nounces Structure to Be Six
or Seven Stories High.
WILL OCCUPY HALF BLOCK
Location to Be on East Side Build

Will Be $100,000.
Further evidence of the rapid growth
of the Implement Jobbing business in
Portland is shown by the decision of the
John Deere Plow Company to erect one
of the finest and largest warehouses In
the city. The building will cover a full
half-block and will be either six or seven
stories in height. Its cost will be at least
J100.000, and construction will probably
begin within the next few weeks, the
time depending somewhat on the cnar
acter of foundation that will be found
necessary.
The present two-story frame building
occupied by the John Deere Plow Com
pany will be torn down and the site used
far the new structure. The half-block
fronts on East Tamhill street, between
East First and East Second. It Is In
the warehouse district of the East Side
and will be one of the finest structures
erected in that part of the city.
The builders now have a contractor at
work to ascertain how deep It -will be
necessary to go to get a solid foundation.
Local architects have been engaged to get
out the specifications, and upon prelim
inary investigation think that a substan
tial foundation can be found six or eight
feet below the surface of the ground. If
this proves correct, construction will be
tinder way within a few weeks. If it is
found necessary to lay a deep concrete
foundation there will be some delay and
10,000 will be added to the cost of the
structure.
The John Deere Plow Company has Its
headquarters in Moline, 111., and has
maintained a Pacific Coast agency at
Portland for the past six years. Robert
Darrow is the Portland manager.
"When we built the present frame
building, five years ago, we thought that
It would meet every demand of the busi
ness for a long time to come. We had
no idea that the jobbing business in
Portland would increase so rapidly. "We
are badly cramped in our present quar
ters and bur new building will at least
treble our floor space."
Many other Jobbing firms in Portland
have found their business increasing so
rapidly that new warehouses were neces
sary long before they were expected.
Among these Is Mitchell, Lewis & Staver,
a firm that is Just completing a . four
story brick warehouse covering a naif
block at Bast Second and East Morrison
streets. The Marshall-Wells Hardware
Company is another firm In somewhat the
Fame line that recently purchased two
blocks in North Portland to provide for
the increase In their business. In the
Implement business Portland's jobbing
trade is said to exceed that of any other
cities on the Pacific Coast and is ex
panding with the development of the
country.
The United States National Bank has
sold to Sanderson Reed and C. A. Bell
the southwest corner of East Twenty
sixth street and Holladay avenue, and to
George Rasmussen a lot, on East Twenty
sixth street, between Pacific and Ore
eon, and a lot on East Twenty-fifth
street, between Pacific and Oregon. The
three sales were made by Mall & Von
Borstel.

ably an advertisement, on the front page
of a Portland paper on Monday, which I
desire to call your attention to. and which
it seems to me comes under the law regulat
ing the transmission of obscene literature.
I inclose the clipping and I am sure you
will agree with me that it is a little worse
than anything which you have known of in
all your experience.
I desire to call the attention of the moth
ers of Portland to the dangers that beset
their children through these so-called social
clubs, many of them organized by presum
ably decent peoplfc.

ment could find a place on the first or any
other page of a paper that decent people
are expeciea to reaa, ana in behalf of the
Woman's Christian Temperance Union,
which was largely the means of securing
ine laws against tne transmission of Im
moral and obscene literature through the

Council, and during the life of this
franchise, it will pay the city nearly
$20,000 in annual installments, begin
ning at $250 and reaching $550 toward
the end of the franchise. Mr. Davi
dor, representing; the new gas com
pany, Is looking for a site for the new
plant, and says he will be prepared
to start the work of construction the
day following the passage and ap
proval of the ordinance. Members of
the Council say they favor the ordi
nance, and It will probably be passed
without opposition.

Drunken Man Starts Shooting.
OREGON CITY, Aug. 29. (Special.)
Billy Riches, a bootblack, created con
siderable excitement at midnight last
night by firing a revolver In a room in
the rear of Stewart's saloon. The boot
black was intoxicated and was in the
company of Julia Davis and May Whit
ney, two Portland women. Officers
Cooke and Shaw heard the report of the
weapon and arrested all three of the oc
cupants of the room and locked them up
until this afternoon, when Riches was
fined $20 and the women ordered out of
town.

The pressure has risen somewhat along the
coast, but has fallen decidedly east of the
mountains, and this evening a well-defined
disturbance overlies Eastern Washington.
