rweep the coast by
daylight this morning.
The storm will come from the south
and east and will continue for the bet
ter part of 24 hours. Coast steam
ers and schooners will be more or less
delayed. The City of Panama, which
is scheduled to cross out this morning.
will meet the full force of the sea and
will probably have a rough voyage
south.
The Inbound fleet will be blown
along at a rapid rate and the Novem
ber arrivals will be hastened by sev
eral days. At present there are a num
ber of sailing craft fully due but the
continued northwest weather has held
them back. Southerly weather will
help In making up the time.
FREIGHT
RATES
ADVANCED
Atlantto Steamship Companies In
crease Charges 20 Per Cent.
NEW TORK, Nov. 1. Ocean freight
rates to Europe are from 10 to 20 per
cent higher, and they are likely to go still
higher before they reach their former
level, but there Is no fear of a scarcity
of room In spite of the Increased exports
to which the shippers are looking forward
this Fall.
It is reckoned by shippers that there are
Hl.OiXt.000 bushels of wheat available for
export to Europe this year. There will
also be a very heavy exportation of flour.
It Is the opinion of steamship companies
that this will be the largest factor in the
freight situation but there has also been
an increased export of copper.
Xcw Steamer Line Talked Of.
That a steamer route is likely to be
established between Portland and Port
Angeles, Wash... Is the inference con
tained In a letter from the secretary
of the Commercial Club of the latter
city to the Portland Chamber of Com
merce, in which he makes Inquiry as
to when a deputation from that city
can be received by the Chamber to dis
cuss the practicability of such a meas
ure. The fact that the merchants of
Port Angeles are desirous of establish
ing closer commercial relations with
Portland Is taken to mean that there
is a lack of harmony between the mer
chants of Port Angeles and Seattle. It
Is believed the new arrangement will
be of great benefit to the merchants
of Portland, and the Chamber Is, there
fore, arranging for a conference at an
early date on the matter.
Schooner Willie R. Unme Ashore.
SEATTLE, Wash., Nov. l.-The lumber
schooner Willie R. Hume, from San Fran

formation received here. Tugs have gone

Francisco, October 12. She Is a craft of
B89 tons net. Protection Island is a small,
rocky island In the Straits near Port
Discovery. No details of the wreck have
been received in this city, and it is not
known what the prospects are for saving
the vessel or whether any lives were lost.

Ferry Again In Commission.
The steam ferry Vancouver will go into

STRONG POINTS IN LIST
I
I
Pennsylvania In Demand and Union
Pacific Also Shows Strength.
More Engagements of Gold for
Import Are Announced.
NEW TORK. Nov. 1. The stock market
was tranquil today with a firm undertonu
and sank into a condition of seml-stagna'
tlon after various irregular but narrow fluc
tuations, being still under restriction of the
banking situation. The gradual clearing of
this situation reflects a feeling of growings
connaence in the stock market, but the fa
cilities for its expression are still hampered.
Tentative operations on margin, which have
cropped up with the easing of the call loan
rates, receive no encouragement from
bankers. Houses with interior connections
assert that there Is a good demand for
stocks from points outside of New York, but
that the execution of orders from these
sources must await the receipt or actuat
.cash shipments.
Pennsylvania was in considerable de
mand and its strength had a sustaining
effect on the whole list. The decline
September net earnings and the announce
ment of proposed retrenchment in Improve
ments did not affect its strength. Union
Pacific was another point of strength in the
marKet. A contrary lnnuence centered in
Ajnalgamated Copper, which was under
pressure in spite of further advances m tne
price of copper in the London market and
at the New York Metal Exchange.
The usual compilation of the banks' esti
mates of the weeks currency movement
was read with somewhat languid interest,
owing to doubt of the accuracy of analysis
of cross currents In the week's movements.
The banks show a movement of currency on
balance away from New York on the express
movement of $13,000,000, but the operations
of the Subtreasury have yielded to the
banks a gain of $16,103,000. Last week's
bank statement did not reflect fully tne
Government deposits made with the banks
even for last week, and these have been In
creased this week. No estimates are at
tempted of the loan changes.
Additional engagements of gold for import
were made today, but their Influence was
modified by the violent upturn In foreign ex
change rates which occurred. However,
this was a result of the demand for remit
tance against the engagement and was not
clear. The scarcity of currency sharpens
tne demand for exchange. The easing or
tho local call money market was given pan
responsibility for tne movement. The con
ditions became torpid at times and tne
market seemed to be settling into an atti
tude of cautious waiting to study develop
ments . In the general situation. The easy
closing was attributed to some late selling
out or collateral loans.
tonds were irregular. Total sates, par
vtuue, .Diu.wii. united states zs advanced

