Mikkelsen's Party Traveled 500
Miles Over Ice Will Continue
Operations xt Year.
NEW YORK. Sept 12. The command
rrs of the Anglo-American polar expedi
tion, which lost its ship, the Duchess of
Bedford, in an attempt to find a new
continent north of Alaska, reported to
the American Geographical Society today
that the soundings disclosed no such
land. This dispatch came from Mlker M.
Mikkelson and Ernest Leflngwell, the
Joint commanders of the expedition, and
was dated at Dawson, Alaska, September
10.
The explorers reported that their
sledge trip north of Alaska covered 500
miles of sea Ice and that they crossed
the edge of the continental shelf twice.
Their soundings, taken 50 miles off the
Alaskan coast and beyond, were made
to a depth of 2060 feet, but found no bot
tom. Next year, they reported, they will
continue the exploration of the Beaufort
sea, surveying the coast and making
ethnological studies.