JONES SPEAKS AT KELSO
CONGRESSMAN PROMISES AID
TO OPEN COWLITZ RIVER.
Commercial Club Presents Statistics
Showing Tonnage Originating
in and Near Kelso.
KELSO, Wash., Nov. 1. (Special.)
Congressman Jones, of North Yakima,
was entertained tonight at a banquet by
the Commercial Club of this city. Mr.
Jones addressed the business men and
assured them that he would do all in
his power to secure an appropriation for
deepening the- channel of the Cowlitz
River.
The plan for securing a deeper channel
in the Cowlitz will Include the use of
wing dams or Jetty work, and It Is ex
pected that the straightening of the chan
nel in this manner will remove the bars
and permit lumber carriers of light draft
to enter at all seasons of the year.
Mr. Jones was presented with a mass
of statistics showing Jhe vast amount of
tonnage which passes down and out ,of
tne tjowiuz uver irom iveisor and vicin
ity, and the amount which is brought
to this city by rail because no boats can
operate on the Cowlitz above this city.
The total tonnage In lumber, shingles.
piling and railroad ties shipped down the
Cowlitz last year amounted to 179,835
tons; farm' products, stock, fruits, etc.,
amounted to 7326 tons; fish, 700 tons: In
coming frlelght, 12,000 tons.
Above Kelso there originated '41.920 tons
of lumber, shingles and other mill pro
ducts; 12,410 tons of farm products, with
7600 tons of incoming freight. It is es
timated that the greater share of this
tonnage would go by boat were the river
navigable.
Aside from the above mentioned ton
nage, Kelso and vicinity have two oper
ating coal mines. The Consumers' Coal
Company has sufficient coal blocked out
to warrant the assertion that it will shin
not less than 150 tons to Portland daily
on Darges as soon as a tramway Is built
across the Northern Pacific tracks. The
company claims that with proper water
facilities it can Increase this tonnaere to
several huDdred tons a day.
fateamers plying on the Cowlitz and
making headquarters at Kelso or in the
vicinity are the Kellogg, "Weown, Ches
ter, Calwell and Mystic. These all make
the Cowlitz their headauarters. although
registered at Portland. The Gameback
and the Dixon and several other steamers
mane irequent trips Into the river, hut
do not make heaquarters here.
There are six lines of lotreinir rallrnario
making their terminus on the PnwHt
Elver within eight miles of Kelso, with
a total mileage of 80.
During the past year six km hnnr..
have been built here.
There are six pile-drivers owned nnfl
operated at and near Kalso, on the Cow
litz River.
CAUGHT ON BRIDGE BY TRAIN
Mother and Two. Children Forced to
Jump From Trestle.
VANCOUVER, "Wash.. Nov. 1. (Sne-
dal.) Mrs. Sigler, of Yacolt, Wash., and
her two children, narrowly escaned vio
lent death last night, while crossing a
nign rauroaa trestle near Yacolt. The
evening passenger train overtook them
and all three were either knocked from
tne track or Jumped to avoid being hit.
Mrs. Sigler fell about 25 feet and was
severely cut and bruised. She is In a
semi-conscious condition today and is un
able to give a definite account of the ac
cident. The younger child escaped with
out injury, having lodged on some of the
cross timbers of the trestle. The toov held
on to the timbers supporting the track and
also escaped without injury, although a
portion of his coat was torn off by the
projecting portions of the cars.
After the train had passed, the boy
climbed down. Finding his mother un
conscious, he hurried to a farmhouse for
help. The girl was rescued from her
perilous position on the lofty timbers and
(both mother and child were taken to a
neighboring House and medical aid summoned.

No class of human ailments is so

peculiar to men. As a result the
methods commonly employed In
treating them are but relies of

ineffective and unscientific. I
have replaced them with origlnaf

that have proven supremely ef
